jQuery is essentially the backbone of today’s internet, and for the past decade, it has been steadily extending its span and influence. Nearly two-thirds of the World Wide Web’s ten million most popular sites use it.Originally developed in 2006, jQuery is free, open-source, and available to developers and coders all across the globe.
What Exactly is jQuery?
A Library: jQuery is a JavaScript library that can be efficiently used across a wide variety of platforms. But it’s not just any JavaScript library; it is the most widely used Javascript library in history, putting valuable pre-written Javascript at the fingertips of developers worldwide.
A Scripting Tool: jQuery makes client-side HTML scripting infinitely easier than it otherwise would be. It offers a fast, concise, and versatile way to apply JavaScript. So it is a powerful website-building tool with features to help create sleek, dynamic, and interactive sites on a multitude of different platforms.
A Search Tool: jQuery makes navigating and manipulating documents easy, saving time and resources. As an invaluable tool for streamlining the process of website development, jQuery supports all the most popular browsers, including: • Chrome • Firefox • Internet Explorer 9+ • Edge • Safari • Opera
Who Uses jQuery?
jQuery is used by web developers all over the world. It is used by weekend tinkerers, those who code for fun, professional freelance developers, and developers working for both small businesses and major corporations. Because it is fast, efficient, and free, the community of users is remarkably diverse.
How is jQuery Used in a Work Environment?
For those with a basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, jQuery vastly simplifies the task of developing a website. jQuery is user-friendly and easy to learn. It allows those who are non-experts in programming or web design to make beautiful, dynamic, interactive websites—and for these reasons it is has become extremely useful in a wide range of professional settings. Because it is supported by so many different browsers, it is also ideal for situations in which people in the office are accessing online resources from a number of different devices. In fact, jQuery will even render on devices that have JavaScript disabled.
3 Benefits of Using jQuery
It Loads Faster: jQuery reduces the size of CSS and HTML code significantly, meaning the site has shorter load times. It also allows you to only load division elements as they are needed, so not all of them load when the user first arrives on the site.
Search Optimisation: Many search engines, Google included, rank sites based on an algorithm that factors in load time. Because sites using jQuery typically load faster, they earn higher ranks. But jQuery also streamlines sites by allowing you to use unordered list (or UL) tags and to label animations with SEO friendly keywords.
Low Barrier to Entry: Not only is jQuery free, but it is also easy to learn and a cinch to implement.
11 Core Features of jQuery
The core features of the library are as follows:
DOM Element Selection: Allows easy element selection within document object models.
DOM Manipulation: Facilitates efficient and minimally intrusive manipulation of code within document object models. Easy search functions also streamline the process.
Events: Allows developers to code interactive elements, like those that automatically change the size or colour of text when the user hovers over a particular element.
Effects and Animations: Lets developers quickly and easily incorporate animations and special effects.
Ajax: Standing for asynchronous JavaScript and XML, Ajax enables web applications to send and receive information from a server, without altering the display or functioning of the site.
Deferred and **Promise Objects*: Used to control asynchronous processing, these objects specify functions that will occur at a later time.
JSON Parsing: JavaScript Object Notation is a language-independent format for data that is used to facilitate the communication between browsers and servers during asynchronous processing.
Extensibility: jQuery is loaded with features for just about every function you could ever think to need.
Utilities: These are useful for quickly accomplishing many standard programming tasks, such as eliminating excess white space or detecting certain features.
Compatibility: Many of its compatibility tools are natively integrated for modern browsers.
Multi-Browser Support: jQuery supports countless popular browsers.
There is simply no question that **jQuery is the most powerful JavaScript library available today**, and as time goes by, it is only getting stronger. As an open-source, free, and massively popular collection, it represents some of the best that the web has to offer in terms of collaborative tools. So if you, like so many, are interested in learning the basics of jQuery and putting it to use in your own web development projects, coding courses are a great way to push your skills to the next level.
Which image format should I use?
SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics Vector icons are the way of the future, and SVG is the perfect base format. It’s a scalable format meaning that you can change it to any size without quality loss. You can use SVG on the web in many ways: As an image <img src=”/images/home.svg” /> Inline HTML <svg height="100" width="100"> <circle cx="50" cy="50" r="40" stroke="black" stroke-width="3" fill="red" /> </svg> With CSS #vector-image { background-image: url(“/images/home.svg”); } While it SVG is supported by most browsers, it’s has some quirks and may require a bit of getting used to. SVG is based on XML, much like your website markup, which means that it can be manipulated directly by Javascript or CSS. This opens a whole new world of possibilities for the creative front-end developer or tech-savvy designer. Another, and maybe more common, way of working with SVG, is as a base format. This way you can open your SVG in software like Adobe Illustrator, Sketch or Affinity Designer, edit it, scale it, colour it or whatever manipulation you fancy. Afterwards you just export it to your desired format for your project. Compared to PNG, it’s not widely support in apps like Word, Powerpoint and Photoshop. PNG - Portable Network Graphic If you want total compatibility, PNG is the safe choice. Unlike SVG, PNG is a raster format (based on pixels) meaning you have no way of upscaling without losing quality. So you have to download your icons in at least the size you need for your project. That way you can always scale it down when needed. If you are not sure which format to choose, go with PNG. PNG will work in Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop and you can insert them directly into email footer or your website. Compared to formats such as JPG, PNG contains information about transparency. So PNG can easily be added on top of colored background without editing them. Base64 encoded icons (SVG or PNG) You will find both PNG and SVG icons available in base64 format on Iconfinder. Base64 is a way of storing image data making it available without saving the icon as a file. You can copy-paste the base64 encoded icon directly in your CSS or HTML. CSS #vector-image { background-image: url(data:image/svg+xml;base64,PD94bWwgdmVyc2lvbj0iM ... z48L3N2Zz4=); } HTML <img alt="Embedded Image" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PD94bWwgdmVyc2lvbj0iMS4wIiA/Pjwh ... AiLz48L3N2Zz4=" /> You can use this technique to save server lookups and making your website load faster. You can read more in this blog post: http://blog.iconfinder.com/base64-encoding-assets-the-what-when-and-how/ AI - Adobe Illustrator AI format is available for Iconfinder Pro users - AI is the vector format used by Adobe’s Illustrator app. If you are using Photoshop, you can easily drag and drop an AI files into a canvas giving you a vector based object you can use. And of course this format is compatible with Adobe illustrator. CSH - Photoshop Custom Shape CSH format is available for Iconfinder Pro users - CSH files contain custom shapes used by Photoshop. To use a custom shape you have to first open the downloaded file, then use the Custom Shape Tool. Select the shape in the Shapes drop-down list. This is perfect for icons you often use since they will be saved for later use in Photoshop. ICO - Microsoft Windows icon format If you need to use your icon for Windows applications or as a favicon for your website, ICO is the right format. The ICO format can also be used for favicons for a website. More about favicons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon ICNS - The Apple OS icon Format Like the ICO format, ICNS is mostly for very specific purposes. ICNS is an Apple specific format only suitable for Mac OS X documents and apps. So if you need your icon for anything else, choose a different format.

How I Use OneNote for University
Hey, all! I thought I’d share how I use OneNote, for any students who might want to use it for school organization. I have used this since the beginning of my university career and have found a method that works for me, after nearly three years.
I provide templates for what I use as .one files that can be imported into OneNote, and you’re free to use & modify them however you wish.

Customized Syllabus Template: Download
Cornell Outline Template: Download + Outline inspired by How to Use Cornell Cornell Note-Taking Method on OneNote by @strive-for-da-best

As a student with learning disabilities, I found that using a computer, rather than writing everything out, is the best method for me to learn. I type up notes in class so as to not worry about keeping up with a professor, handwriting, or neatness. OneNote is my favourite note-taking application for this, because it’s essentially an upgraded version of Word that’s free and syncs automatically across devices. When my computer crashed, I was still able to access my notes online.
OneNote isn’t all typing. You can use it on a tablet or use a drawing tablet, in my case, to handwrite notes for a more natural feel. A very efficient way of taking notes is to import the lectures slides in OneNote and to write directly on them. I found that very useful in math-heavy courses, such as statistics and chemistry. The equation tool, while nifty, isn’t efficient.
By no means whatsoever is this the only way to use OneNote! In fact, I’d recommend you find a way that works for you, because while this may be highly organized, it takes a bit of set-up time and is tailored specifically to my needs. You can use my example as inspiration, but play around with it! The beauty of OneNote is that it can be used in a variety of different ways.
