Gonna talk more about taking in KH because my opinion has changed over the years. I used to be...very frustrated with how the games were made and understanding of people missing whole games because uh, yeah!
As a kid, my family was poor. We had a playstation 1 because someone gave it to us iirc. The playstation 2 I believe my dad purchased only after careful consideration (and because he liked video games). So suffice to say, I understand the struggle of not having consoles then or now.
But yeah, we had a ps2 (the old thick boy o7). And we had kh1 and then we had kh2. I had no idea about CoM until I was looking into things via the ye old internet to try and understand more about Namine and the memory restoration. And even once I knew it existed, I knew I was never going to play it. Buy a whole other console for one game? Nah, no way no how.
So I didn't have the ability to play com and there was no finding cutscenes at that time. I think I didn't get com's full story until the tokyopop (rest in piss) english manga for com came out. And I begged for that because I knew that was way more cost friendly/doable than buying the game.
Eventually they made re:com on ps2 and we did get that. And I sucked at it and still haven't beaten even Sora's side of com lol
Days, god rest its beautiful soul, also was impossible for me to get. Yet another console that wasn't a reasonable purchase for my family and it was even DIFFERENT from the one com got released on. (Obviously this makes sense bc why would you publish on the same old console years later lol, but at the time I was so annoyed.)
I would piece together the vague things happening in Days from looking around online, but it was mostly a big shrug from me. I wouldn't get Days' full story until 1.5/2.5 came out for the ps3.
Now, the exception for my family was BBS. Release on the psp, we were in better financials at the time and there were several games on it that my family wanted. So we got a psp and BBS. And I have the fondest memories in the world of laying shoulder to shoulder with my sister as I watched her finish Terra's route. (I watched her play the whole game actually bc I was bad at it.)
So my college years was where I started to "fall off" from KH a bit, but I never forgot the games. My count at that point was:
Kingdom Hearts 1 - Played & watched
Kingdom Hearts CoM - manga read
Kingdom Hearts 2 - played to death
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep - watched
Coded at that point existed as a dead phone game that would soon come out as Re:Coded. And then Dream Drop Distance would follow on the 3DS.
I was really interested in DDD, almost entirely for Tron Legacy. I loved Tron in kh2 and wanted to see how the Things that Happened in Legacy affected his kh counterpart. Again, I wasn't buying a console (now with my own money) for one game. I would later by a 2DS on the cheap to join in on friends (and my wife) who were playing other games that sounded good.
But before I did that, I tracked down the cutscenes for DDD online bc I had to see what happened!! And I was glad I did even if I was like "hm" about the game overall. (This opinion too has changed lol)
All through my childhood to this point, if you asked me if you thought that everyone who liked Kingdom Hearts should play/watch every game, I would have called you a snob. I would happily bring up the console hopping of the KH series as a mark against it. And, to be quite honest, it wasn't a great move if you wanted everyone to keep up with every detail.
The thing was though that they didn't expect that. You didn't have to have seen Days to still feel for Roxas. Seeing Xion or Ventus in DDD was a hook to get you to look into the other games, not a hard requirement to understand everything that was going on.
And even then, when the KH writers and devs wanted to start bringing those different stories together, they did something about it. They put together 1.5 & 2.5. Sure, you can't play Days (rip :() or Coded, but you can see their stories. It does still require a console to play them, but that's kinda video games, as far as the dev side of things goes.
I love KH. I remember losing my mind to see that first trailer of Sora with Master's Defender. The wait of years (while in college and getting my Masters, god) had my interest focus on other things, but I was still keeping an eye out for whatever news. I bought 1.5 and 2.5, bc the ps2 was my dad's and I saved up for a ps3.
So with those collections, my list becomes:
KH1 - played
KH: (re)CoM - played some, watched the rest
KH2 - played
KH 358/2 Days - watched
KH BBS - watched & played (badly)
KH (re)Coded - watched
KH DDD - watched & eventually played
I do think the console hopping of years past is annoying. I know the natural barrier that exists to playing any video game that is money. But in the years since these games came out, they've taken steps to make those stories accessible so everyone could enter KH3 knowing what was going on.
I want to have faith that the devs know that the stuff in khux and khdr and even melody of memory (light though it is) is needed before kh4. I have faith that they'll put out a movie or make a quick summary prologue video or hell info dump it to Mickey Mouse through Scala books before you get into the meat of KH4. (whether or not the studio of square enix considers this valuable enough to spend money on is a different can of worms)
I'm not going to say some stuff about how you can't call yourself a fan without taking in the whole story. That's silly and dumb! I still haven't played Days and I tracked down an actual physical copy of it!
But I do think that if you want to play in the fandom, if you want to theorize and guess about where things are going, you should make an effort to take in the series. All the collections aside, people have uploaded every cutscene and full playthroughs to video sites online.
If you really enjoy something, if you love the series, why would you not want to dig into the full story? Fans have put so much work in to make khux accessible. Damo is an incredible person for organizing the fandub.
Put the time in. It's worth it if you already enjoy the things you've seen.
Anyway, that's my rambling about my history with the series lol
Also my final list for anyone curious:
KH1 - played
KH (re)CoM - played, but mostly watched
KH2 - played 1000 times
KH 358/2 Days - watched
KH BBS - played & watched
KH (re)Coded - watched
KH DDD - played & watched
KH 2.8 - played
KHUX - played some, watched fandub for everything else
KH3 & ReMind - played
KHDR - played first 2 chapters, watched cutscenes for the rest
KH MOM - played multiple times (WAHOO RHYTHM GAMES)

[special thanks to KH Re:Collection for the gummi and menu fonts!]
ok I’m gonna let this go for real but I have to do a poll before I do. EVERYONE READ THIS FIRST:
this poll is not about which kh games you have played or own. This poll is strictly about whether you have watched or experienced all the *cutscenes* of the KH games in their entirety. If there are any games you have not seen the full story of, vote “I have not”.
Have you watched every KH title in full?
I have
I have not
Not a KH fan (press this button please don’t mess up my results)
The unicorn uses their horn to turn one’s best memories (falling in love, greatest achievements, happiest days) into golden clocks and watches. These are worth a fortune but are very delicate and feature detailed Art Nouveau-inspired ornaments. Once a memory takes the form of a clock, the person no longer has that memory. It's wiped and kept within the timepiece. They can sell the clock to gain a fortune, but they'll be stripped of their memories in the process. The happier the memory, the more expensive the clock. Each one takes a unique shape that references the specific events of the memory.

you ever read one of your old fics and think "damn past self. you went hard on that one. i'm so proud of you." while simultaneously thinking "future self got to get their shit together and actually write something, i mean come on now."
i love your soulsong au! do eridians only get one soulmate? bc if that’s the case how is erid holding up now that every single eridian with a known soulsong has stopped responding? are they aware that the eridians on the Blip-A died or do they have their own theories as to what happened?
Eridians can have more than one soulsong! Yes! A soulsong can be anything, platonic, romantic, rivals, it's just somebody that gets you, like nobody else. Most people who have a more than one soulsong find that their entire choir sings the same tune.
It's very odd for Rocky and Adrian to only have one other singer in their choir.
As for how Erid is holding up, well that's up for debate, depending on the Eridian.
