CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY (tw: miscarriage)
When she was younger, Cassandra Lockridge had no idea she would hold the weight of the world upon her shoulders. Before she turned ten, her biggest worries included hiding the mud off her silk dresses and making sure the cooks never saw her steal more than her fair share of honey cakes from the kitchen. To pass the time, she often ran through the gardens plucking wildflowers and finding a book to lose herself in. Yet, she noticed the melancholy that seemed to be her motherâs entire being, like a dark cloud waiting to storm as her father brushed off the worries of others.
Cassandra was too curious for her own good. While her friends were off with childish matters, she observed the sorrow that had filled her mother. Every year, it seemed, her mother wept over linen that was meant for a little one that never came. No matter how hard her mother tried and prayed, a child never came until she became completely despondent. Despite her fatherâs insistence to continue to keep trying, her mother only withdrew from court and to avoid any questions or concerns, swept Cassandra and her mother away from Mayfair towards the seaside town of Margate.
Suddenly, there was nothing that was distracting enough to make Cassandra forget about her mother and the distance between them, nothing to stop her from seeing the way her father brushed her off to tend to her sick mother. Cassandra needed to keep herself busy. How many of her friends had their brothers and sisters to keep them company? To confide their secrets to? Cassandra had only herself and Margate only exaggerated those feelings of loneliness.
She did everything she could to forget about her parents and it led her to be unruly and disobedient according to her governess. However, none of it mattered when her parents were completely oblivious to their daughter. Cassandra eventually found ways to preoccupy herself and focused her time to being studious. She managed to form her own opinions, to argue and challenge anyone she could. Eventually, it tricked her mind into believing everything was fine and nothing in her family was amiss. Her father would be preoccupied with her mother and she would never be badgered into finding a husband.
As her father searched for something that could bring her mother back to him, he was losing his patience and will to continue further until he realized that it may just have been Cassandra that held the key to all of it. Maybe, if Cassandra could marry, give Portia a grandchild then it would have all been for something. So it was time for her to head back to London and join the marriage market. It didnât matter how much she pleaded with her father and begged to not go, Cassandra eventually stepped onto a carriage with her belongings headed to London to become the Marquis Sinclairâs ward.
Cassandra still plans to sabotage any man who dares declare his love for her in hopes that she will be discarded for the season, giving her more time to fulfill the aspirations she had always desired.
