idk man⦠this studyblr/gradblr thing is really motivational and all, but man⦠anybody else struggle to get their papers written on time? anybody else suck at waking up in the mornings? sleep way too late and sometimes end up skipping class? anybody ever go to class without having done the reading for the day? just to lie about and pretend to act smart like the rest of your classmates? late assignments? fuck it days?Ā
does everybody on this site really have their shit together but me???????Ā
eyyyy sounds like me! my college career was a damn mess: skipped classes to sleep in/take naps, canceled on meetings bc i was just too damn tired, withdrew from a handful of classes bc ugh, procrastinated like hell, really didnt prepare well for my post-college life until well, after college⦠and i think i turned out ok, mess and all. I def learned a lot and worked really hard to be self-disciplined, but even now in grad school i still struggle at waking up in the morning (i snooze in bed for 2 hrs sometimes.. yeah itās baaaad), and sometimes i just sit at my desk and scroll through tumblr for half an hour instead of working. i still get shit done tho, but yeah, sometimes it just be like that.
but i will say: itās never about motivation. Motivation is fickle; discipline is the name of the game. Motivation may be the spark that lights the fire, but self-discpline is getting the firewood that will actually keep you warm.
I too am a hot-mess-in-progress. Sometimes I am really proud that I somehow got through the end of an impossible week! Sometimes I wonder how I got this far at all.
The truth is that for every 10 inspirational posts you see, maybe only a fraction do that level of work consistently. If you do a cute or organize, of course youāre gonna wanna share it. But who uploads the papers strewn across the couch and unwashed coffee mugs piling up and empty takeout boxes on the floor?
Sometimes youāre ON IT, and you should absolutely be proud, but keep that pride when you struggle. Shuffle along as best you can. Like cbphd said, itās not motivation. Itās discipline. Determination. Pure-ass stubbornness. Eventually you hit that ānow or neverā point. I guess my goal is just to shift its boundary progressively backwards so not everything is last minute?
Anyway do the thing!
you guys⦠thank you so much for this. I definitely needed it. I was so caught up with feelings of incompetence, constantly comparing myself with other people, etc., and honestly this site was just making me feel more useless than anything but iām so glad to hear that other people are struggling just as much as i am. grad school is haaaard. i mean obviously but they never do tell you about the sleepless nights and endless reading/writingĀ anyways.. Iād love to know if you guys have any tips on self-discipline? or any tips on how to actually get started on work/avoid procrastinating? how your work (or writing) process is?Ā
@cancerbiophd @doughygraduatestudentĀ @themaybemd (or anybody else in school for that matter)Ā
for sure! the illusion that everyone here is always 100% on top of their things is def just an illusion. our online appearances are all carefully selected to only what we want others to see. when the truth is we are all quite the same.
so for self-discipline, i rely on two things:
the mindset thatĀ āhey this thing needs to get done, and no one else is gonna do it for me, so i better do itā. oddly enough, theĀ āfake it till you make itā mindset helps with this. see here: ājulia the introvertā is not fond of making phone calls, butĀ ājulia the grad student who needs to find out more info on x reagent bc my research depends on itā is willing to make the call to the vendor. and when iām making that call, i try my hardest to adopt the 2nd persona.Ā
scheduling EVERYTHING. i donāt trust present!julia. present!julia is a fickle fool who loves naps too much. but past!julia is great at scheduling in an entire dayās worth of tasks down to the hour, sometimes weeks in advance (using google calendars; but paper planners work too!). So pesent!julia doesnāt even have to think about whether or not she feels motivated because she has a handy dandy schedule to follow (almost like a class schedule). i even schedule in things like reminders (i just put them in around the time i think iāll need to do it). And the great thing about an electronic calendar is if task 1 takes 30 min longer than expected, you can just move the other tasks 30 min later. Also, present!julia has the memory capacity of a pebble, so if i schedule in something the moment i finalize it (like a drās apt, or lunch with a friend), then i donāt have to use my precious finite brain cells to remember it; i just look at my schedule every day/week/month to figure out what i need to do next :)
as for my work/writing process:
i divide my writing into bite-sized tasks. sitting down to write a 3 page article is intimidating as heck. but sitting down to write a 10 sentence introduction is super doable. so i make a to-do list of sorts where i break down a huge assignment into small tasks (and iām sure to include things like research, mind-mapping, outlining, proof-reading, etc)
oh and i always start with an outline. forming sentences is hard, but jotting down ideas is easy. i have a description of other ways i get started on large writing assignments here.Ā
i schedule in my writing time and treat it like a class, andĀ i schedule everything ahead of time until i reach the due date, so that way iāll be sure to have the time to work on it and wonāt be scrambling last minute to do 10 things in one day (aka procrastinating). i also wonāt have that overwhelming feeling of not knowing if i have enough time for something bc hey, iāve scheduled it ahead of time, so no worries! i usually like to give myself more time that needed just in case, and it also feels good to get done earlier than planned!
so thatās what i do :) hopefully that helps, or gives you ideas on something else that may work best for you! best of luck out there. you can do it!!
09/100 days of productivity I had my chemistry exam today and Iām really happy with how it went! I finally found a good balance between study and hobbies and so it was the least stressful exam I have ever done. To release all my built up stress for my chemistry exam this evening I started this productive day with a 15km walk/run, which was really helpful! Then as study breaks I read one of my favourite childhood books- drawing with light.
