Bubblegum Social Club Ep. 19! Let’s talk about Captain America The First Avengers (CATFA)!

It’s the show where I make my friends watch things I like and then talk about it! And for this episode I made Samantha watch CATFA because she’s saw Cap 2: The Winter Soldier before seeing the first one and clearly this had to be fixed.

We discuss how different it can be watching a superhero movie now versus watching it when they first started coming out, especially when there were way fewer superhero/comic book movies. I address the fact that there are many people who see this movie as a failure or hate it for various reasons, and how it deviates from the movies that surround it. Maybe this is why we like it so much? We discuss the amazing special effects (and I get the details of how they created skinny!Steve wrong, but I was close! It was much more computers making him tiny than using the body double, but the body double was also used). Samantha provides some historical context in which the movie takes place and when the first Captain America comic book came out and we discuss her theory about the after credits “scene.”

We also discuss the characterization of Steve Rogers in the movie, including that moment when the giant body of via the serum converged with the personality and sense of personal autonomy of Steve Rogers to create Captain America. Does the movie really depict him as heroic and selfless? Is he just trying to prove himself? Is compassion the key to Captain America, at least in this movie? More importantly, why is nobody talking about Steve Rogers’ Mulan moment and why does nobody notice how sneaky and what a cheater he is?

And we have even more questions! Is Agent Carter the best character in this movie? Yes. Yes she is. Are YOU worthy of the serum? Did Steve Rogers have ANY idea what was going to happen when agreed to some mysterious medical procedure? What’s the deal with Bucky Barnes?

And I ask Samantha that most important question when it comes to this movie, did the ending make sense?

3 minute conversation challenge! Broadway vs Movie Musicals!

Once again Samantha and I challenge ourselves to have a 3 minute conversation, based on a topic picked out of a hat, so that I may learn how to be more concise.

This time around we discuss a favorite topic, musicals! What happens when we compare the live shows and the made for movie screen musicals? We discover it’s another topic Samantha feels passionately about. And so we discuss how they are different art forms, where the filmed Broadway show is on the spectrum, movies that have gone from movie to Broadway musical to movie musical (Hairspray), and how well Chicago incorporates all of the elements. Which one is our favorite? ALL OF THEM!

“We only have three minutes, this is the most important topic” -- I may also feel strongly about the topic.

Bubblegum Social Club Ep. 16! Let’s talk about Supernatural: Changing Channels!

The show where we watch things and talk about them! Ravina and I revisit Supernatural to discuss the trickster yet again after watching Episode 8 of Season 5, Changing Channels.

NOTE:

We had sound problems towards the end of the video!! Sorry about that! Since it’s live we couldn’t do anything about it and it was hard to tell how bad it was. Luckily it’s not til basically the end of the video! About 30 minutes in there are a few glitches, but it all goes haywire at about 33 minutes. See below for a summary of our final conclusions.

As we run through the episode and our reactions, Ravina and I discuss how my preference still skews to campy fun Supernatural episodes, the delight of sudden changes of tone, different eras of television, distinct Hulk hallucinations, the confidence the Winchesters have in their ability to kill supernatural beings, adorably flustered Dean and Dr. Sexy, Supernatural tumblr gif disbelief, Supernatural controversies, the fan casting of Jensen Ackles as Hawkeye*, the undercurrent of angst I did have feels for, brief opinions on destiny, CSI: Miami burns, the disturbing hilarity of Sam as a car, and how stupid it is to force other people to fight your battles just because you don’t want face your family.

Additionally we get genuinely frustrated questions about the practical elements of the show like: how do they have credit cards, can pose as FBI agents, go to hospitals, and pay for things.

Summary of what you missed due to the sound delay:

We talk about how the Angels are all brothers, and how we don't know if that’s new or not, and how the brothers ultimately choose to decide their own destiny and not partake in a stupid fight between these “higher” beings, which, is indeed, stupid. We go on to discuss the fact that I much more enjoy the episodes that tell their story differently and how with their being so many seasons you do get a variety of types of episodes, from all drama to all the time to full slapstick comedy. And finally, I admit not being as into it as I could be, despite liking the show. I’m not dismissing the show, but at this point it’s hard to be invested in a show with so many seasons when there are so many other shows I want to see more, like Daredevil and all the new upcoming superhero shows, especially when this show can be a bit too scary for me. Ravina explains how she likes the rush of adrenaline she can get from the show. Ultimately we both had a lot of fun doing these episodes and I loved a look at this different side of Supernatural. And then I apologize profusely for the sound problems!

3 minute challenge! Superpowers!!

We challenged ourselves to have a 3 minute conversation about a topic picked out of a hat. And promptly discover Sofia and Ravina have quite differing thoughts on the subject. Sofia has favorites that seem to be more about impulses, Ravina leans towards the practical and helpful, and the ones we do prefer reflect the dynamics of our friendship! And I rant about people on trains. Oops.

Bubblegum Social Club Ep. 16! Let’s talk about Shrek the Musical!

It’s USUALLY the show where I make my friends watch things I like and then talk about it. But this time Samantha suggested we watch Shrek the Musical on Netflix! And it made us feel MANY emotions.

Samantha and I talk through the story of the show vs the story of the movie, and get sidetracked by all the weird, fun, dark crazyness that is this musical. From the dark tragic beginning of child abandonment, to highlighting characters that were not main characters in the movie, we go on to discuss when actors you love play characters you can’t stand, puppets, the beautiful comedic timing of Christopher Sieber and Sutton Foster, DRAGONS, how so WEIRD the show ultimately is, in a good way, DRAGONS, fangirl a lot over Sutton Foster, and how this show made us Feel Deeply.
