* 𝙳𝚁. 𝙼𝙾𝚁𝚁𝙸𝚂𝙾𝙽.

the  heaviness  of  his  words  isn’t  lost  on  her,   nor  is  she  looking  away  from  the  glimpse  inside  himself  that  he’s  offered  her.     her  brow  furrows,   just  for  a  second,   as  she  lets  her  gaze  fall  on  him.     she  can  hear  the  complexities  in  what  he’d  said   ---------   as  if  he  considered  his  absence  of  faith  to  be  a  burden,   or  his  inability  to  find  it  a  failure.     religiosity  was  a  way  of  life  a  lot  of  people  struggled  with,   or  it  was  something  a  lot  of  people  couldn’t  care  less  about.     milly  fell  on  the  latter  end  of  the  spectrum,   though  she  could  empathize  with  the  other,   much  more  troubled  end.

❝     there’s  nothing  wrong  with  not  having  faith  .  .  .     ❞          milly  says  to  him,   gently.     religion  was  always  a  delicate  topic,   but  it  seemed  it  might  have  been  especially  delicate  for  him.

❝     oh,   sure.     ❞          milly  replies  to  the  hunter,   laughing  and  turning  forward,   away  from  him.     the  movement  is  partially  to  reach  her  drink  on  the  bar,   but  mostly  as  a  reaction  against  the  heat  she  felt  in  her  cheeks.

it’s  a  nice  thing  to  hear,   coming  from  him.     the  loyalty  of  dean  winchester  was  something  most  hunters  dreamed  of   ---------   having  him  in  your  corner  was  like  knowing  you  had  a  titan  on  your  side.     she’d  moved  past  that  dream  a  long  time  ago,   though.     or,   at  least,   that  version  of  it  had  shifted  into  something  realer.     she  didn’t  want  him  in  her  life  as  a  titan,   and  she  stopped  looking  at  him  as  simply  the  man  who’d  saved  the  world  a  long  time  ago.     now,   she’d  seen  him  spill  his  drinks  too  many  times  and  laugh  at  too  many  awful  jokes,   many  of  them  hers,   to  only  be  seen  in  her  mind  as  his  great  brutish  reputation.

she  chalked  his  comment  up  to  a  drunken  stream  of  words  and  crossed  wires  in  his  routine - ready mind.     there  wasn’t  another  available  woman  in  the  place,   and  that  meant  his  time  was  being  spent  with  her.     the  comment  must  have  slipped,   or  it  didn’t  imply  what  she  thought  it  did,   or  she  was  just  thinking  into  it  too  much.     though,   he  had  driven  thirteen  hours  just  to  help  her  on  a  nasty  poltergeist  case  when  she  only  slightly  mentioned  it  was  a  tough  one.     now,   here  they  were.     grabbing  her  drink  and  gulping  it  down  in  a  quick  swig,   she  lets  herself  wince  at  the  burn  for  a  moment  and  then  turns  back  to  him.

she  whips  her  head  around  at  the  man,   wondering  why  he  thought  she  was  going  to  let  his  statement  slide,   and  why  he  even  had  the  audacity  to  say  it  in  front  of  her  at  all.     a  wooden  spoon  is  picked  up  and  pointed  at  him,   half - joking  and  half  serious.          ❝     hey !     ❞

milly  wouldn’t  hesitate  to  admit  that  it  took  a  while  to  warm  up  to  dani,   but  she’d  also  be  just  as  quick  to  admit  her  reasoning  was  misguided.     her  brother  didn’t  have  the  best  track  record  with  relationships,   and  the  fiery  bartender  had  seemed  to  fit  the  general  profile.     it  took  a  bit  for  milly  to  realize  she  was  wrong,   sure,   but  now,   dani  was  as  close  to  her  heart  as  a  sister  would  be.          ❝     i  think  a  lot  of  people  struggle  with  that,   hon.     it’s  a  sort  of  survival  instinct,   really.      i  mean,   look  at  me   ---------   i  had  a  baby  all  on  my  own  instead  of  gambling  on  letting  a  man  in  my  life  because  i  didn’t  want  the  risk.     ❞

vermilion  looks  to  the  detective,   only  to  soon  look  away  again,   almost  in  shame.     she’s  still  not  adjusted  to  the  bare  vulnerability  that  came  with  allowing  him  to  know  her.     and,   at  the  core  of  it,   that’s  what  it  was   ---------   she  allowed  him  to  know  she  was  scared.     he  had  to  have  known  that,   to  some  degree,   that  the  only  reason  he  knew  anything  about  her  was  because  she’d  offered  it  to  him.     even  so,   he  was  the  only  person  she’d  ever  offered  something  as  sacred  as  herself  to.          ❝     i  know  you  do.     ❞          she  mumbles,   lightheartedly.          ❝     i’m  still  getting  used  to  that.     ❞

in  the  weeks  that  she’d  known  him,   it  hadn’t  seemed  like  abel  was  the  kind  of  person  to  openly  lean  on  others.     he  was  collected,   and  seemingly  self - sufficient,   and  it  looked  like  everyone  assumed  that  he  was  fine  with  being  on  his  own.     but,   if  there  was  anything  milly  was  defined  by,   it  was  her  intuition.     she  knew  that  investigating,   especially  investigating  murder,   was  a  cold  career  to  have.     it  was  weathering,   and  abrasive.     it  only  made  sense  to  shut  yourself  off  and  board  up  any  vulnerability  you  had  to  cope  and  survive.     milly  understood  that,   but  she  also  very  vividly  disagreed  with  it.     in  having  that  duality  in  herself,   it  wasn’t  very  difficult  to  see  him,   especially  once  he  started  to  open  himself  up  to  her.     it  didn’t  take  long  for  that  to  happen,   but  she  wasn’t  exactly  sure  when  it  began.     she  assumed  it  started  once  she  opened  up  to  him,   or  maybe  it  started  when  it  became  clear  that  she  wasn’t  going  to  let  the  cold  nature  of  the  case  tarnish  who  she  was.     she  was  comfortable  enough  in  her  own  self - sufficiency  to  know  that  leaning  on  others  was  not  a  failure.     she  was  going  to  be  warm,   no  matter  the  horrors  she  faced.     this  made  it  easy  for  people  to  be  drawn  to  her,   and  to  feel  safe  with  her.

still,   whatever  had  drawn  them  to  each  other  was  couldn’t  be  explained  so  casually.     had  it  been  casual,   it  wouldn’t  have  led  to  where  they  are  now.     subtle,   professional  assurances  of  support  had  become  tender  embraces  behind  a  closed  door  to  show  him  that  she  was  something  sturdy  to  depend  on.     that  turned  into  desperate  kisses  when  emotions  where  high,   which  turned  into  locking  that  same  door  to  not  risk  getting  caught  in  the  middle  of  a  massive  HR  issue,   to  eventually  deciding  that  keeping  whatever  they  had  going  contained  to  the  state  police  department  was  only  hindering  its  potential.     now,   it  was  rare  that  she  didn’t  spend  a  few  hours  in  his  home  on  the  nights  she  was  in  dallas.

they  would  cook,   and  they  would  eat,   and  maybe  they  would  end  up  in  the  middle  of  that  massive  HR  issue  again,   but  whatever  happened,   they  would  always  talk.     some  nights,   it  was  light  and  easy,   and  the  conversations  they  had  stayed  far  away  from  nightmares  and  traumas.     other  nights,   like  tonight,   their  talks  were  heavy  and  their  mutual  exhaustion  felt  like  their  own  personal  threats,   and  the  presence  of  the  other  person  was  the  only  thing  that  felt  like  a  defense  against  it.     they  sat  on  his  couch,   milly  tucked  under  his  arm  while  she  aimlessly  ran  her  thumb  over  his  hand.     she  had  known  dozens  of  detectives  in  her  lifetime,   the  majority  of  them  cold,   like  their  career.     abel  had  never  been  that.     she  listened  to  him  talk  about  lonely  memories  in  a  low  voice  that  suggested  he’d  never  told  them  to  anyone  before.     but,   what  he  said  was  clear  and  organized.     it  seemed  like  he  had  been  wanting  to  tell  it  to  someone  for  a  while.     she  was  lucky  enough  to  be  the  person  he  trusted  with  it,   and  she  cherished  that  fact.     every  few  minutes,   she  would  look  up  to  him  and  press  her  lips  to  the  side  of  his  jaw  and  put  her  face  into  his  neck  for  a  moment  to  two,   just  to  show  him  she  was  there,   actively  listening  and  actively  caring.

the  dredging  up  of  awful  memories  had  undoubtedly  put  him  in  a  place  he  didn’t  want  to  deal  with  on  his  own,   and  when  she  hears  him  utter     “  i  don’t  want  to  be  alone.  ”     she  wants  to  do  nothing  more  than  assure  him  he  wasn’t.

❝     i  don’t  have  to  leave,   if  you  don’t  want  me  to  .  .  .     ❞          milly  tells  him,   delicately.     she  knew  offering  to  stay  the  night  wasn’t  a  small  thing,   but  she  also  knew  it  was  something  that  seemed  right.
