My main interests currently are:
Percy Jackson
Greek mythology
A Song of Ice and Fire
MCU
DC comics
Star Wars
One Piece
generally the book community.
But my main focus on this blog is Percy Jackson. Specifically, the character of Percy. He is my absolute favourite riordanverse character, and that becomes very obvious when you visit my blog. I am very much fixated on him.
Some of my main opinions and focuses, just so you know what this blog is all about
I am a “Percy and Nico are brothers” truther. They are my favourite relationship in the entirety of the riordanverse. I love both of them dearly.
One of my main topics of interest is Percy’s relationship to the gods and the mythological world in general
Percy’s kindness, empathy and intelligence are some of his defining features and some of the main reasons why I love him so much
I’m a multishipper, but not the biggest fan of romance in PJO. My focus lies almost exclusively on platonic relationships
I am also critical of Rick Riordan, Heroes of Olympus, the college trilogy, the nico duology and the live action tv show. I’m not a hater, but if you don’t want to engage with criticism of any kind, this blog is probably not for you.
I am also a “Percy of color” truther

It's extremely normal and common to have favourite tropes in fiction, but whatever I've got is something else entirely, and lowkey starts to border on obsession.
There's this very specific, I think more niche, trope of a heroic, morally good protagonist having a morally grey, villainous or even straight up evil parental figure, older sibling figure or mentor, who are on the opposite end of a conflict, but who still deeply care about the protagonist and desperately try to bring them to their side (even with amoral means) which has me in a complete and utter chokehold.
Especially if you sprinkle in a bit of protectiveness, overprotectiveness or even platonic possessiveness.
That is probably my main guilty pleasure when it comes to media consumption. It has been my main guilty pleasure for over 8 years and will probably remain so for the rest of my life.
I genuinly couldn't care less if its in a book, a movie, a tv show, a comic, an anime, a manga, a manwha, a video game, a theatre performance, a musical, a fanfiction, etc. I'll consume whatever media has this dynamic.
Like, even if I'm not part of a particular fandom, once I find out this trope is popular within the community and has a couple of fanfictions, I'll consume the entire canon source material, and then read every single fanwork that fits this dynamic, even if the canon storyline is not something I am normally into.
Which actually also makes me a real hypocrite.
Normally I am very much against the tropification of media and hate when especially books are advertised only by the tropes embedded within them (because tropes tell you absolutely nothing about the plot, characters, theme, etc. of the story) but if I'd see a book get advertised as having this specific dynamic, I'll buy it no questions asked.
No matter the genre, no matter the plot, no matter the theme, no matter the writing quality.
I genuinly have a problem.
(And yes, this post is a desperate cry for help. If anyone who reads this post has recommendations with this specific trope in any form of fictional media, be it movie, tv show, book, game, fanfiction, etc. I am begging you to name them.)
This is a very long rant, essentially just to talk about this scene 🤓👇 Enjoy the ride, padawan
Point 1 - Chiron sucks, who cares
Look, I’m not calling Chiron incompetent.
I am, however, going to be pointing out that archery is the one class we know for sure Chiron is teaching Percy at camp, and he has failed at improving his abilities with a bow and an arrow in any way, shape, or form, as far as we know.
There, that’s a pretty neutral statement. No character bashing in this post.
It’s also important to notice that while Percy is really, REALLY bad at it, there's no canon indication of him having been cursed to never be able to learn archery, nor has any character (including Poseidon and Apollo, who might know more about that) ever stated that Poseidon’s kids are predisposed to be bad at it. If it’s not stated or hinted at in the narrative, then these explanations aren't valid, and considering both Apollo and Artemis really like him, it’s pretty safe to say that Percy being bad at archery is a matter of skill, which can be improved through practice, even if he never becomes a "great" or "really good" archer. Being able to make at least one good shot at a reasonable distance, though, could be life-saving for him, as proven by his fight against Geryon in The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Chiron just might not be the best teacher for his specific needs. Which is also the conclusion Apollo gets to! So great that he agrees with me <3
Point 2 - Apollo: "I can teach him better than you can"
Trying really hard not to start this by making a reference to "It's rotten work"/"Not to me, not if it's you".... aaaand failing.
But this isn't really the point I wanna make.
I couldn't talk about Apollo's offer to teach Percy archery without acknowledging that he does have an ego the size of Olympus and there is an element of arrogance to him saying that he'll succeed where others have failed.
But he's right!!
Is it really arrogance if you are literally the god of archery??? I don't think so. I think he's being realistic. Apollo is probably a great archery teacher (or even a great teacher in general) and could definitely do a better job than Chiron. That's just a fact, not even something he has to bother proving. And I'll stand by that until the day I die!
Next!
Point 3 - You gotta put in the work like everyone else, man
Now we get to the point I wanted to make.
I have been in fandom long enough to remember how popular it was in fanfics back then to have either Apollo or Artemis give Percy a blessing that would make him magically good at archery.
Now, I’m not pointing fingers and criticizing anyone; it’s fanfic, c’mon, if you want to make your favorite character magically good at something, or at least make him naturally talented (or even normal!) instead of naturally bad at it, I’m not judging.
But I like the way things played out in canon. Nowadays, especially after the rise of AI, I look really fondly at Apollo’s offer to teach Percy archery in the old-fashioned way instead of snapping his fingers and just making him good at it.
Apollo is the god of archery (amongst many other things); and you know how hard it is to learn it and become good at it?
I don’t, to be honest; I’m not an archer, I’ve never learned it. But I know it takes strength; you gotta have some really strong upper body muscles and core stability, which will be built through practice; and I know your posture will have to change to improve your shooting, and that you’re gonna have to develop and train your hand-eye coordination, not to mention the stuff you’ll have to learn about the bows, which can come in different shapes and be made of different materials, and about the tragectory of the arrows, and how different factors can change it. What happens with your shot if it’s not a clear day? How can the rain change the trajectory? And the wind? And the gravity? What if you’re shooting while riding a horse? Or running?
Learning archery, much like anything, takes a lot of practice and dedication. That’s no different for Apollo’s kids, btw; sure, some of them may be naturally gifted, but being talented doesn’t mean you can skip practice and still be a great archer. Apollo’s kids have to work to become good at it, just like everyone else. And it’s tough work, even if you like it. But I think they take after their father in their passion for learning and love for his subjects, which makes the experience worthwhile.
Now, can you see why it would be disrespectful for the god of archery to just make Percy good at it in a snap of fingers, without having to really work for it? What that would mean for the thousands of people (including his kids) who show up to practice every day to slowly build muscle, form, and knowledge of the skill?
And I have to say, making so the blessing just gives him "talent" or something, without erasing the necessity of training, doesn’t really appeal to me either. Why the fear of taking the long road? The unpaved road with thorny bushes, full of mud and rocks, the one that looks like a good place to get murdered by a stray arrow?
Apollo isn’t afraid of taking it. It’s tough work. Even to him, and especially if it’s Percy. But he’s volunteering to do it! And with that attitude, he could succeed!
Apollo offering to help Percy practice archery is a character-defining moment to me; it shows that he values dedication and genuinely believes anyone can learn. Most importantly, it shows that he cares about the process and not just the results. Which brings me to my next (and last!) point.
Point 4 - The first step to being good at something is sucking ass at it. Yes, even for Apollo.
That's it, I'll say it. I like that he makes bad haikus. Don't judge me! I think at this point you must realize why.
I know not everyone likes that he makes bad haikus. It’s silly; he gets minus 10000 aura points every time he does it; it looks like he doesn’t know his own subject; it makes you question how the god of poetry can possibly be bad at it, and yadayadayada. Apollo, get behind me! I’ll defend your case!
People are allowed to practice and to love a subject when they’re bad at it. An artist is an artist when they make art, even if it’s imperfect. I don’t think Apollo ended up as the god of so many subjects because he was just oh so perfect and immediately good at everything. I think him being bad at haikus in the pjo universe implies that he’s the god of poetry, archery, music, philosophy and so many other domains not because of his innate skills, but because of his passion for them. He loves these subjects enough to learn them, to practice even when he’s not good at them, even when no one likes what he’s doing, and everyone is making fun of him; all this because he truly loves the process and act of making it.
Poetry is a vast subject. It's also a subject subject, yk? There are so many ways to make poetry. So many types of poetry. And so many subjects! So many people defining what is good and what isn’t! What you are and aren't supposed to do! It’s hard to learn, it’s ever-changing. You can never really get to the bottom of it; there’s always more to learn, and you can keep going forever if you want to explore everything poetry has to give.
And Apollo wants! He knows god-knows how many types of poetry, from epics to sonnets, in god-knows how many languages, and he spends years, decades, centuries obsessing with them! And he’s not good at it from the get-go. But he’s doing it anyway; he’s getting the experience of being a baby artist with too much enthusiasm and not enough skill! And eventually, he’ll get better. He has all the time in the world for it, and he has the dedication and the passion that breeds a great artist.
This applies to everything else.
That’s the energy he brings to archery, which he’s great at, and he might have always been great at, but he knows that not everyone who explores his domain was born with a bow and an arrow in their hands and a natural talent; Percy wasn’t. He’s really bad at it. He’s terrible, it’s almost impressive.
And yet.
For all of the reasons stated above.
Of course Apollo knows that Percy can learn to shoot and become a good archer. Of course he thinks that Percy refusing his lessons just bc he’s bad at it is nonsense. He thinks shooting is fun; doing it in the chariot while flying over the U.S. is the best fun there is. The point is not being good, really; becoming good is inevitable, having fun is the reason. That’s the mentality! And he lives by it.
Also. Important to note. Let’s go back to Exhibit A.
He specifically said, “if [Percy] ever wanted archery lessons”...
Which implies he can still call in the favor!
Go for it, Percy!
That said, sorry for the typos (yk what happens when people learn english from ao3) and the long ramblings (#mymessypost), but thanks everyone for coming to my TedTalk, I hope you enjoyed my interpretations!
You know what would have been interesting? If Poseidon wasn't a foil to Gabe by being a good but absent dad where Gabe was a present but abusive parent, but if he foiled Gabe by being bad in a different way.
Imagine Percy getting paternal affection for the first time in his life but then slowly coming to the realization that Gabe was a bully who hated him, but Poseidon is a bully who loves him. Poseidon encouraging Percy's anger and violence because his sons are entitled to be as angry and violent as they want. Poseidon magic-ing him out of trouble for fighting at school because Percy should be allowed to hit whoever he wants!
It would change a lot of plot beats and would probably change what his relationship with Sally was like but it would be so interesting, wouldn't it?

May Parker taking care of Peter since his parents death, even after losing Ben, being his safe place after civil war, during Homecoming, and No Way Home, learning together with him how to tie a tie, driving him to wherever he needs to be, supporting him in everything he does, comforting him after his confrontation with Tony, standing by his side, even after finding out he’s Spider-man and after all of the hardships they go through throughout the movies, loving him as if he were her own son, and specifically choosing her last ever words to be a reminder for Peter to remain the good and responsible person he is.
MJ watching Peter so much, that she finds out he’s Spider-man on her own, running through a partially destroyed, possibly still dangerous London just to make sure he’s okay, sticking with him throughout No way Home, no matter what happened, wearing the necklace he gave her, even after losing her memories of him, and subconsciously (apparently) trusting Spider-Man in Brand New Day to keep her save.
Ned Leeds being Peter’s best and only friend since forever, becoming immediately his guy in the chair after finding out he’s Spider-Man, not hesitating to attack Shocker to save him, sticking with him no matter what, accidentally learning magic just because he wants to be there for Peter so desperately, becoming obsessed with finding out Spider-Man’s identity and being one of his biggest supporters, even after losing his memory of Peter.
Tony Stark visibly realizing how good of a person Peter is when he tells him why he goes out as Spider-Man in Civil War, secretly listening in to all the random voice messages he leaves him and Happy in Homecoming, talking about breaking the cycle his dad set up when it comes to how he treats Peter, saying if Peter dies it’s on him, building him suits that can protect him, saying “I lost the kid” as the very first thing once he returns to earth, keeping their picture routinely safe and clean for five whole years, deciding to help Steve and the others, and risking his own happy end, mainly because of Peter, staring at Peter like he’s a miracle come to life when he returns in Endgame, and immediately hugging him, while one of the most important battles in marvel history rages around them.
Happy Hogan sticking with Peter throughout Far from Home and No Way Home, supporting him during some of the darkest moments of his life, letting him and May move into his apartment, and seeing his best friend reflected in Peter.
Steven Strange, despite fighting with Peter for almost the entirety of No Way Home including himself when he says” everyone who loves you…we’re going to forget who you are.”
Frank Castle, who is going to seriously beef with Peter for probably 90% of Brand New Day, helping him out at the end and the trailer cutting to him and MJ, when May’s voice says, “But the people who love you, love you because you’re you.”
(Maybe) Jean Grey, who seems to be on the run from the government and specifically Bill Metzger and being wrongly accused, maybe finding in Peter one of her first real allies and friends in Brand New Day. (Possibly)
Bruce Banner, who will probably learn to accept Hulk with Peter’s help, and might find in him another friend he can talk science with.
The Hulk who might (if we follow the comics) find one of his first friends, who accept him, in Spider-Man.
Peter Parker, you are so miserable, despite being so loved, it makes me sick :((((((
It's still insane to me that Tom Holland's Peter Parker went through civil war, homecoming, infinity war, endgame and far from home, all before reaching the age Andrew's and Tobey's Peters were when they became Spider-Man.
Like, he was 14 in Civil War
15 in Homecoming
And 16 in infinity war, engame & far from home
While Andrew's and Tobey's Peters were both around 17 in their respective first movies.
In the same way that Percy remembers random fun facts about architecture because of Annabeth, he also remembers random fun facts about mechanical engineering because of Beckendorf :((
Nico’s age is like the final boss for every Riordanverse timeline, (which very much sucks since he is one of my favourite characters), however it is somewhat hilarious to me that you can easily argue that Nico is either 13, 14 or 15 during Heroes of Olympus, and all takes would be somewhat backed up by canon
If we go by PJO’s timeline, Nico is around 13 ½.
He was 12 during the last Olympian, which takes place roughly 11 months before house of hades, and his birthday has to be between between december and june:
Nico was the only one who didn't seem freaked out by Mrs. O'Leary's appearance. (…) He was only twelve, but he looked much older and sadder. (The Last Olympian, Chapter 5)
If we go by what is stated in this excerpt from House of Hades, he’s 14.
And if we go by the fact that he is supposed to be one year older than Hazel, he could even be 15, considering the fact that Rick seems to be oblivious to the fact that Hazel is actually 14 ½ during Hoo, if we follow her backstory.
Her 13th birthday was the 17th December 1941:
“Her most recent birthday. She’d just turned thirteen. But not last December – 17 December 1941, the last day she had lived in New Orleans. (The Son of Neptune, Chapter 5, Hazel)
Then she and her mom moved to Alaska for 6 months (so roughly until the 17th June 1942) :
Marie Levesque stood over the pit. In six months, her hair had turned as grey as lint. (…) She stared in horror at the thing in the pit. For months they’d been coming here, four or five nights a week as the Voice required. (The Son of Neptune, Chapter 17, Hazel)
Then, after Nico brought her back from the underworld, she spent around 9 months at Camp Jupiter before Percy arrived:
The first time Hazel had seen the legion assemble, she’d been so intimidated she’d almost slunk back to the barracks to hide. Even after being at camp for nine months, she still found it an impressive sight. (The Son of Neptune, Chapter 7, Hazel)
My problem now is that I would normally use PJO's timeline, simply because
the timeline inconsistencies aren't that bad in pjo
Nico's young age is pretty detrimental to his character in his PJO appearances
If you age Nico up, you have to age Bianca up as well, and her young age is also pretty important for her character (Bianca being only one year or even a couple months younger than Percy and Thalia would be pretty strange)
However, Nico being an older brother to Hazel is also very important for me:(
Looking back to this post, it's lowkey funny that, if we go by the 15-year-old timeline, and still say that Nico's birthday is between January and June (considering that he was 10 in Titan’s curse and 11 in battle of the labyrinth), Nico and Percy are only like 1 year and a few months apart age-wise.
Because Percy was in a four month magical coma before son of Neptune (From mid december to probably mid april), he is only 16 years and 7 months old in House of Hades, which takes place in mid august.
Their PJO age gap from 3 ½ years gets reduced by two years with this timeline, which is really insane actually.
Like, it's not the timeline I personally prefer, but it's wild that the possibility exists and is technically backed up by canon.
I love fics where characters react to canon, but the mischaracterization might kill me one of these days. people always get the gods so wrong.
like the god of knowledge and education would love museums, I don't know how people get that part so wrong. Apollo is also the god of logic and reasoning, for all his dramatics he's not some stupid jock
Hermes, too, gets so dumbed down it's ridiculous. the god of diplomacy, language and writing, not to mention a psychopomp. he's more then just a trickster god
then there is the villainization of Zeus and Hera, I promise Zeus isn't just an unreasonable tyrant and abusive father, and we're all aware Hera isn't just a jealous wife who kills all her husband's bastards on sight
another thing that bothers me is infantilization of Big 3 (tho the other gods also get that), yes the brother argue with each other as is normal with siblings but people never write them as proper, knowledgeable kings. like you people are aware all of them are kings who run an entire kingdom and not 3 teenagers who constantly argue woth each other about petty things, right?
I'm not even going to touch Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Athena, Dionysus, and esp Demeter bc I'm already pissed off.
Writing the gods is actually one of the things I struggle most with while writing my own reading the books fic for a multitude of reasons
Mainly because balancing writing them as the immortal, powerful, morally layered characters they are with the inherent silliness of the concept that is a reading the books fic and their PJO and Hoo characterization (which I can’t completely ignore, since the characters are literally reacting to the canon story) is often pretty difficult.
There are just so many things to keep in mind to keep the fic at least somewhat realistic, but also enjoyable to read.
For example, when the gods react to scenes where the demigods call some of the creeps, or act generally disrespectful towards them. I have to be careful to treat the reactions with the seriousness they deserve, while also not escalating the situation because A. that would become repetitive really quickly with the amount of times stuff like that happens in one way or another and B. realistically, mythology wise, mortals would receive really harsh punishments, which I obviously can’t include in my fic.
A lot of issues also stem from balancing such a relatively huge cast with so vastly different characters.
Having characters like Connor, Travis, Katie, Rachel etc. for more humoristic, grounded, and lighthearted characters on the one side, while gods like Zeus, hera, Hades, Poseidon, etc. on the other, while also keeping in mind the relationships the gods have with each other and the relationship they have to their mortal children, while also thinking about which god, or character should react to which scene can get pretty overwhelming at times
Plus, I started publishing my fic in I think October 2023, and since then I’ve delved far deeper into their characterizations and specifically their relationship to Percy, which changes the way I would characterize them nowadays (I think the most egregious example in my fic is how I wrote some of Dionysus’ reactions at the beginning and with some of the ways I characterized Athena (specifically because her pjo portrayal is so different from her mythological counterpart). I’ll certainly rewrite some scenes once I’m through with the lightning thief)
I just hope I’m not doing something too egregious, cause writing the gods was also one of the main reasons I started this fic in the first place :’))))))

I just got called racist, because I said Percy rejecting godhood had more to do with his desire to change the mythological world and his society for the better than with his feelings for annabeth.....
Looking back, my relationship with DC movies, Dc comics and Marvel comics is genuinly funny, because I could have easily become a die hard fan of both franchises far earlier in my life, had my choice of content been anything but abysmal on multiple occasions.
Like, the very first time I tried getting into DC movies was immediately after I became an MCU fan, and I thought I should give DC a shot as well.
Out of all the movies/ tv shows I could have possibly chosen, the movie I picked was Man of Steel, which, to this day, is one of my most disliked superhero movies oat and which made me very disinterested in superman as a character and dc as a whole for a couple years.
Had I instead chosen tv shows like smallville, teen titans, batman: the animated series, or movies like Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, other animated movies, the suicide squad, etc, I probably would have fallen in love with dc far earlier.
And then, a couple year later, i thought I should give DC comics a shot instead, and the run I chose was the new 52 Justice league run, which I still very much dislike, which I stopped reading after like 12 issues and which made me turn away from Dc again for a couple years.
Something which certainly would not have happened had I read comics like Batman and Robin: Year One, Static: Season One, World's Finest, Wonder Woman: Year One, Batman: The long halloween, Shazam: Hope, Superman smashes the Klan, etc. instead.
And when I tried to get into marvel comics, I started reading the original Spider-Man run from the 1960s, which.... doesn't exactly hold up to modern standards. (At least not for me)
(Don't get me wrong. I obviously appreciate this run and what it did for Peter Parker's character and world, but i'm not going to pretend like the writing from 1960, where like 90% of things are told instead of shown, still hold up, especially to someone new to comics.)

I still can't believe Heroes of Olympus had the audacity to introduce the concept of the gods having a roman form, of Neptune being feared and disrespected by the romans, of Percy, inspite of this, becoming praetor, of Percy beginning to explore the "darker side of his powers, of percy defeating the arch nemesis of Poseidon/ Neptune practically by himself, yet still chose not to have a single appearance of Neptune or a single interaction between him and Percy
