liam, going through some rough times in his own life, already playing vax as reckless and purposeless and so ready to give his life for his companions at any moment, latching onto the absolute perfect opportunity to kill off his character in order to bring his sister back from death (possibly with the intention of taking a bit of a personal break from critical role)

and matthew mercer using that opportunity to instead tell him (as the raven queen to vax) over the course of the rest of the campaign that, actually, he is in fact important, and special, and needed. and even though liam was initially upset with how that moment went down because he had no idea if he or vax could handle whatever mantle he’d just been given, it grew to become such a core theme for his character and their entire game. a massive ripple effect born from those emotions like droplets in a pond
