Narcoleptic little Simon that worries Grace so much cause why is he always so tired?? He’s so young, he shouldn’t be this tired?? Armando can never find anything wrong. There is nothing wrong from the looks of it.

Simon always nodding off next to him because he feels safe enough to. Waiting around for results of some science experiment Grace and Rocky are doing on the tuamoeba and his head is on crossed arms, napping on the table.

for one, it recontextualizes every shitty thing she did in the show. her misogyny was an extension of her self hatred and denial. she treated the other women in the circus horribly because she didn't want to admit that she wanted to be one. she wasn't a typical misogynistic man, she was a deeply troubled trans woman who was jealous of "real" women (all women are real women, I'm just trying to illustrate how Jax thought about femininity.)

then there's a second, much darker layer to her self hatred. she's scared of coming out because in her eyes, every time she came out before ended in the person she came out to dying/abstracting. first her mother (who is probably still alive and just didn't bother to look for Jax, so Jax never found out if she was okay after she pushed her), and then Ribbit, who abstracted due to Jax's continuous rejection/bullying. so after all of that, Jax is terrified of coming out to anyone. if Pomni finds out, Jax is afraid that she'll kill her, too. what Jax doesn't realize is that it's her own fear that's causing this issue for her. she didn't kill her mother or Ribbit, but she did hurt them because she was scared. she felt cornered, so she lashed out, and the worst possible outcome happened as a result.

ultimately, the reason why I love that Jax is a trans woman is that it explains why she was like that. it doesn't justify any of her actions, but it offers an explanation that makes me much more empathetic to her. because I've been there, too. I've been so scared that I hurt those I care about. I've avoided close friends out of fear and ended up losing them as a result. I didn't lose them to suicide the way Jax lost Ribbit, but I still understand the internal conflict and self hatred that comes with losing a friend to your own actions.

the thing about her being a trans woman is, if she had ever gotten to accept herself and transition in the circus, she likely would've become a better person as a result. she would've seen herself for who she is and decided to fix her mistakes. all she had to do to save Ribbit was accept herself and accept Ribbit's support. that's why I love that Jax is trans. it gives me hope for her. if it's possible to recover from abstraction, I think there's a good chance that she'll make amends with everyone she's hurt— including Ribbit and Kaufmo, if they recover, too.
