One thing which is really interesting to me regarding the dynamic between Percy and Mars/ Ares, is that every single time Mars describes the kind of person he respects, or the attributes he appreciates in mortals, he just describes Percy to a T without realizing it.

He says he values bravery, loyalty, brains and a sense of duty, and then has beef with a character who has

shown absolutely incredible acts of bravery (fighting the minotaur, visiting the underworld, fighting atlas, fighting Kampe, the entirety of the battle of Manhatten, falling into Tartarus, etc.)

whose loyalty is one of his most defining features

who has been shown to be incredibly intelligent and strategic (defeating Procrustes, defeating the Nemean lion, tricking Nereus, again Manhattan, etc.)

and who has on many instances been willing to sacrifice either his own life or even risk the lives of the people close to him for the sake of the greater good (leaving his mom behind in the underworld, asking about the whereabouts of the monster Artemis was hunting instead of Annabeth's, fighting in Manhattan, despite believing the prophecy meant that he would die, etc.)

Listen, I have some issues with the short story "Staff of Hermes", but the way Rick Riordan wrote the relationship between Percy and Hermes is absolutely hilarious and I love every second of it.

Percy describing Hermes as "Personal friend, dispenser of heroic quests, and frequent cause of migraine headaches" is absolutely peak.

The fact that Percy was able to literally grab Hermes's arm, physically pull him away from a confrontation with Annabeth, and then interrupt him twice, while he was telling him how he lost his staff, all the while Hermes was already in a really bad mood, with Hermes' only reaction being mild annoyance, and not even a hint of the anger, which would be the expected reaction from a god, is amazing.

And Hermes then telling Percy at the end, "I might not see you for a while" as if they see each other frequently and talk every other week, when they only had like five conversations total over the course of three years is so funny to me.

Percy and Hermes have honestly such a peak dynamic.

You see, I always fall into the rabbit hole of European history. For some reason, I’m fascinated by their culture—how they dress, how they live—and what better way than to include my favorite renaissance version of Cinderella?

Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott’s chemistry in this movie is arguably through the roof. Their acting, although quite lacking in their accents, is faithful to 17th-century France. Also, Da Vinci’s connections to the story added an “oomph” factor by the way his painting started the movie.

Why I love this version:

There’s no magic involved! No pumpkin. No mice. Just the circumstances of Danielle de Barbarac as a maid to her stepmother and her stepsisters.

Speaking of stepmothers, it’s Anjelica Houston!

You can never get tired of watching because you will notice new things every time. (For example, me realizing that Utopia was written by Sir Thomas More, who I always see in the documentaries I’ve watched on the said rabbit hole.)
