Early review of Foo Fighter's new "The Teacher"
The Subtle Manipulation and Gaslighting in "The White Lotus"
Title:
Introduction
Manipulation does not always present itself in grand gestures or elaborate schemes; it can be the small, subtle actions that gradually cause a person to question their sanity. In "The White Lotus," Greg employs such tactics to gaslight Tanya, ultimately leading her into the arms of danger. This essay will explore the intricate web of deception woven by Greg and how his seemingly insignificant actions contribute to Tanya's tragic end.
The Disappearing Macarons
One such example of subtle manipulation occurs when Greg takes the macarons and hides them, leading Tanya to doubt her impulses and desirability. This seemingly minor act sets the stage for Tanya to be more susceptible to the "love bombing" by Quentin and his high-end friends. By breaking Tanya down, Greg makes it easier to manipulate her, much like a dog that is beaten and then offered a bone.
Gaslighting in the "White Lotus"
Greg's actions can be seen as a reference to the famous "Gaslight" movie, where manipulation and gaslighting are central themes. In the show, Greg sets Tanya up to believe she is mentally unstable, making her more vulnerable and easier to control. This also lays the groundwork for a potential suicide narrative if Tanya were to meet an untimely demise.
The Night with Niccolo and the Aftermath
Unbeknownst to Tanya, she is being set up for disaster as she spends a night with Niccolo, who was introduced to her by Quentin. As they share an intimate moment, a red light on the frame suggests that they are being recorded and watched. Tanya wakes up the next day to find Portia missing and herself in a precarious situation.
Connecting the Dots
Tanya's suspicions are aroused when she sees a photograph of young Greg and Quentin together. However, she is too drugged to process it at the time. It is only after receiving a phone call from Portia that Tanya finally realizes the danger she is in. She deduces that Greg is plotting to murder her and inherit her fortune.
In "The White Lotus," Tanya becomes a victim of subtle manipulation and gaslighting by both Greg and Quentin. This essay will explore the tactics employed by the two characters to deceive and control Tanya and the subsequent effects on her mental health as she questions her own sanity.
Greg's Subtle Manipulation
Greg's gaslighting of Tanya begins with seemingly insignificant acts, such as hiding macarons to make her doubt her impulses and desirability. These actions undermine her confidence and self-esteem, making her more susceptible to the love bombing and manipulation by Quentin and his friends. Greg's tactics mirror the classic gaslighting scenario depicted in the movie "Gaslight," as he sets the stage for Tanya to believe she is mentally unstable.
Quentin's Gaslighting Tactics
Quentin adds another layer of deception by taking advantage of Tanya's vulnerability. He introduces her to Niccolo, knowing that their intimate encounter would be recorded and watched. This manipulative act further pushes Tanya to question her own judgment and actions, leaving her feeling more disoriented and helpless.
Tanya's Symptoms of Gaslighting Abuse
As a result of the gaslighting by Greg and Quentin, Tanya displays several symptoms of suffering from gaslighting abuse. These include:
Self-doubt: Tanya questions her own memory and judgment, as evidenced by her confusion regarding the missing macarons and her hesitance to trust her instincts when she sees the photograph of young Greg and Quentin together.
Anxiety: The constant manipulation leads Tanya to feel anxious and frantic, especially when she realizes she is in danger and believes that Greg is plotting to murder her.
Isolation: Tanya becomes more isolated as she loses trust in herself and those around her, including her assistant Portia. This isolation makes her more vulnerable to the schemes of Greg and Quentin.
Desperation for validation and love: Tanya's low self-esteem and self-doubt make her crave validation and affection, causing her to fall for the love bombing tactics of Quentin and his friends.
The Tragic Finale
In a state of panic, Tanya takes matters into her own hands, shooting Niccolo, Quentin, and their associates. Despite her bravery in this moment, she ultimately meets a tragic and comical end as she tries to escape the yacht, hitting her head on a rod and falling into the water.
Conclusion
In "The White Lotus," the gaslighting of Tanya by Greg and Quentin serves as a cautionary tale about the insidious nature of manipulation and its detrimental effects on a person's mental health. Tanya's experience highlights the importance of recognizing gaslighting tactics and trusting one's own instincts to avoid falling victim to such abuse.
Greg's manipulation of Tanya in "The White Lotus" exemplifies the subtle and insidious nature of gaslighting. His actions, such as hiding the macarons and making Tanya doubt her own memory, pave the way for the disastrous events that unfold. Ultimately, it is Tanya's vulnerability and lack of self-awareness that lead her to her tragic end, serving as a cautionary tale about the dangers of manipulation and the importance of trusting one's own instincts.
The Twin Peaks allusions in GG have been well documented, but how about the Gonchorov homages starting at the beginning of the first season? Lorelai oversleeps on Rory's first day, which leads her to drive Rory to Chilton in a bizarre, mismatched outfit.
When buying coffee from Luke later in the day, Lorelai complains that the fuzzy blue alarm clock that she set the night before "didn't purr on time."
But despite knowing that the alarm clock doesn't work, it can be seen in her room throughout the ENTIRE first season, stopped on the very moment of Gonch's passing.
Next we will look at Rory and Paris and the nod to Katya and Sofia in three key episodes

Goncharov (1973) - deleted, alternative scene of Katya‘s „What is marriage but a way to escape the names of our fathers?“

Goncharov + Dark Side of the Moon?
Yo so I was rewatching Goncharov sort of in the background, and decided just on a whim to put on dark side of the moon, and it’s insane how well it lines up with the movie. So, not to get into all of it, but basically, breathe lines up perfectly with Goncharov and Katya fleeing the crumbling soviet union, and that morose theme that comes along with it. Money comes on, I’m not joking, exactly when Andrey starts counting the money Goncharov brings him. The boat scene? You better believe that’s right over Speak to me and that spooky heartbeat. I honestly didn’t believe it was like a purposeful thing though, until i got to the dance floor scene, and when the two of them share the kiss, it’s that first high in Brain damage, the “see you on the dark side of the moon”. There’s so much more I could add onto this, but I’ll leave it there for now

Another leaked Goncharov script, same scene as previous, looks to be the same scene but a revised final version, a shooting script.
