đ â  â â  â âââââââââââ on some levels it felt like brady had set this up. all evening heâd been teetering between serving as a buffer between bowie and himself, and trailing after indie. at some point throughout the night amari had noticed heâd stopped checking in on them completely. not long after that his not-so-subtle disappearing act had also been detected. he didnât have enough evidence to prove his theory, but even if he did he wouldnât have minded. he actually fell into conversation relatively easy; even with the nerves that shot through him every time he maintained eye contact for a minute too long. amari may have been socially inept, but he wasnât an idiot. he could easily feel how captivating of a person bowie was. she was the kind of person you wanted to impress, no matter how you did or the connection you were looking to have with her.
music had been the obvious navigator that led the conversation, and heâd be lying if he said it didnât feel good to talk about the art with another artist. it was nice not to have to focus on the ways in which he failed, but instead be able to talk about what had spurned his love for it in the first place. he could share his favorite artists, and the techniques he found to be the most effective while learning the same things about her. even long after the party died down and the two of them found themselves moving out from the building and into the cold he found he didnât want the conversation to end. stepping on a very dangerous and unsteady limb, heâd decided to ask her to come back to the b&b with him. not that that would have gone as smoothly as it sounded.
â i really just realized how sketchy that sounded. umâŚââ itâs not some randomâs bed & breakfast, thatâs not a line to get you to some room. itâs my establishment, well ââ my parentsâ ââ â amari stopped himself again, head canting to the side as he realized that didnât sound much better than what heâd previously said. â i donât want to get you in some random hotel room, is basically what iâm saying. iâd just like to keep talking to you, and i donât go out very much â â he clarified, though he was sure she could tell. â so i donât know of any open places we could go to do that, but we could just sit in the kitchen or the garden at the b&b, and i can make us some hot chocolate to both apologize for the state i put this interaction in and also to maybe warm us up a bit. from the cold. if you want. if youâre interested. itâs not a far walk from here actually. not a weirdo, or a murderer. brady can vouch for me. â it was his attempt at shifting the conversation to a much lighter tone. he hoped it worked.
normally bowie might have been cursing someone for leaving her to do small talk with someone, it wasnât exactly something she enjoyed and she avoided it whenever it was possible. she usually would find the opportunity to leave the conversation, there were a few methods but there were times where she would pretend to no longer hear the person anymore over the music. but tonight it hadnât even crossed her mind, when the music did drown his voice out from time to time she found herself leaning in closer to hear him better, eyes lingering on his lips now and again (it could have easily been played off as reading his lips but she had noticed the broken eye contact whenever their eyes met for a little too long and she just couldnât help herself) . it seemed as though brady and indie had this pull to one another whenever they were around each other, there was no denying it from the outside looking in, so it really wasnât surprising when bowie had eventually noticed their departure.Â
by the time bowie had even noticed the two had disappeared she was far too engrossed in the topic, music was something that she could have rambled about for as long as possible if someone was willing to listen. it wasnât entirely one sided either, it was even better when someone shared the same passion that she did. amari radiated this warmth, it was as if he had been dipped in sunlight and it would leave bowie wondering when they parted if people felt the opposite when it came to her. he was soft edged and she felt jagged in comparison. it was only when the party was dying down, numbers began to dwindle and the music soon being turned off had been her queue to leave. she stepped out onto the street, arms immediately crossing against her chest as some sort of warmth from the bitter cold air. she was going to have to figure out the best way to get back to brooklyn, she had gotten the ferry out to staten island earlier tonight and she was sure without even checking the time that she had missed the last ferry back home to brooklyn.
she was fishing her phone out of her pocket when amariâs voice pulled her attention back to him. only really registering his invitation once he had went into a panicked explanation. âand here i thought you were just trying to support some local businessâ she knew the invitation had not been meant in that way, it probably wouldnât have even crossed her mind. it was in her nature to tease, he was so easily flustered that once again she just couldnât help herself. she lets out a small laugh at the mention of brady being able to vouch for him âwell if brady sayâs you arenât a weirdo or murderer then heâs gotta be rightâ she could feel the cold beginning to nip at her cheeks and nose âand hot chocolate does sound kinda goodâ she admits, head tipping back to look up to the sky momentarily âand if you wanna forget this whole thing even happened you could throw in some pancakes or somethingâ she joked âi donât make the rulesâ she shrugged her shoulders.
