Oh, the Winter Masquerade is in full swing now (as much as any Winter affair can be, really) and someone in a slinky gold dress embelleshed with a multitude of stars has just stepped off the dance floor. Her mask only covers the top half of her face, and is matte black with sprinklings of gold stars to match her gown. Ginger greet?
Ginger catches her eye and flashes a bright grin before slinking over to her without so much as a word of farewell to the people he had been engaged with.
Heâs dressed in an outfit that canât seem to decide if itâs a dress or a suit with a cape, with colours that shift in the light from bright pinks to rusted golds, and shot through with glitter that matches the sparkles that litter his hair and skin, his mask is likewise a mess of shining colourful glitter. In all, it should look like a childâs craft project, with such garish colours and with just so much glitter, but somehow it hits on a lavish opulence that straddles the line between pure class and complete trash instead.
âDarling, you look gorgeousâ he doesnât have any idea who the delightful figure in gold is of course, and he wouldnât be surprised if heâs never even met her before, but a little thing like that isnât going to stop him greeting her (and anyone else at the masquerade for that matter) as an old friend, âIsnât this just delightful? I havenât been to a party like this in, oh, just too longâ
Ginger looks at her with confusion for a moment as he runs back through what he said.
âOh, right, old habits,â he says with a laugh, waving a hand dismissively, âI meant his majesty king of England, not that thereâs been one of those in quite a while⌠I do need to work on my turns of phrase something awfulâ
âI wonât tell, donât worry.â She smiles and shakes her head, putting a friendly hand on his shoulder.
âIs a dance still on the table?â
âOh absolutely, darlingâ Ginger tosses back the rest of his drink, and offers his hand, âI do believe the next song is just startingâ
Astra drains the rest of her drink and takes his hand. âPerfect timing, really.â
When they reach the dancefloor, she keeps quite close to him, maybe a little closer than is strictly appropriate for someone youâve just met. But sheâs watching him, too. If he seems uncomfortable sheâll absolutely back off.
Itâs certainly a first for Ginger to find himself on this side of things and heâs starting to appreciate just how awkward it is.
âI fear I mightâve given you something of the wrong impression,â he swallows back the instinct to end the phrase with âdarlingâ, more punctuation than term of endearment to him, but heâs dimly aware itâs not so for others, âI- well, thatâs my boyfriend over there, and well, yes. Just so youâre awareâ
Ginger tilts head to indicate a very buff dude in a surprisingly cheap looking Phantom of the Opera costume, given the way Ginger himself is dressed.
âOhfuck-â Astra goes very red and takes half a step back.
âGod Iâm so sorryâŚâ she offers an apologetic smile. âI uhâŚif you donât wanna dance anymore I totally get it.â
âNo no no, itâs quite alright darling, itâs my fault really. I offered you a dance, and I should like to see it through. Unless you donât want to dance with me anymore and were trying to bow out gracefully, in which caseâŚâ He gave a dramatic frown, and continued on in mock offense âI couldnât possibly dance with someone who offended my honour so, leave my sight immediately!â
The effect was somewhat lost in the giggling that followed.
Astra giggles back. âWell then. Itâs settled. A dance it is.â
She has the rhythm and grace of an accomplished dancer, and lets him lead hear around the dance floor, half an eye on him. Most of her concentration is on the party, though, and she gasps in delight as a someone walks by wearing a suit made out of what looks like purple and orange vines.
âEveryone looks so wonderful.â
Although Ginger is certainly not the best dancer in all creation, heâs also not the worst by a long shot, and has the easy confidence in it that comes from being brought up with the expectation that one should know how to dance for formal occasions.
âOh certainly, every sight better than the last, Iâm enamoured of all of them. Reminds me of the wild costume parties of my youthâ
âThis is a costume party of my youth - Iâm sure Iâll have things to say about these when Iâm old. WhenâŚwere you young?
Ginger gasps, âI have to say, Iâm offended. Most people say I still am young, nothing but a slip, prime of my youth. Which I am, mind youâ he smiles and preens a little before conceding, âBut I was born around the turn of the centuryâ
Astra laughs. âYou canât talk about âparties of your youthâ and not expect me to be curious as to when it was. And to be fair, I canât see a bit of your face, how am I supposed to know anything about your age?â Her tone is lightly teasing.
"Oh fine, I'll grant you that one darling," Ginger laughs, clearly more prone to dramatics than true offence, he pauses for a moment, watching people move about with a smile, "The one thing this party needs to elevate it to true heights is a proper farce, a drunken game of some sort perhaps"

Ginger was a whirlwind of glitter and energy in the hours leading up to the masquerade. The way he flittered about Ferdaâs apartment and left chaos in his wake, one would scarce believe that there was any awkwardness left between the two of them. Or maybe that was precisely why Ginger was such a bundle of energy, well, that was among the most likely explanations, but whoâs counting anyway?
Ferda more or less has himself together in the time it takes him to find a clean shirt and pair of pants⌠Or so he thought until Ginger got exasperated with him about not GETTING THE POINT of a masquerade. Which is exactly what Ferda was waiting for, and pulls out a âŚwell, honestly itâs not that impressive. The cape and vest are pretty bargain bin as far as costumes go, but the Half-Face-Mask is incredibly well made and is obviously why the rest of his âphantom of the operaâ costume is so WalMart-ish. A lad has to have budgets in mind!
Ferda grins BROADLY and SMUGLY at Ginger, moving forward to gather GInger up in a huge hug, brain-talking at his boyfriend in an almost indecipherable mass of noise and concepts. Itâs impossible to pick out any one individual thread alone, because itâs like having five radios on at the same time- but the over all impression is excitement and radiant positivity. âIâve already found it. Itâs. Not this good.â He gestures at the grainy, half-loaded, lagging imagry on the tv, âBut it exists. Someone converted it to data a very long time ago. And if itâs data, I can find it.â well, not really, but in layman terms thatâs close enough to truth to count.
âDarling youâre incredible, and I love youâ Ginger freezes for a split second as he realises that probably went through and barrels onwards to compensate, âA marvel, truly. Your costume is positively perfect darling, no alterations needed. We should go soon I expect, one does aim for fashionably late, but it can be taken too far you know, and-â
At this point Gingerâs mind is basically just static as he jumps from thought to thought in increasingly quick succession
Ferda honestly processes the latter half of the commentary before the former- though not on purpose. The truth of the concept is evident through their link (though, so too is his âwait what, did, what, wait, whatâ catchup). Then he strides forward and bodily lifts Ginger in his arms, grinning like an idiot as nervously hopeful excitement bleeds through their mental link. âLove?â, ⌠âŚÂ âLove?â, .. ⌠âŚÂ âLove~ ALso love!â Oh man. Nervousness takes over. Did he go too far? Did he read too much into it? what if Ginger didnât mean to say that? Ginger afraid? IS ginger afraid? Should Ferda be nervous for reciprocating? Even though itâs not intended, there are first person perspectives of laying in bed with Ginger curled up against him. There are flashes of Ferda being the one asleep, waking up to being wrapped up around, or wrapped up in gingerâs arms. The concept of having more of that to look forward to- lazy mornings, curt hurried âoh shit imma be late wheres my shirtâ breakfasts, coffee dates. Old grey homebody arguments in scripted in-joke style⌠Ferda wants that.Â
Ginger squeaks as he's lifted, but after the initial surprise he cuddles into Ferda and just basks in it all. He hadn't meant to say it, not really at all, but that was only because he was still trying to work it all out himself. And with the feelings and pictures he's getting from Ferda he really can't bring himself to regret it.
He doesn't have words for it, nor does he have quite the romantic images Ferda does, because even the concept is really quite new to him. But there are a few brief snippets of memories that slip through, the things that had really made him think about it: curled up on the couch together half watching something and occasionally throwing popcorn while laughing, determined concentration on learning a language, and the platter of cold meats and cheeses Ferda had made for him once.

Ginger stops in his tracks to stare at Ferda, his mouth opening and shutting as he tries and fails to come up with a decent reason why that is absolutely not what Ferda should be wearing. After a long moment he settles instead on focussing his attention on rummaging through Ferdaâs closet to see what kind of actually decent costume could be scrounged together at such short notice. His phone is somewhere in amongst his search, perfectly obvious and easily found to him, but likely less so to anyone else
âDarling, I swear youâre doing this on purposeâ
âWhat?â He actually looks a bit disappointed that the reveal isnât received with enthusiasm. He thought it was clever, darn it! âIsnât this what one wears to a masquerade? Itâs like Halloween, right?â Damn, and he spent a lot of money on that forking mask, tooâŚ
âI suppose you could say itâs like Halloween, but thatâs hardly the pointâ
After a thorough perusal of Ferdaâs wardrobe, he settles on, well, defeat. Heâs still racking his brains for possible solutions when he actually looks at Ferda, and then all the energy drains out of him and is replaced by a rare soft smile
âActually, itâs perfect. Youâre perfect. Iâm just getting carried awayâ
Ferda reaches out and holds a hand flat parallel to the ground above Gingers head and then lets it.. Controlled fall to âPAFâ on the crown of Gingers head. He purses his lips, with air puffing out against the tight seal to give his upper lip a rounder look. âShush you. Unless youâre elaborating. What did you have in mind, I might have something in storage.â Storage? NO FUCKING WONDER FERDAS PLACE IS SO SPARCE. Homeboy himbo has a storage unit. âItâll probably have a stale smell, but I had to put all my extra junk -somewhere- and leaving it at my momâs place was not an option.â
Ginger laughs, and brightens considerably at the mention of stuff in storage.
âHonestly I havenât the foggiest where to begin, the mask is lovely, but darlingâ he gestures vaguely at Ferdaâs ensemble, âWhat is this supposed to be?â
Ferda holds it up to his head, the light weight ceramic covering half of his face and leaving his other cheek and mouth exposed, eyes concealed. âPhantom of the opera!â Ginger has a very shadowed impression of a whirling cloak, mystery, longing, excitement, and a swell of music that is more felt in the chest than anything really resembling âheardâ, even in his head. Ferda fucking -LOVES- phantom of the opera! And the feeling of loving someone from the shadows and only the shadows resonated with him even before he knew what âgayâ was.
âThe Phantom of the Opera?â Gingerâs surprise is palpable, and tempered by an excitement that Ferda had read a book or seen a movie from his own time. He looks over the costume again, and he tries, he really does but âIâm afraid I just donât see it, darlingâ
Itâs the mask thatâs throwing him more than anything, the clothes were mostly reminiscent of the 80s (1880s, that is), but that mask was just odd. It was supposed to fully cover the face, for one.
Ferda calls up his laptop and tv hookup without even actually having to speak a word or tap a key. On the screen, in.. Grainy, youtube-that-canât-fully-load quality, comes the theme song as the actor and actress sing to each other call-and-repeat, with techno-esque organs and strings reverberating alongside horns and other less noticable orchestral instruments. The mask is easy to identify, and even though the cloak and tuxedo came from a halloween-bargain-bin bag at kmart or something akin to it⌠The effect is OBVIOUS just from looking at the costume on its hanger. Ferda, for all that itâs a budget level costume, actually managed to nail it pretty fucking close.
Ginger does not scrabble and fall over the back of the couch and into the seat in his attempt to get closer to the TV, absolutely not. But he is entranced,
"Well, I stand corrected. Oh this is delightful, darling." He keeps switching from watching the TV to grinning at Ferda, "You really must show me the full thing sometime. And we can see if the movie- well I suppose it must be the first movie now, is still around somewhere. I saw it at the cinema you know"

'Darling, I swear you're doing this on purpose'
"Oh, right, old habits," he says with a laugh, waving a hand dismissively, "I meant his majesty king of England, not that there's been one of those in quite a while... I do need to work on my turns of phrase something awful"

I havenât been to a party like this in, oh, just too longâ
She responds with a nod and a warm grin, her gold metallic lip color shimmering in the light as she does. This close, itâs easy to see just how delicate her dress is, gossamer thin tulle with embroidered stars over a black and gold base. The whole thing moves with her beautifully, and complements her warm brown skin.
âThank you - I could say the same for you. The colors, the glitterâŚitâs lovely.â Sheâs entirely serious, and gives him an appreciative once-over.
Ginger presses a hand to his hand to his chest in a show of âoh who, me? Youâre too kind, thank youâ that really ought to have looked more modest than it did,
âOh youâre just too kind darling, it was so hard to find something that would be just rightâ he smiles, and extends a hand in a fluid motion, âIs it too soon to ask for a dance?â
âI was thinking about finding something to drink, but I wouldnât say no to a dance.â She takes his hand. Her nails are painted matte black, with art deco-esque designs in gold.
He makes a slight clicking noise between his teeth and gives a small shake of the head,
âNo no, drinks are far more important, darling.â Ginger grins, and leads her to the buffet tables rather than the dancefloor, since heâs got hold of her hand anyway, âHave you tried the punch? Itâs delightfulâ
âMore than once,â she laughs. âItâs absolutely delightful. I may regret how much Iâve had tomorrow morning, but thatâs tomorrow.â
âIs it really a party worth being at if you donât regret it the next day?â
She giggles. âDefinitely not. I took tomorrow off for a reason.â She sips her punch.
âPlanning in advance, good thinkingâ Ginger laughs, stirring his drink idly. The more astute observer might notice that he seems to be doing more stirring than drinking, but heâs still keeping pace with his conversation partner. He hums a little, before he continues, âSo tell me darling, have you been to one of these before?â
âI wouldnât miss them for the world, theyâre always such a good time. I never say no to an excuse to dress up and eat fancy food on someone elseâs budget. How about you?â
"Oh this is my first, I haven't had the opportunity before, but if I had, trust me, all his majesty's armies couldn't have kept me away"
