literally wtf is this person even claiming.
shoutout to buriemusic for sharing this
That video says that the band rejected doing something for Shrek the Third after scrapping the cabin album.
... but Shrek the Third + its soundtrack were both released in mid-May 2007. π©
So P!ATD was actually still working on the cabin album when Shrek 3 was released (they'd just moved from the cabin to the studio in the LA area to record demos and keep writing). During the second week of May, MTV News shared that Panic had written 8 songs for their untitled second album so far and were slated to begin tracking on June 1st. Then fans were updated by Adam on May 29th that the band was finishing up writing and would begin recording in a few weeks. Then the cabin album had been officially scrapped by early July... long after Shrek the Third hit theaters. Obviously they weren't approached at that point.
I don't remember hearing about the band being approached to do something for Shrek, so I can't say anything more on that topic. But in order to have a song ready for a May release, wouldnβt they need to have been approached a couple months earlier? Like before they even went to the cabin in March.
why is the scrapped cabin album even being mentioned in this video and why are pictures from the Pretty. Odd. era being shown, I am so confused
UPDATE:
This matters because journalists & media have been carelessly throwing random timelines out there from the beginning that have had a snowball effect that really messes up Panic's history and everyone's understanding of when things happened. For example, P!ATDβs Kerrang cover article that was definitely written in July 2006 saidΒ βten months ago, no one had heard of Panic! at the Disco. They had no deal, theyβd never played live, and they were on the verge of losing their singer to a career in hairdressing.βΒ The actual situation ten months before this article was written: the band was finishing up their first national tour, theyβd been officially signed for over half a year, and AFYCSO was being released. But Kerrang was viewed as a decently legit publication that would be cited. I could literally trace how misinformation slowly spread from one published article to another until the band's history became a mess in certain areas and it was so frustrating because those were viewed as sources.
So apparently it sounds like Jon might have recently said something about the band turning down Shrek the Third? I'm curious what his phrasing was. Because if Jon was the one who threw it into the wrong season, that is completely understandable nbd. The band members went through SO much in such a short period of time that I thought it looked like an impossible feat for someone inside that whirlwind to keep everything straight if they were busy living it. For example, sometimes Brendon reached for a number that revealed how he felt about a situation. That made sense.
However, I'm curious if Jon even said that in the first place. Or did he say something more along the lines that the band was busy dealing with their internal struggles while they figured out the cabin album, etc. Because they did start working on ideas for that album in late 2006 on tour. They were still getting ready for the cabin in January & February 2007 and talked about working on like sounds and a storyline during their time "off." So if they rejected Shrek because they were working on the cabin album that spring or something, that makes sense.
But if the guy in the video just ran with his own assumptions... that is not ok. That is how you get messed up timelines that do have an impact and begin to slowly alter everything else in order to make that error work (ex: people would conclude that the cabin album got scrapped well before May 2007... so everything else gets bumped around and then that shit gets cited as fact). The only way that the misinformation in the video above is excusable is if Jon literally said that the band had already scrapped the cabin album when they were approached for Shrek the Third. But even then... that video didn't say that the misinformation came from Jon, so it's still on them. In that case, they heard something and just ran with it as fact without doing any basic research.
Also, βthe creative process of Cricket & Cloverβ is much different than what was stated like fact with no source in the video above.
thinking about how panic at the disco was the outlier of bands. got signed immediately. recorded an album in 5 weeks with 14 hour days. had almost instantaneous success. went home. had to learn how to perform live. immediately began touring in 2005. performed 193 times just in 2006. got really into substances. wrote half a new album and scrapped it. wrote a second album. went on multiple tours. split up. everyone was fucked up. and all of this happened when they were under the age of 23.
wow right
from Highfield in Germany:
Brendon's hand is on top of Jon's in the next picture (he's ducked down behind them):
that picture still makes me smile because there were SO many comments & threads on various fan forums in 2006 analyzing the fingers... and it turned out that some of us could recognize Brendon's fingers at a glance aaaand did not realize we had that ability lol. (Some people were debating whether the shadow on the wall behind them was Brendon't butt but idc, the fingers were enough to tell me who was there).
here's part of the interview:
and some dead old uploads of this interview, including the first part that's been cut off: one, two, three
Thank god I wasnβt there bru I would have passed out this fine shyt
