               jasper  couldn’t  help  but  feel  shame  ,  shame  at  his  actions  from  two  years  prior  to  now  that  led  to  —  a  change  of  scenery  .  he’s  haunted  by  the  memory  ,  unable  to  forgive  himself  for  loosing  control  and  almost  hurting  someone  he  cares  about  .  someone  so  important  to  his  brother  .  but  he  would  try  to  make  up  for  that  now  ,  try  his  damnedest  to  protect  the  human  girl  .  bella  .  his  knowledge  of  newborns  ,  his  own  experience  in  an  army  eerily  similar  ,  would  come  in  handy  at  last  .  ❛  are  you  alright  ?  ❜  he  asked  the  dark  haired  girl  ,  his  slick  southern  drawl  melodious  thanks  to  his  .  .  .  disposition  .  ❛  your  emotions  are  all  over  the  place  .  ❜

                 she   doesn’t   have  a  gift  - -  so  to  speak ,  but  she  can  spot  a  clumsy  human  from  a  mile  away .  she  watches  the  girl ,  and  springs  into  action ,  catching  her  arms  &   righting  her .  she  places  her  hands  on  bella’s  shoulders ,  ensuring  that  she  is  steady  before  taking  a  step  back . 

                  ❛   you  should  start ,  amiguita.  from  what  i  gather ,  you  are  precious .   did  something  distract  you  ?  or  is  this  a common  occurrence ?   ❜  

                  he  should  acknowledge  her  statement - -  but  he  doesn’t.  he  can’t ,  because  she  is  blameless  in  his  mind .  it  is  his  mind  that  skews  his  own  perspective ,  tells  him  that  all of  this  is  his  fault .  he  left .  he  provoked  the  volturi .  he  made  her  reckless (  or  at  least ,  he  brings  it  out  in  her ) .   edward  turns  his  face  toward  her  touch ,  his  lips  against  her  wrist .  there  is  a comfort  in  her  pulse  that  he  cannot  deny . 

                        ❛❛  fishing .  ❜❜  the  word  is  a  scoff .  he’d  be  amused  by  the  thought  if  he  knew  it  wasn’t   her  goodbye .    ❛❛  and  what  about  your  mother ?  ❜❜  perhaps  in  reminding  her  what  she  will leave  behind ,  he  can  prolong  the  inevitable .  she  continues  to speak  - -   to  try  and  soothe  him ,  but  he  cannot  help  but  feel  that  gnawing  question.  the  one  he  will  not  give  voice  to - - until :   ❛❛  but what  if  it’s  not ?   ❜❜

                             pause .  and  then ,  ❛❛  what  if  i’m  not  enough ?    ❜❜

                   𝒔𝒉𝒆   𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒏'𝒕   𝒇𝒂𝒖𝒍𝒕   𝒉𝒊𝒎.   how   could   she,   when   he’d   done   everything   he   had   to   protect   her  ?   she   didn’t   agree   with   it,   she   often   put   it   out   of   her   mind   completely,   choosing   to   lock   it   up   in   a   box   that   held   other   repressed   moments   like   a   childhood   lost   to   being   the   responsible   adult   or   all   those   moments   the   difference   between   her   &   her   classmates   had   been   painfully   apparent.   

                   hands   falling   to   her   lap,   twisting   together   at   the   thought   of   her  mother.   she   could   still   picture   her   laugh   lines,   stark   contrast   to   the   childlike   glee   in   her   eyes.   so   unlike   her   own.     ❛   i   saw   her   a   few   months   back.   we   . .   we   can’t   delay   this   anymore.   you   know   that.   we   can   go   see   her,   one   last   time.   ❜     the   thought   of   that   tightened   her   chest,   but   she   knew   it   was   coming.   she   was   prepared.     ❛   she   has   phil.   she’s   happy.   ❜

                 ❛❛  if  i  recall  correctly ,  you  didn’t  lead  aro  directly  to  you.  ❜❜         - - it  was  him .  no  amount  of  consoling  could  change  his  mind .  it  was  his  stupidity that  had  put  them  here .  he  had  stopped  her  clock   before  its  time  had  really ,  truly  run  out . his  jaw  tenses ,  eyes  fixed  on  the  wall  on  the  opposite  side  of  the  room  until  he  hears  it . 

                      ❛❛  i’m going  to  figure  it  out , bella .  - -  we  need  more  time .  i’ll talk  to  carlisle .  he’ll  think  of  something .  ❜❜  she  needs  more  time  -  to  say  goodbye ,  or  to  see  reason .   

                    𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆   𝒊𝒕   𝒘𝒂𝒔.   thoughts   drifting   to   events   that   had   transpired   just   last   year   ——   no.   her   head   shakes,   pushing   at   the   intrusive   memories   &   his   words   stubbornly.   if   she   was   obstinate,   they   were   evenly   matched.

fingers  trap   the   bridge   of   his   nose   between   forefinger   &   thumb.       impossibly , he  feels  (  or  remembers  the  feeling  of  )  an  aching  head .  perhaps  it  his  very  real  aching  heart. 

         ❛❛  alice’s  visions  are   far  from  perfect . i thought - - i  wanted  more  time. the  entirety  of  volterra  within  a  ten  mile  perimiter  indicates  otherwise . ❜❜  a  pause &  then  a  hopeless shrug.  

                ❛❛  this   is   my  fault .  completely .  ❜❜

                    𝒂𝒔   𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉   𝒂𝒔   𝒉𝒆   𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅,   she   despised   seeing   him   like   this.   especially   knowing   she   was   causing   it.   her,   &   where   her   future   was   inevitably   headed.

                    𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔   𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅,   minute   pick   up   in   her   pulse,   a   clear   sign   of   her   increased   stress.   easily   ignored,   if   her   foot   hadn’t   caught   on,   well,   nothing,   sending   her   tumbling   towards   the   ground,   hands   outstretched   to   brace   her   fall.   lucky   for   her,   it   seemed   someone   was   paying   more   attention   than   her.     ❛   sorry   . .   &   thankyou.   i   wasn’t   really   paying   attention.   ❜

                    𝒂   𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏.   eyes   narrowed   impossibly.    ❛  i   thought   alice’s   vision   meant   we   had   more   time.   ❜

                    𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏   𝒍𝒊𝒕   𝒖𝒑   𝒉𝒆𝒓   𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒔.   she   wondered   -    ❛  it’s   nice   to   see   you   out   &   about   again.   did   you   end   up   getting   that   book  ?   ❜

                    𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒙   𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓   𝒕𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈   𝒂𝒕   𝒉𝒆𝒓   𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒎   𝒍𝒊𝒑,   eyebrows   pushed   together.     ❛   i   don’t   know,   em.   i   still   can’t   picture   it.   ❜

                 moments  like  this  only  served  to remind   edward  that  they   were  existing  like  this  on  borrowed time.   a  moment  like  this  -  a  piano  lesson -  a  quiet  conversation   should  have  been  mundane .  mundane  for  everyone  but  them .  for  edward  it  was  a reminder  that  bella’s  human  days  were  limit.  try  as  he  might to  come  up  with  ways  to  subvert  the  volturi’s  demands , bella’s  wishes  had  been  made  entirely  clear .  with  the  volturi  now  monitoring  their  every  move ,  time  was  no  longer  on  his  side.  fear  encroached  from  every  side : fear  of  losing  her , fear  that  she  would  change  and  ultimately  resent  an  existence like  his ,  fear  that  he  was  simply  not  enough .  how  could  he  possibly  be    ,  when  she  was  so  easily  everything ?

lips  curve  upward  (  almost  imperceptibly  )  at  her  recitation ,  and  fall  into  a  grimace  at  her  question . it’s  an  endless cycle  with  them .  they  talk  about  the  same  thing ,  an  unending  circle  of  frustration  on  both  sides .  they  are  both  unbearably  stubborn ,  and  edward  seems  incapable  of conveying  his  hesitations  while  also  expressing  that  there  is  nothing  &  no one  he  could  ever  want  more  than her . that  if  he  could  allow  himself  to  be  selfish ,  HE  WOULD . he  will  not  deny  her  her  choice ,  but  talking  about  the  seemingly  inevitable  only  provokes  his  unease. 

          ❛❛   do  you  want  to  talk  about  it ?  ❜❜  he  challenges , swiftly  adjusting  their  positions  so  that  he  sits  on  the  bench ,  cradling  her  in  his  arms . stalemate .  edward  brushes  his  fingers  through  her  hair ,  catching  a strand  in between his  forefinger  and  thumb .  he  gazes  at  her  for  a moment ,  and  wonders  how  she  can  possibly  think  that  she  is  anything  other  than  the most  beautiful ,  most  spectacular  thing  in  his  whole  world . ❛❛   i’m  okay . - - everything is  just  slightly  too close  for  comfort .    ❜❜  it’s  not  a   lie ,  but  it’s  also  not  at  the  heart  of  his  worry . ❛❛ except  for  you .  ❜❜  he  smiles  gently ,  now ,  pulling  her  gently  to  his  chest ,  lips  pressing against  her  forehead  before  he  rests  his  own  against it -  savoring  in  the  warmth  that  comes  with  everything  that  she  is.

                    𝒊𝒕   𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕,   𝒇𝒐𝒓   𝒂   𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕,   𝒂𝒔   𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉   𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆   𝒔𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅   to   a   complete   standstill,   &   if   even   momentarily   . .   they   were   the   only   ones   moving   in   a   motionless   world.   it   had   been,   for   her,   ambling   along   a   straight   path   (   quite   gracelessly,   she   might   add   )   till   he’d   found   her.   her   personal   miracle,   she   liked   to   believe.   having   him   close,   throwing   out   all   thoughts   of   how   tomorrow   might   fare   in   comparison   to   today,   it   was   almost   simple   to   just   be.   be   them,   be   in   love,   removed   from   the   pressing   decisions   weighing   on   them.   a   decision   she   continually   only   saw   one   option   too,   her   stubborn   mind   refusing   to   consider   the   other.   because   the   other   meant   an   eventual   life   without   edward,   &   that   in   itself   rendered   it   completely   void.

                    eyes   lingered   on   his   lips,   curved   upwards   into   a   smile   she   loved   so   much.   she’d   spent   hours   memorizing   every   dip   &   curve   of   his   face,   &   yet,   every   time   felt   different.   the   passing   of   time,   spending   moments   pressed   against   his   chest   ——   he   still   dazzled   her,   thoughts   scrambled   &   weak.   she’d   almost   forgotten   her   train   of   thought,   light   pools   of   amber   too  easy   to   get   lost   in.   he   was   being   entirely   unfair   but   she   wasn’t   opposed   to   it.     ❛  i   asked   you   first.   ❜     she   insisted,   childlike,   smile   mirroring   his.

                   she   slips   into   his   lap   far   too   easily   ——   arms   winding   around   the   smooth,   cold   skin   that   had   slowly   become   her   favourite.    ❛  you   know   it’s   what   i   want.   please.   ❜     if   he   hadn’t   been   so   set   on   distracting   her   from   her   mission,   she   might’ve   been   capable   of   forming   a   slightly   more   coherent   sentence.   offer   more   words   of   comfort,   repeat   why   it   was   what   she   wanted.   him,   them,   &   an   eternity   that   would   be   all   theirs.   words   she’d   said,   yet   somehow,   the   hesitation   remained.   she   didn’t   want   to   believe   it   was   because   he   may   not   want   that   same   eternity   with   her.   &   so   she   didn’t,   not   in   that   moment,   at   least,   wishing   she   was   stronger   . .   strong   enough   to   use   her   strength   to   pull   him   even   closer.

                    𝒊𝒕   𝒉𝒂𝒅   𝒕𝒐   𝒃𝒆   𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆   𝒔𝒐𝒓𝒕   𝒐𝒇   𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔   𝒕𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒕   𝒐𝒇   𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒆.   it   did,   in   all   honesty,   fit   in   with   her   theory   that   she   was   unquestionably   cursed.   some   days,   she   pushed   that   idea   out   of   her   mind   completely,   especially   when   surrounded   by   a   gentle,   fond   love   that   had   become   her   own.   today,   she   was   sure   of   it.   she   didn’t   blame   her   entirely   for   her   distaste   towards   her,   given   the   spiral   she’d   been   on   when   edward   had   left.   (   the   thought   still   twisted   in   her   gut   like   a   knife.   she   pushed   that   away,   too.   ).   she   didn’t   expect   forgiveness,   but   some   of   her   friends   had   been   more   than   willing   to   hand   it   to   her   on   a   silver   platter,   some   entirely   unsure   while   others   more   than   ready   to   welcome   her   into   their   lives   with   open   hearts   &   arms.   jessica   . .   she   wasn’t   quite   there   yet.

                    for   a   fleeting   moment,   it   felt   like   the   first   day   again.   standing   uncomfortably   in   the   doorway   of   a   classroom,   stomach   twisting   anxiously,   eyeing   the   only   open   seat   in   the   room   with   growing   trepidation.   only,   every   eye   in   the   room   didn’t   follow   her   as   she   seated   herself   down,   books   falling  against   the   wood   with   a   light   thud.

                     she   wasn’t   going   to   pretend   like   a   certain   awkwardness   didn’t   accompany   her   movements,   sitting   still   in   the   stagnant   air   between   them.   no,   she   was   going   to   do   something   slightly   unlike   herself,   instead.   even   if   it   was   only   to   appease   charlie,   to   a   certain   degree.   she   was   more   than   sure   jessica   had   no   interest   in   talking   to   her.        ❛   . .   hey,   jess.   ❜     her   tone   slightly   apologetic,   she   offered   her   a   small   smile.   this   was   going   to   be   a   long   hour.

                    𝒚𝒐𝒖   𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅   𝒂𝒔𝒌   𝒉𝒆𝒓   𝒂   𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏   𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔,   &   she’d   still   say   she’d   been   coerced   into   this.   not   that   it   hadn’t   been   enjoyable.   a   teen   experience   she’d   missed,   like   many   others,   in   her   younger   years.   always   too   particularly   anxious   to   leave   her   mother   alone,   even   if   it   was   just   for   a   night   or   two.   with   charlie,   it   was   different.   he   was   more   like   her,   in   that   respect.   comfortable   in   the   silence,   not   entirely   unaccustomed   to   it   either.   that   thought   alone   tugged   at   her   chest   uncomfortably.

                    the   large   bed   placed   in   edward’s   room   for   her   comfort   felt   entirely   out   of   place,   unfamiliar   &   even   cold,   somehow.   cold   without   him,   she   thought,   pushing   the   thought   from   her   mind   with   an   odd   bit   of   disgust.   it   was   one   night.   one   night,   &   she   was   entirely   restless,   curled   up   on   the   leather   couch   in   lieu   of   the   bed,   lips   set   in   an   impossible   pout.   the   silver   light   from   the   moon   filled   the   room,   glinting   off   every   surface   in   a   way   that   was   almost   haunting.   too   empty.   the   thought   made   her   shudder,   much   like   all   the   others   that   had   been   turning   in   her   head   over   the   past   hour.   

                    throwing   the   gold   covers   off   with   too   much   force,   she   found   herself   wandering   the   house   instead.   tonight,   it   was   only   the   girls,   &   traces   of   that   could   be   felt   in   the   silent   dark.   a   light   emanating   from   the   tv,   hoping   against   hope   it   was   alice   or   esme,   caught   her   attention.   she   knew   she’d   made   a   mistake   when   a   perfect   blonde   head   of   hair   came   into   view.   rosalie’s   distaste   for   her   wasn’t   exactly   a   secret,   &   the   last   thing   she    was   interested   in   doing   was   confirming   whatever   it   was   she   thought   of   her.   she   didn’t   know   what   was   worse,   turning   on   her   heel   &   walking   away   when   rosalie   knew   of   her   presence,   or   trying   to   strike   up   a   conversation.  

                    she   was   probably   going   to   regret   this.     ❛   i’m   sorry   ——   i   didn’t   mean   to   disturb   you.   ❜

                    𝒔𝒉𝒆   𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅   𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒆   𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕   𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌   𝒊𝒏   𝒂𝒏   𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕.   it   wasn’t   at   all   hard,   not   once   you   knew   what   it   was   you   were   looking   at.   to   the   unobservant,   her   bright,   unfocused   pools   of   amber   could   easily   be   written   off   as   slightly   dazed.   lips   parted,   slack.   a   daydream,   perhaps.   something   simply   human.   for   bella,   it   brought   with   it   an   instant   feeling   of   worry,   a   quiet   clenching   in   her   chest.   a   mild   spike   in   anxiety,   punctuated   by   a   quickened   pulse.   

                    the   moment   passed   in   uneasy   silence,   waiting   for   her   friend   to   be   free   of   her   vision   was   almost   agonizing.   she   could   be   patient,   sure,   but   with   all   the   horrors   surrounding   the   small   town  ;   the   danger   that   loomed,   although   momentarily   latent,   hung   above   them   like   a   guillotine   prepared   to   fall   at   any   given   moment.   her   concern   wasn’t   for   her   own   fate.   it   never   had   been.   it   lay   with   those   she   knew   would   do   everything   they   could   to   keep   her   from   danger.   her   family,   for   all   intents   &   purposes.   it   lay   with   those   not   privy   to   the   secrets   she   was,   blissfully   unaware   of   the   rising   danger.   one   yet   without   a   face.   &   that   fact   alone   spiked   her   anxiety   insurmountably.

She did not know where her husband had gone to, but he had made certain she was not left unsupervised. Two of the guards had been given instructions to not let her out of sight, they were meant to stay close to her and be on alert, in case any danger would befall Sulpicia. She doubted there was any danger to speak of in such a small town, it seemed so peaceful and serene. What could possibly happen to her here? Also, there was hardly anyone who knew what she looked like and could recognize her. She had been kept away for many centuries.

“What is that?”, she turned to one of the guards as they stopped in front of a small store. “Is that where they sell bookstores? It is not like a library?”, Sulpicia continued, waiting for a confirmation. “You are expected to pay for any book you want?” What was even the currency they used. It was so silly, she felt like a complete fool, unaware of how the modern world worked. It had changed significantly since she was a mortal, human girl.

                    𝒔𝒉𝒆   𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒏'𝒕   𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆   𝒘𝒉𝒚   𝒔𝒉𝒆'𝒅   𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆   𝒕𝒉𝒆   𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒑.   born   out   of   boredom,   perhaps.   out   of   a   job   she   didn’t   entirely   need   &   with   edward   taking   the   morning   for   a   much   needed   hunting   trip,   she   ended   up   browsing   through   the   shelves   of   the   only   half   decent   bookstore   in   town,   as   though   she   hadn’t   scoured   the   same   shelves   on   countless   occasions   already.   the   least   she   could   do,   she   figures,   was   pick   up   another   copy   of   her   most   loved   piece   of  fiction,   which   currently   lay   in   tatters   on   her   kitchen   table,   the   fragile   binding   destroyed   over   years   of   committing   it   to   her   memory,   it   would   seem.

                    her   fingertips   traced   over   the   titles   absently,   knowing   she   wouldn’t   find   anything   of   interest.   a   cool   gust   of   wind   accompanied   by   the   chime   of   the   bell   that   hung   by   the   door   captured   her   attention,   instead.   of   all   the   times   she’d   been   in   here,   it   remained   unfrequented   by   the   people   of   this   town.   one   look   at   the   arriving   patrons   &   she   could   feel   her   pulse   quicken.   eyes   red,   the   telltale   sign   of   a   vampire   that   preferred   human   blood.   the   first   thought   that   flitted   through   her   mind   was   edward,   her   promise   to   stay   far   from   any   possible   trouble.   he’d   always   claimed   she   was   a   magnet   for   potential   danger.   it   turns   out,   he   wasn’t   entirely   wrong.   the   chances   of   running   into   the   volturi   at   a   bookstore   were   slim   to   none.   so   it   was   only   natural   it   would   happen   to   her.
