Something that keeps bugging me about Kasumi’s Phantom Thief outfit is just how similar it looks to the protagonist’s. I brushed it off as lazy design at first, but looking into it further makes me feel like I might be on to something.

The colors of their outfits are identical, unlike the rest of the PTs who all have very distinctively different designs and color schemes. Hell, Kasumi even has the same long coat and golden buttons as Joker.

What’s especially bugging me is their gloves having the same color. In an interview found in the Persona 5 artbook Soejima stated the following about the gloves:

So the color of the gloves is kind of a big deal, and unique to every Phantom Thief. That is, besides Joker and Kasumi sharing the same very flashy red.

Another thing I have noticed is how they wear their school uniforms. The other Phantom Thieves all add their unique twist to their uniforms, for example Makoto wears a different shirt & vest, Ann wears a different hoodie and shortens her skirt, Yusuke & Ryuji wear different shirts as well… 

And then there are Joker and Kasumi, wearing their uniforms without any personal touches at all.

So, where does this leave us? 

The design of those two looking so similar has to be intentional - there is no other explanation. In addition Kasumi also transfered to Shujin at the same time as Joker.. which is suspicious imo

My best guess would be that Kasumi was meant to be a female protagonist after all and it got changed way later in development - at a point too late to change her design.

Other than that? I have no idea to be honest. A lost sister maybe? But they don’t really look similar beyond their outfits.
