Personal headcanon/hot take(?)
I like to think of the music in video games as being diagetic, as in, the characters are also hearing the music. Now, sometimes this makes sense in story, like if you asked most people if they thought there was a band offscreen playing the Guardia Millennial Fair theme during Chrono Trigger, they’d probably be like “yeah I could see that”. Or in Deltarune, in the Field Of Hopes And Dreams, it’s the only area in the game (note I have not played chapter 5 yet, been busy, so I don’t know if this does come up again) that actually displays the name of the track on screen. I bet a fair amount of people would be like “yeah they can hear that.” But I mean everything.
I basically headcanon every area in a video game character’s world has a theme inherent to it, and it basically just exists in their brain any time they walk into a building or something. They don’t hear it coming from any specific place, it’s just a thing that happens, every place has music. Every person has music too! So when Simon Belmont enters the first area of Dracula’s Castle, ironically, Vampire Killer is inherent to that area. If you were to be teleported from where you are irl to a room in that section of the game, until you left it, Vampire Killer would play on repeat in your head. In the same vein, if you were to talk to Noelle, Girl Next Door would play in your head until the conversation was over.
This also implies a theme for every building and area in the world that we don’t see.
I hope this was intelligible lol
