200-500-ish years ago (I haven't decided yet) Kai was a warrior alongside Oogway, and they shared a strong brotherly bond.

One day, during an ambush, Kai was unfortunately wounded and Oogway dragged him on a crude stretcher for days, searching for help. They then happened upon a secret village of pandas, who tried to use their knowledge of chi to heal Kai. But his wounds were too great, and death would soon claim him..

Oogway was desperate and horribly distraught, and so the Pandas took a risk and used chi to tie Kai's life force to Oogways. Causing both their pupils to turn white, and their eye colors to change to a vibrant gold. Now that their souls were bonded, Kai could not die as long as Oogway was still alive. His heart was forced to not give out, his lungs were forced to continue breathing, and so despite the wounds and blood loss.. he somehow continued to live...

Weeks went by and Kai was able to recover from his grievous injuries, and come to terms with this new soul bond he had with Oogway. There was fear in not knowing what consequences this might bring.. but he took comfort in knowing that he would face these challenges with his dear brother.

During their stay in the village, Kai and Oogway both became fascinated by the power of chi, and together they were taught by the pandas on how to utilize it. Though Kai never developed an obsession with taking chi. I cant explain how yet, but he didn't <XD

They eventually left the village together. leaving their lives of war and bloodshed behind..

As the years went by, it almost looked like Kai wasn't aging at all.. They figured out that Kai must be aging in sync with Oogway. So if Oogway is 60 in tortoise years, Kai will be also 60 in yak years..

I haven't decided if Kai lived with Oogway at the jade palace for the duration of movie 1 and 2, or if he was off on some adventure. But I do plan to have him "come back" or be around at some point. :0

Their separation during that time wouldn't matter as much since they are able to communicate directly via meditation. So there's no "we'd miss each other too much" factor really..?

Idk, that's kind'a what I cooked up so far for them XD if I come up with a better backstory I can aways change it. The thing I was most excited for was obviously the sick golden eyes that they share. I can see myself drawing a lot of different things about that.. 👀

There's also obviously sooooo much angst and aura potential with the type of scar I could give Kai. I just haven't decided what fatal wound he got yet <XD Although I'm thinking that whatever wound it was caused his speed and/or movement to be limited. This kind'a forced him to look at more "projectile" and ranged seeming weapons. Which is why he switched from a double-sided staff blade to the jade blades on chains.

Having played that new Star Fox so recently, it reaaallly made me wanna re-evaluate that dynamics that the team has. After so many years of mostly fan art, we can fall into typical patterns or even stereotypes for our favorite characters.

For example, I rarely see Falco depicted as deeper than a smug cocky jerk, so I wanted to explore *why* he acts in such a way. And this lil scenario is what I came up with. :D

Plus I get to do Slippy x Falco art.

Falco comes across to me as a person who doesn't put Sentiment and Emotionality high on his list of priorities.

Falco values his competence and skill above everything. He is self-centered, because he can rely on himself to be consistently excellent at what he does.

But feelings, emotions, especially those of other people...that's difficult for him. It's not ideal for him to feel *bad* at something, so he prefers to avoid it.

Slippy meanwhile is pretty outward about his emotions. Passion, excitement, wonder, as well as panic, fear, and appreciation.
