2019 was such a great year speaking of readings: I discovered new genres, got inspired by marvelous authors and finally found what I want to achieve as a writer. As I got asked about the books I’ve read by @nobilior and @wafflewarrior80 , I’m gonna list a top 10 of my favourite reads among the 41 from the goodreads challenge.
1. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is for sure at the first place. I was hooked by her writing but also the dark academia vibes that influenced my whole persona. As a classical studies student and a mystery > crime enthusiast, I totally recommend it !
2. The Iliad by Homer of course was a great read for the first half of the summer, when the weather was nice and sunny and I woke up early, I’d stay in bed reading for hours. I am a Greek Roman mythology passionate and I couldn’t have not started with one of the most popular classics.
3. John Keats selected poems I had never read Keats before now and I love him?! I admit it wasn’t and easy reading but it’s beautiful written, and again, many poems are based on Greek Roman myths.
4. Autumn by Ali Smith from the Seasonal Quartet Series was another revelation; the writing is unique, unusual and poetic, at times. I loved this book so much, I can’t wait to read more.
5. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is another classic that fits winter time instead, and it’s always a pleasure to re-read. This is my mother’s favourite book so I bought it mainly for this reason and I found it amazing ! The plot and the characters, everything is perfect in this book.
6. Why I write by George Orwell is a tiny book I got because I wanted to read Orwell’s essays about writing and they are so interesting. The majority of the book is about politics: WWII, capitalism, socialism and fascism during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
7. Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman I’ve read it for my October TBR, after watching the movie every Halloween night, I picked up the book. Despite being completely different from the movie adaptation, I think the book is more detailed which I appreciated a lot.
8. The Waves by Virginia Woolf, she is one of my favourite authors, her writing is superb and since I was fascinated by the steam of conscious, I couldn’t wait to read this book. A masterpiece, as always.
9. Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman I had mixed feeling reading this; I enjoyed the movie adaptation a lot and I read the book right after, despite it’s really well written it’s a little repetitive, but overall I enjoyed it, and Elio is always too cute, I can’t help it.
10. Ulysses by James Joyce was the most challenging book of 2019, I read it twice and still couldn’t figure it out completely. Nevertheless I put it on the list because his realistic description of the characters, the symbolism and the poetry of the words were actually brilliant.
