Just finished City Council of Darkness!
Been awhile since I had the energy to draw anything but this campaign was so silly and such a blast I had to make their family portrait🦇
IM NOT A PERVERT!!!!!!!! Darkness Man bc im already rewatching CCOD
Wait lmfao. Wait, wait, wait. Darkness man’s entire arc kind of has the feel of a Hallmark holiday romance.
Overworked superhero coming from the big city to a small town. He’s exhausted by his old life and yearns for something simpler and more true to his ideals. Something closer to Omaha. Meets this really cute, calm dude that tries to get him to relax and take part in a local [monster] pastime. Takes him on a night hike. Asks him out for another in the future.
Cody isn’t the exact reason Darkness Man stays, buuuuut… he is a large contributing factor to Mitch’s happiness in choosing to stay because he gets another superhero partner to form a league with.
Let Darkness Man be the lead in a Hallmark Christmas movie rom com. He was made for the part. And the little Italian dog is there too.

My absolute gospel truth and I'm sorry this is so sappy but--where I'm living, Ilya fully changes his name to Hollander when they get married, like just fully legally changes it. And despite the fact that he continues to use Rozanov professionally ("Just like J. Lo," Ilya says.) everyone who knows them personally obviously knows what Ilya's legal name is and also assume it's a way to kind of stick it to his shitheel father. To this end, and kind of as a joke at first, people start referring to their two-person unit as The Hollanders ("Okay, the Hollanders are in room 508" etc.) but it becomes steadily less and less a joke when neither Shane or Ilya really seems to think of it as one. Ilya especially seems to genuinely love it. He'll say shit like "Oh yes the Hollanders will be there" when asked if they're coming to a barbecue like they live in a postcard. He LOVES to give his name as Ilya Hollander and he LOVES to book reservations under 'Misters Hollander' and he LOVES to say the words 'Shane and Ilya Hollander' out loud with his mouth. I also think that for their last game together in the league Ilya and Shane wear jerseys that say S. Hollander 24 and I. Hollander 81 and it's like. An end of an era type thing. And they frame the jerseys.
I think I've figured it out. During the Trapper and Henry years, no one was pretending to be nice (except for Frank, that one time "it's nice to be nice to the nice"). No one is actually claiming to be all that good of a person. They may be better surgeons or better than that guy, but they're not *nice*. But BJ thinks he's nice. He thinks he's a good guy. A good husband, a good doctor, a good person. And people (the characters) buy into it because they want to; they want the nice guy unsullied by this absurd war. And BJ doesn't handle it well whenever he might have to admit he's not nice and maybe never was. Because what good is nice in a war zone?
an underappreciated genre of hawkeye is when an activity requires no hawkeye and he's kind of just lurking and pissing everyone off
I think that life back home after Korea felt a lot like living in a Edward Hopper-painting to Margaret. Isolated, lonley. Like she was watching life go on around her, but couldn't really relate. The light harsh, angular, the shadows deep. The shapes and forms too, no more tents that moved in the wind, with the sound of other people constantly present, just massive, unmoving walls, looming, and waiting, just like her. Waiting for her real life to begin, for her to feel all the things she thought she would, to be swept up and embraced by the world she had chosen to live in.
(Automat, Morning Sun, Room in New York, Sunlight in a Cafeteria)
She would see her friends in strangers in the street. A bad posture, a big mustache, a bald head shining in the sun. Or friendly eyes in a wrinkly face, but they were only just echoes of the real people. Of her family. Her yellow sunrise-pillow she had carried back all across the world would look stupid on her new bed, so she'd throw it in a closet and try to forget it existed, try and stop making her new home remind her of her real one. A tent wasn't a real home anyway, it was stupid to think of it like that, stupid to long for it. She had chosen her new life, and she would get used to it, damn it, that's what a Houlihan did, they adapted. Even if the light was too harsh, the shadows too deep, and it felt like her back was always turned away from everyone else.
i think we got both cody x darkness man and nancy danderhoof kissing darkness man's cheek in the ccod finale because brennan was flirting with maxwell through like four different npcs in cloudward ho and although he got close with torse, didn't really get to a canon relationship so now he's just out for blood
Torsewell you're real in my heart

i actually think that what's being missed in the 'why does everyone love heated rivalry' conversation is just that it's good
it's well made, well shot, well directed, the music is interesting, the costumes are both thoughtful and subtly period accurate, the sex scenes are intentional and, again, accurate to what hooking up when you're like 18 actually feels like...the actors are of course attractive but they look like real people. the characters are varied and well fleshed out, the acting is really, really strong
so many shows and films shoot and then slot in whatever music kind of fits or could be licenced in the budget after time, but you can tell that the scenes in hr were shot with that specific music in mind. and the same intentional approach runs through the whole thing
it feels...so nice to watch a show that cares about itself
Nobody knew in advance that this show would become a massive international phenomenon. It was a mid-budget Canadian show (which means low budget by US standards) adapted from a Harlequin romance novel. The deal with HBO for US distribution rights was only signed a few weeks before it began to air.
But everybody involved treated it as if it was serious art anyway. Not just some little Canadian streaming show that might well disappear after airing. Based on a book from a genre that is usually ridiculed by people who consider themselves serious film people. The cast, the crew, the writer/director, the music supervisor, everybody. They all did their best work for love of the game.
Didn't post yesterday because my brain fog was bad from zero sleep. Sorry loves.

god i just finished the ccod finale what the fuck was that. I've genuinely never laughed that hard at anything in my life. my chest physically hurts. I had to pause the episode multiple times. what the fuck
Little Vesper Childers being told that her dad died in a vending machine accident. Years later her mom also died in a vending machine accident. She's left to be raised by her dad who stepped up and pursues her love of animals. Until an accident at the zoo and she's bitten by a bat and becomes half bat half human (a vampire). Vesper tries to live in the caves among the bats but can't keep up with their wasp hunting. Then she comes across Darkness Man and begins her superhero apprenticeship. She eventually comes to terms with the fact she is a vampire only to be turned human again by J of the P and has that hope ripped away by Boyd Douglas. Only then does she learn her bio dad is in fact a bat and she's been half bat half human THIS WHOLE TIME and finds herself in her werebat form.
Character of all time!
