"If you can't read, get someone to read this book to you. It will make more sense then."
--Excerpt from Advances in Lockpicking
One con of living in Skyrim is the near total lack of sunlight for 2 thirds of the year Coupled with the lethal cold and deep snow buildup within city walls due to a lack of snowplows. This is why I propose the headcannon that one of the purposes of the jarl's court wizard is snow removal via the use of magic.
i'll just leave this here for anyone who sees "from the river to the sea" as a threat

new eddie and robin for stranger things day!!!
one of the things i hate most about masking is that iām giving out a false projection of myself to people that i desperately want to know the real me
Autistic Masking
Feeling very shy and finding it difficult to interact with others
Rehearsing conversations in your head
Watching others and reflecting the social behaviors
Desperately trying not to info-dump about your current hyper focus
Using scripts in conversation
Fighting the urge to stim
Hiding sensory discomfort
Making eye contact even though it's uncomfortable
The Autistic Teacher
Masking
Sometimes my lips just refuse to form words properly and they come out jumbled, slurred or mumbled.

There was this clip I saw of Young Sheldon where, in order to learn how to interact with people better, he reads How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It is supposed to be a joke, but let me tell you my autistic ass did the same thing when I was a teenager ā ļø
Autistic girls: This fabric is tight and chafing and I just canāt stand how everything is is TOUCHING me right now!!!Ā Thus, my favorite outfits will consist of soft, loose clothing that will bother me the least.
_____: Your clothes look pretty masculine.Ā Are you sure youāre actually a girl?
Autistic girls: Iāve got a wide spectrum of interests and Iām really obsessed with a few of them to the point of creeping people out.Ā For some reason, there are more depictions of boys like this in the media than girls.
_____: Girls definitely donāt usually act like that.Ā Weāve seen the media too.Ā Maybe you arenāt oneā¦
Autistic girls: Men started sexualizing me even before I hit puberty, my peers bullied me for being weird and annoying, and other adults in my life took my eccentricities to mean that I was smart in some way; some pushed me academically, some pushed me to socially conform for my own happiness.Ā I donāt want any of these expectations, I just want to exist.
_____: OOOH you donāt identify as a girl at all, you identify as a person!Ā And girls arenāt just people, thatās why youāre not a girl!Ā Letās get you some pills gels injections paperwork surgeries healthcare!
Wishing to āgo muteā is not a normal trait to have and Iām to finally address that.
De-masking has stopped me from forming a lot of conversations I donāt want to have or care about. So I started learning sign language.
Besides advocating that everyone should learn a little bit of sign language, itās actually helped me in being able to communicate with my partner better.
I usually shut down when Iāve gotten frustrated (Iāve always done this, now Iām just conscious of why) I canāt accurately describe my emotions in the moment and I canāt physically force myself to talk. Iām still now sure if I āgo muteā but if mute is how you describe physically unable to say words for a short period of timeā¦.?
Itās not just with talking about emotions but I believe that to be my main ātriggerā for not talking. I also know that sign language makes it easier for me to make eye contact and communicate.
Also texting rather than saying words out loud is a āØchef kiss⨠feeling. I can better articulate words that donāt hurt feelings because of tone or meltdowns that literally obliterate any compassion. So breathing and texting simple āyouāve hurt my feelings and Iām mad at youā is a whole lot better than punching and kicking.
hear me out: i think autistic people were the storykeepers of communities before colonization. wait wait wait donāt scroll away yet. i have thought to back up my theory.
autistic people memorize large swaths of information that are interesting to us, many of us love art that has a moral/a story/which moves us, we have huge imagination worlds, we see/hear/feel things others donāt, we are highly analytical and see patterns other people canāt, weāre able to see the interconnectedness of the universe bc we see how the little parts make the whole, we have a strong sense of justice, weāre highly emotional/in tune with other peopleās emotions (when given the space to be), our intuition is generally spot-on, etc (of course iām speaking in generals and autism is not a monolith, this is just what iāve personally been putting together over the course of the last year. also thereās a lot more but i have hw to do that iām avoiding by writing this so if anyone wants to have a conversation ab this iām more than willing to go deeper in depth later)
and then thereās the bit where autistic people tend to exist outside of the gender binary at higher rates than allistic people (also just neurodivergent people in generalā again, not all, but a good amount). and when you look up what roles Two-Spirit people in different Indigenous communities are/always have been, itās generally something like storykeeper/teacher/medicine person/spiritual guide etc (iām NOT claiming that every non-binary or two spirit person is autistic, iām just noting the correlation)
i started thinking about this because i was curious as to what my role wouldāve been had i been born before colonization fucked everything up. this thought process helped me not only ācome to termsā with my autism, but actually helped me love it. i donāt know if iām right, and iām open to have my thought processes challenged. i just thought if the idea that you have always served a purpose to this community, you have always been an integral part of the community, helped one more autistic person love themselves, iād share it.
