The Story Behind BEASTIE BOYS' "Sabotage"

When BEASTIE BOYS released "Sabotage" in 1994, it surprised almost everyone.

Known primarily for blending hip-hop with rock, the group took a different approach by creating one of the heaviest songs of their career. Built around ADAM "MCA" YAUCH's driving bass line, ADAM "AD-ROCK" HOROVITZ's distorted guitar, and MIKE D's pounding drums, "Sabotage" became an instant alternative-rock favorite.

The song appeared on the album "Ill Communication," which showcased the band's ability to move effortlessly between rap, punk, funk, jazz, and instrumental rock.

Lyrically, "Sabotage" isn't about a specific event. The song captures feelings of frustration, suspicion, and losing control, with the vocals delivered in an aggressive, almost shouted style that matched the intensity of the music.

While the song was a hit on rock radio, its music video became just as legendary.

Directed by SPIKE JONZE, the video parodied 1970s police and detective television shows. The members of Beastie Boys played fictional undercover detectives complete with fake mustaches, oversized sunglasses, wigs, and exaggerated car chases. Filmed to resemble a vintage TV series, the video quickly became one of MTV's most memorable clips of the 1990s.

Although it lost Video of the Year at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards to TLC's "Waterfalls," "Sabotage" has since become widely regarded as one of the greatest music videos ever made and is frequently included on critics' lists of the best videos of all time.

More than 30 years later, "Sabotage" remains one of Beastie Boys' signature songs.
