Tony Iommi Hints at Collaboration with Brian May
After decades of being the sole guitar players in their respective bands, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Queen’s Brian May might record together in a dual-guitar setup.
Iommi mentioned the potential teaming up in a wide-ranging interview with Guitar World, which also found the guitarist talking about gear, his playing style, post-Sabbath life and working with rhythm guitarists among other topics.
”I … felt it confused things,” Iommi said of having two guitarists in one band.
”When I worked with other guitarists in those days, I always felt certain things sounded odd or didn’t mesh, so I decided on keeping Sabbath a four-piece.”
But since Black Sabbath disbanded after a final show in February, Iommi has “had great experiences” playing with other guitarists, including Queen’s singular axeman.
”When I jam with Brian May, for example, it works,” he said. “We’re on the same wavelength and we sort of understand and respect each other.”
Although May, who’s been posting on Facebook and Twitter about flying, the English countryside, photography and performing with Queen + Adam Lambert, has been mum on the subject of working with Iommi, the latter said a joint studio project is not outside the realm of possibility.
”Who knows? … We talked about it when (May) came over the house a couple months ago,” said Iommi, who’s been battling lymphoma for several years.
”I’d like to do only things that I really enjoy now, and that would be one of them.”
Speaking of his health, Iommi said his lymphoma is is remission and he’s doing “all right … at the moment.
”I continue to have my regular checkup every six weeks, and it’s a bit easier for me now that I’m not touring,” he said. “The doctors were concerned about all the flying I was doing, because it isn’t good for the blood. But I’m on top of it.”
