Something to Remember Pt. 1/3
Damian Wayne x Reader Angst
💚//Where the reader dies too soon and Damian is in denial//
1k Words
The memories come but they don’t go. Would it be better to forget they even happened? It would be better to forget this happened. How he wanted to wipe it from his eyes, no, it shouldn’t have happened. He should have stopped it from happening. The cool night air whipped through the dark cave. Wind- in a cave? Damian narrowed his eyes. 3 miles deep into the underground caverns, wind is not unusual to caves but not within this cave.
“Mother.” Damian barely looked up, still kneeled on the cold, cave floors.
The stalactites seemed to him sharp teeth, holding him in the jaws of the little chamber. A drop of water fell, but not from the stalactite. He didn’t wipe it, not sparing a glance to his mother.
“I forbid you to mourn her in the least.” Cold. His mother saw through him instantly. “She was nothing. A mere distraction." Talia, clad in all white, seemed to be a demon at this moment, trying to take his angel’s memories.
“I will feel how I feel, mother.” Damian petulantly spat out.
She scoffs in derision. “Love is weakness. Or have you learned nothing?”
“I will feel how I feel.” He repeated, seething.
Damian usually isn’t one to hold onto memories. All his life, he was raised to be the arm of the demon. Affection kills action. And in moments of danger, he couldn’t afford to hesitate. But with her- the other side of his personality struck. Damian has always been stubborn when he puts his mind to something. And if he wanted to mourn her, he would.
He thought back to where it all began. The memories he wanted, needed to remember her.
They had met in the first semester at Gotham University, a history lecture to be exact. Born to be a killer, Damian thought he had changed paths. He was going to follow in the footsteps of Thomas Wayne, and become a doctor. His family needed one constantly and having one in house would be greatly useful. Even though every single member of the Batclub and its extended family had some sort of medical skill, to him, it was also symbolic. To turn away from the life of violence and be a healer.
So what was a pre-med major doing in a history lecture? Chasing after a girl? In his own words, “-TT.” He was missing a credit, and history seemed like the simplest course at the time. Not that that mattered to not only Batman but also the league of Assassin's heir. He took a seat in the front, already assuming he was the most prepared student in the room. Not only had he read the full textbook, but he had already written every single essay required for the year. Showing up to class was just a mere obligation. The syllabus stated he only needed to attend at least three times. So that’s what he planned to do.
Until he showed up in the next week. And the next. And the week after that. All for that stupid girl. Flowy pink long-sleeved minidress, white chunky sneakers, his first impression of her was her irritating crunching of the grapes in her zip-loc bag.
“Couldn’t you have eaten before class?” He lifted his chin to examine her more, slightly irritated.
“Want one?” She replied, unbothered.
“No.” He scowled. Jasmine, and cherry blossoms. She smelled good, he thought to himself. Stupid. It’s stupid. Why did he care what she smelled like? Damian furrowed his brow, wishing that the lecture would begin already. He must be losing his touch. Mongolian history. How mundane. He turned to study her again. Dark brown hair. Strikingly focused on the lecture. She still hadn’t noticed him. She needs to develop more spatial awareness, he thought. Not going to survive a day in Gotham. He frowned, glancing down at her body. Beautiful. She was focused on her notes, having stopped eating those godforsaken grapes. Be a gentleman he mentally slapped himself. He looked at her notes. She was smart too. Perfect. Too perfect. 30 minutes into the lecture, and he was already, insufferably, infatuated.
“Done staring?”
So she did notice. “I wasn’t looking at you.” He blatantly lied.
“You were very focused on the lecturer.” she countered, sarcastically, leaning over to examine his blank notepad.
“I have a photographic memory.” This part, at least, was true.
“Where was Genghis Khan born?”
“You really think I wouldn’t know?”
“Of course you’d know, so tell me.” She smirked, though not in a condescending way.
She’s the kind of song you could play forever.
“Fine. I wasn’t paying attention.”
“(y/n)”
“What?”
“My name’s (Y/n).”
“Hmm. Damian.”
That was the first time they met. He didn’t end up following his plan. He made it his mission to show up to every single history class after that. His thoughts go back to the present, how she died.
Did I ever cross your mind again? Falling. She died while falling. He wondered if she was thinking of him. Hoping that he would be there to catch her. But he wasn’t. He failed. 50 feet off the edge of an underground cliff. Practically zero chance of survival? But what if?
“There’s no way.”
“Excuse me, Grayson?”
“I’m sorry Damian, but you need to let go. No one could survive that.”
“The lazarus pit-”
“Won’t work if you don’t have a body.”
One month since she died. As long as he kept my eyes closed, she’s still there, lying right back in my arms again. That was her favorite place. Knock on the door. Dick Grayson. “What do you want, Grayson?"
“I made you food.” After no response, Dick called out again. “Ox blood stew. Like your moms.”
“I don’t want anything to do with my mother.”
“She didn’t kill her, Damian.”
“You don’t understand, it was her fault.”
Authors note: Hi! This is my first fanfic I've ever wrote, I am so happy if you enjoyed reading this. Heavily inspired by the song "Something to remember" by Matt Hansen.
