"...So. Vampires. That's a thing, huh?" It'd been a few days since the Klaus incident, and Max had been pondering how best to pose her questions. Apparently, she'd decided blurting out that was the best way to go about asking him.

Damon had been waiting for the questions he just hadn’t expected hers to arrive quite that casually. His brows lifted, glass pausing halfway to his mouth before he took the drink anyway. “That’s one way to put it.” He set the bourbon down and looked at her for a moment, the corner of his mouth twitching. “Yes. Vampires are a thing. Unfortunately, so are Klaus shaped headaches, but I’m guessing you figured that part out.”
He could have left it there. Let her ask whatever she wanted, feed her the answers one at a time and keep the attention firmly on the supernatural disaster he’d conveniently neglected to mention. Except Klaus had dragged something else into the open too, and Damon had been sitting on his own questions for days. Questions he’d deliberately kept to himself while everything was still too fresh, because interrogating Max immediately after Klaus had gotten his hands on her seemed slightly less charming than usual.
Damon folded his arms over his chest, studying her. “Since we’re apparently doing the whole secrets and revelations portion of our relationship...” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Visions?” There was no accusation in the word at first, mostly curiosity with an edge of disbelief. He’d replayed what little he knew more times than he cared to admit, trying to fit it into every interaction they’d had before Klaus. Now there were moments that looked different in hindsight. He wasn’t going to start deciding what they meant for her, but he had questions. A lot of them.
“How long has that been happening?” Damon asked, quieter now. “And what exactly does vision mean? Future? Past? Random supernatural cable package with absolutely terrible reception?” The joke landed lightly, but his attention never left her. “Do they just happen? Can you tell when one’s coming?” His jaw tightened briefly before he added the question that had been bothering him most. “And why didn’t you tell me?”
Damon pushed away from the table, but he didn’t crowd her. He just moved a little closer, hands dropping loosely to his sides. “I’m not exactly standing here with the moral high ground.” He gestured vaguely at himself. “I left out the part where I drink blood and occasionally have unfortunate fang related malfunctions.” His mouth pulled faintly to one side before the amusement disappeared again. “But this is different.” He hesitated, then corrected himself before she could take it the wrong way. “No. Not different. That’s not what I mean.” Damon rubbed his thumb along his jaw, irritated at himself now. “I mean Klaus knew. Or knew enough to come after you because of it. Which means whatever this is, it can put a target on you.”
That was the part he couldn’t make casual. His eyes stayed fixed on hers, something sharper flickering beneath the usual composure. “So yeah, I want to know why you never told me. Not because you owed me some dramatic confession. You didn’t.” A pause. “But because apparently you’ve been carrying around your own supernatural bombshell while I was busy making sure you thought I was just an unusually charming asshole.”
The smirk surfaced for half a second before Damon’s expression softened again. “You get to ask your vampire questions.” He reached for his glass, though he didn’t drink from it this time. “I get to ask about the visions.” His gaze settled back on her. “Seems fair.”
