"Nonsense." If there was one thing Venera knew, it was that a Bennett witch deserved to be cared for. The world had spent centuries treating Bennett witches as tools, people to be ordered around, relied upon, and discarded the moment their sacrifices had served everyone else's needs. Venera knew better than that. She had seen it happen too many times throughout history.
It had taken her a long time to find Bonnie, and even longer for Bonnie to begin trusting her. Not that Venera had been entirely honest herself. Some truths required time. If it were up to her, Bonnie would one day stand beside her as part of her coven, surrounded by witches who would value her rather than use her. But that was a conversation for another day.
For now, she would settle for being there whenever Bonnie needed her. Or whenever Bonnie stubbornly refused to ask for help.
"I am not allowing you to perform this spell by yourself," Venera said firmly, though her voice remained warm. "It is far too dangerous for one witch." She stepped closer, her gaze lingering on Bonnie for a moment longer than necessary.
"Yes, I know you are capable. I know you are strong. You remind me very much of Qetsiyah in that regard." A faint smile crossed her lips. "Though I suspect you're far more pleasant company." Her expression softened. "But strength is not the issue. I am not willing to risk you getting hurt simply because you insist on carrying every burden alone." Venera reached out and gently brushed an invisible speck of dust from Bonnie's shoulder, her hand lingering briefly before falling away. "Two witches are better than one, especially when both happen to be exceptionally powerful." There was something almost affectionate in the way she looked at her then, as though the thought of Bonnie collapsing after a spell was far more troubling to her than she wished to admit.
"So how about this?" she continued. "You allow me to help. We perform the spell together, safely, and once we're done, we go and find something to eat." A teasing smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Something you actually enjoy for once, instead of throwing yourself into yet another life-threatening act of heroism." Her eyes softened.
"You spend so much time taking care of everyone else, Bonnie. Perhaps, just this once, you could allow someone to take care of you."
