We know just some bits of her life and how difficult it has been for her growing up, loosing parents and becoming an orphan in her early tweenties, going to collage/med school and at the same time working and being her sister's caretaker. But she is so positive, enthusiastic and hungry about creating relatioships and connections, which I find so dear and inspiring honestly. She really tries, you can see it from day one first 5 minutes. So considering this imagine meeting on your very first day at a new job a person who really tries to hear you and understand you, who stays and doesn't go away in the middle of conversation without letting you finish, who is impressed by your abilities and "learns a couple of things from you", who understands when you need a break and tells you to take it (insisting on it). And then boom he disappears without saying goodbye for months and you know nothing expect for rumours that you decide not to trust. And then on one of the worst and most stressfull day of you career, after 10 months he comes back and he is like the person you never forget, maybe different, but still there trying to help and understand you. Sooo no Langdon is not just Mel's crush, its her person. You know how much is difficult to find someone who really understands you and your needs?

Mind you she is also his kind of person, can you imagine his first day back at work after those months that he spent "alone with his own thoughts" what would have been without Mel? She is one of the few people he says sorry and what we hear when is checking her is a prepared speech. He is really sorry and worried that he potentially let her down.

I mean maybe you are not convinced that's love in a romantic way, which is fine, but you can't unsee their bond and how potentially they are each other person.
