After Birth - Elisa Albert
I read AFTER BIRTH on maternity leave, seemingly an apt choice, but in reality, a bad one. AFTER BIRTH is claustrophobic with voice, allergic to peacefulness, and repressive in personality. All of which to say, itâs a very good book.
Albertâs narrative is off-puttingly aware and smart, which is difficult to spar with when one feels dull, dumb, ravenously hungry, sore, and lonely. Itâs not as though I related to her protagonist, I didnât at all. But Ari echoed the worst of my feelings on my worst days of being a new mother, and for that, Iâm not sure if I can ever forgive it, no matter how much I admire it.
