vampirism has never been half as glamorous as katherine fought so hard to make them believe. it's a pair of shackles locked into place around his wrists before he'd ever even realized what was truly happening. how it could change someone for the worse. this isn't power, it's weakness. it's having your life wrung out of human connection and stretched out into a long, cold eternity ahead of you, suddenly devoid of any real meaning. driven only by an endless loop of thirst, of the deaths of virtually everyone else around you, of addiction so monstrous it distorts your very soul. if you still even possess one at the end of the day.
naturally, damon doesn't get it. why would he? where stefan lost his soul unwillingly, where it was stripped from him somewhere along the way, damon simply traded his in the first chance he got. to show for it? a good time. all the time. and the very worst of it is that a small part of stefan's still hopeless enough to want to dig his fingers into damon's chest, find the heart that used to care, pull it out. if only just to prove to them both that it's still in there.
not right now, though. lately he's facing a little worse than the empty space where his brother used to be.
he slows to a stop near where damon sits. flicks a glance at the journal in his hands, if only to be certain that damon isn't reading his again. that particular ploy for attention is getting old. "impressive. that means you're noticing more than just yourself today." which he's self aware enough to understand is confirming exactly what damon just said, but he can't bother with the denial today. another few steps guide him to the bottle on the end table, where he can at least pour himself a drink that might take the edge off what scratches, scratches, scratches at the back of his throat, a familiar dog waiting to be let back inside. "find anything?"
"Stefan strikes back, alert the media." Damon murmured. "Contrary to your belief, Stefan, I notice a lot of things. I just don't feel the constant need to monologue them--unlike our ancestors." he sighed, flipping the journal closed and plopping it on the desk. "Which has been a monumental waste of my afternoon. The most annoying part is I don't even think Richard knows what he is..." He sighed.
Damon mulled over that for a moment, considering other paths of information. Ric was a hunter and his wife was obsessed with researching vampires and the supernatural in Mystic Falls, it was very possible she might have discovered something about the Lockwoods. "I think we should talk to Ric, Isobel was a total freak for all of this and her work might have a lead."
like a fun new party trick, she knows there's something off in the room before they even reveal themselves. it's a tickle in her senses, a disembodied whisper in the back of her mind that she isn't truly alone. "—are you going to lurk all day, or do you want to talk?"
"If I wanted to lurk, I'd send a crow." Damon stepped out to where he was visible. He was admittedly testing her a little, seeing just how strong that intuition had gotten. If for nothing but mere curiosity on his end. "You and Emily have a lot more in common than just blood and magic, you know."
@bourbonblooded
She genuinely hadn't meant to stare - or maybe she had meant to look for a moment and then mind her own business - but she found herself counting each glass of bourbon the other took down. "Okay, I feel like I need to be the responsible one but aren't you feeling anything?" she finally asked, a genuine look of concern written on her features
Damon glanced over at the woman as he refilled his glass with a bottle the bartender had left in front of him. "I haven't felt anything in over a century." he said and then paused to study her, realizing she looked new to town. Without asking, Damon reached over the bar and plucked a fresh glass from the stack. He poured bourbon a quarter of the way and slid the drink over with the back of his fingers, glass scraping the top of the bar. "Try it."
@guiltfed
When Damon was human he thought vampirism was the key to everything. In a lot of ways, he hadn't been entirely wrong. Strength, power, influence over others, and most seductive of all: walking free of the chains that bound the rest of humanity. He couldn’t remember the last time he labored for money, he didn't answer to any government, he killed whoever he wanted when he wanted, and none of these things were of any consequence to him. Ever.
But, as it turns out, immortality is a bigger bitch than hindsight. There were just some things even eternity can't outrun. Rather, turned your ghosts into solid stone, built to last the sands of time for as long as your body did. Every where he stepped, all of Damon’s faults and fears lingered in his shadow, nibbling little chunks out of him like open mouthed fish at the edge of a creek. The thing is, Damon already hated himself in his human life. His father had been very skilled at making him believe there was something inherently wrong with him, so, for Damon--the transition into a monster was never much of a fall from grace at all. Rather, slipping into a form that finally fit.
As usual, Damon and Stefan could not have been more opposite in this.
Where Damon felt at home with a sharp set of teeth and the monster in the mirror, his brother was desperate to file them off: enough to crucify and bleed himself dry, if only someone would tell him he was good. Whatever that word means. Damon had spent years chewing on it. He knew he wasn’t good, not in the sense that most people meant it, but he knew this was about choices. Sometimes he chose to make the right ones, but most of the time he didn’t see any point in bothering—especially when there was often no good deed gone unpunished. Who was he trying to prove himself to anyway? An invisible judge, jury, and executioner ? God ? please. If the bible had any truth to it there would be a vampire out there old enough to tell it. And, even then, he really wasn’t sure he’d care.
He supposed that was what was so annoying about Stefan’s martyrdom, running to confess each and every sin. There was no hell to go to, so he would build one right here on earth to blister in for all of eternity. And that would have been fine, except he wanted Damon to take his hand and stand atop the pyre with him, only to condemned him when he didn’t. Damon didn’t know what it was about Stefan that made him a ripper, and he wouldn’t pretend to understand the kind of bloodlust he struggled with, but he would not hate himself further just to prove he was worthy being loved.
If Stefan wanted to resent him for that, fine. They had plenty of other reasons to hate each other, far be it from Damon to pick and choose which ones made the list now.
Sitting in the living room, Damon was reading an old Gilbert journal. Whatever went down with the Gilbert watch and the Lockwood's left him with a lot of questions regarding the entire bloodline. He wanted to see if there were any buried secrets he missed over the years. As the fire crackled, the scent of it mingled with his lit cigar, wafting over the room. The sound of Stefans footsteps echoed down the hall well before he emerged in the entryway.
"Ugh." Damon groaned softly as he entered his peripheral. With out looking up from the journal, he turned the page and said, "I can feel you brooding."

Damon never once needed a reason to tear through small towns like a hurricane, but if there was one thing that would rocket him from a category one to five: it was screwing him over.
And the thing about damon was he didn't get angry, he just got even.
If Stefan really thought he could vervain him, steal his daylight ring and lock him in the bottom of the boarding house to dry rot for the rest of time, he was in for a bloody awakening. Before, Damon had only been toying with the humans. Now, he was just gonna start killing them. And the sick irony of it all was Damon didn't even come to town for Stefan or Elena. He came for Katherine and the tomb, but then he found a girl wearing her face and his little brother hanging on her arm trying to keep it a secret.
Stefan had been naive to think he could relive 1864 all over again and Damon wouldn't make him suffer. He didn't get to be the reason Katherine was locked in the tomb and happily after with her human copy. And he sure as hell didn't get ride around on a high horse playing white knight while he condemned Damon to a cell when they both knew damn well he had a stable full of bodies of his own. He wondered if Elena would have invited him in so readily if she knew the real reason Stefan stuck to eating squirrels.
By the time the sun was down Damon had already devised a plan and killed six people. The problem was the sun would be coming back up and there were an infinite number of places Stefan could have hidden his ring. So, in order to get it back, he needed leverage. He hadn't expected leverage to find him in the form of Vicki Donovan, but Damon wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
He left the rest of Vicki's friends burning with their bonfire and took Vicki's unconscious body back to the boarding house where he tossed her on the couch. He cracked open a new bottle of bourbon, lit a fresh cigar and called Stefan. To no ones surprise, it went to voicemail for the fourth time.
"My nonexistent patience is wearing very thin, Stefan. Bring me my ring or I'm gonna start killing Elenas friends one by one and dropping them on her doorstep--starting with Vicki Donovan. And if Matt's junkie little sister isn't enough to quite make the cut I hear Carolines sorority is throwing a party on campus. It'll be like a buffet." Click.
Damon tossed his phone and glanced at the half dead girl on the couch. He took a swig of bourbon and reached out to tilt her face, angling her jaw to reveal the gaping bite at her neck. He let out a low, amused, whistle.
"Gotcha good, didn't I?" he muttered, dropping his hand.
"Well you're not gonna be any fun today..." he sighed, but as he said it a terrible thought crawled in. "--unless..?"
His gums pulsed as his fangs extended and Damon bit into his own wrist. He dragged it over to her lips and held it there, waiting for the blood to elicit a response.
"rise and shine, sleepy head. we've got a town to terrorize."

I am a creature in transition and that is the most human thing of all
Being sized up had never been a strange occurrence. She had been measured and chewed on many times. Too gristly, too soft. But tenderness was something she hadn’t left behind. Tenderness was something she had hidden inside her memories ⸻ winter tended to bring it out. Those who pretended to be someone they weren’t. Like the Salvatore in front of her, not necessarily out of place in the crowd. Charming and clothed well, suave like an emperor. Still, she bristles. Uncertain and distrustful. “I haven’t seen you around campus.” An innocent comment, potentially, but Bonnie watches him closely for any glimpse of a peeled open mask. “Where’d you two move from, again? Elena never mentioned it.”
"you wont." damon replied. "stefan's the academic one -- i prefer my library." besides, he wouldn't be caught dead in a ten mile radius of a college campus unless he was after an easy meal. and even then, there were plenty of less headache inducing ways to sink his teeth into someones neck without having to tolerate frat boys, shitty booze, and their even shittier taste in music. at her question, damon tiled his head a little. the movement was innocent if you didn't know any better, but he was analyzing every twitch of her face. witches were incredibly intuitive but the young ones were rarely very good at hiding the moment they caught his scent. "i'm sure stefan hasn't said much for her to tell." damon went on. "our fathers family is originally from mystic falls, but stefan and I bounced around after our parents died. zach is our only living relative." he shrugged. a perfect non answer and a hidden joke just for him.
Dark and deep. That's the first thing Elena noticed. Eyes: dark and deep. One moment her offhand question was being tossed into the air, the next it was being answered by someone with a gaze so sharp it was suddenly tempting to check a reflective surface to see if she had been pierced. While it would be near impossible to know everyone in Mystic Falls, some days it felt like Elena did. The monotony of familiar faces wasn't often broken up. It had been the day Elena had first met Stefan, and it was again as the clock ticked from 11:00 to 11:01 pm on New Year's Eve.
It took a moment for Elena to find her voice. She didn't know why she felt unsettled, but the feeling was there all the same. Her own eyes— always round, always a little big, but never that sharp— looked down towards her mug as she shoved her thoughts back into the neat cubes that composed her mind. "And, just to be clear, I'm supposed to stay awake that entire time?" She asked, looking back up with a smile.
Good, Elena. Good. Jokes are good.
At his introduction, there was a brief moment where Elena's surprise shown through. This was Damon? Passing by someone and meeting them in an intimate setting was proving to be quite different experiences. There were some places where Elena could imagine she saw a similarity to Stefan, resting in the sharpness of their jaws or the set of their brows. There was also something incredibly different, though, and that distinction felt incredibly important. Elena just couldn't put her finger on what it was yet.
"Damon? Hi." Elena extended a hand, the gesture feeling strangely formal. "I'd say that Stefan told me a lot about you, but he hasn't told me a lot about anything yet. Not that he has to," she quickly tacked on at the end. "I'm Elena. Elena Gilbert."
the longer damon looked at elena the more the image of katherine started to blur. not in the sense that you forget what someone looks like, more so in the way your mind preserves a place and then once you're standing in front the real thing it's slightly askew. maybe the couch isn't really that close to the wall or the fireplace is made of red brick while you could have sworn it was more brown-- and was the hallway always this narrow?
elenas face was a glaring flash over katherines and suddenly he was trying to find her calculating eyes in the girl before him, only to be annoyed when he couldn't. katherine seemed to exist and disappear through her like a mirage and he couldn't tell if the ache settling between each one of his ribs was grief or rage. it really didn't matter -- both made him destructive.
damon glanced at her outstretched hand and briefly wondered if she would have offered it so freely knowing she was sticking it in a tigers den with no promise of getting it back. he hadn't thought about touching her with any sort of softness-- even something as benign as a handshake. ( sinking his teeth into her? that he had considered.) it wasn't really that he wanted to hurt her, but rather something, and he was going to galvanize himself trying to figure out what her existence made him feel. suddenly damon was extending his own hand, half expecting her to ripple into thin air upon contact, like a reflection breaking on water. except she didn't. instead she was both soft and solid. warm. wholly human. he wondered how long it would take until every time she opened her mouth he stopped expecting katherine to unhinge her jaw and come crawling out. "Well, Stefan's not one to brag." he flashed a practiced smirk and pulled his hand back, immediately picking up his bourbon because he needed the feeling of her skin to go away. ( which one of them was the danger, again ? ) "I'm just glad to see stefan's dating again." he sipped his drink. "that last one was..." damon trailed off and shook his head a little. "--well, we probably shouldn't go there."

closed starter for @bourbonblooded (Damon)
Whatever they'd going on, Caroline was into it. She couldn't tell right from wrong, didn't really care about the consequences, but rather about what's in store for her. To be seen, to be admired, she'd set her sights on Damon Salvatore of all people, the older brother of the Stefan Salvatore. So when she actually spotted him sitting at the Mystic Grill, Bourbon in hand, Caroline didn't hesitate to join him. "Damon, hey" she was all smiles and giggles, clearly smitten. "So, daydrinking... rough day?" she sat down, unprompted, "I can keep you company."
his initial dismissiveness was hardly her fault. it wasn't that she was dull, or annoying, or unattractive --or any of the other decidedly awful reasons most men were terrible to women. under different circumstances, in another town -- maybe if she had a different family, they could have had some authentic fun. of course, it still wouldn't have ended well but she might have at least walked away. a better man would have left her alone beyond what was necessary, but a better man damon was not ( hardly a man at all these days ) and since it was clear caroline had the keys to several small town kingdoms she was gaining the worst kind of his attention: a need, not quite a like. and somewhere in the back of his mind she was starting to look like a mirror, which would only make him all the more cruel. because, really, there was no one damon loathed more than himself.
he finished his drink and set the empty glass on the bar. "bad century." he murmured, tapping the rim to flag the bartender over for a refill.
Damon turned to Caroline, who had surprisingly caught him in a less sour mood. or maybe he was just drunk...and hungry. certainly, he was bored, which was equally dangerous and liable to make him twice as reckless.
"Caroline Forbes." he gave her a charming smile. "You know, I was just thinking about you." not exactly a lie, but definitely not in the way she would have liked. he was wondering if the vervain was out of her system yet.
