she was in a handful of other homes, yes. i’d guess she cycled through about six or seven of them before the barnettes adopted her. the adults would often find her unsettling with her wide dark eyes and near complete silence, she was an easy target for bullies, and there were always weird incidents that forced her to move places sooner or later.

a notable one involved a radiator catching fire and another child who swore it was livvy’s fault and that she did it with scary supernatural powers. no one was hurt and it was determined to be “electrical issues” that the parents were at fault of, but still.

in one of her last placements she meets a boy that’s as sharp and bright as the knives he likes to play with and he becomes her brother even before she discovers that he’s like her in a way. elliot is entrusted with her words and safety and she becomes his moral compass and closest confidant and they become each other’s home and family.
