The McDonalds Massacre

On July 18th, 1984, James Huberty stormed into a McDonalds in San Ysidro, California, screaming, “Everybody down, or I’ll kill somebody.” After ninety minutes, he shot and killed 21 people and injured 41 others before he was eventually taken down by a police sniper.

Earlier that same day, Huberty had taken his wife and kids out to lunch at a McDonalds in downtown San Diego and then spent the afternoon at the San Diego Zoo. His wife, Etna, said that there was nothing unusual about his behavior that day. However, he did discuss with her about a failed attempt to make an appointment with a mental health clinic. Due to a mix-up with his name, the clinic didn’t keep his appointment. Huberty told Etna, “Well, society had their chance.”

When he arrived home, he went to his bedroom, changed into military fatigues, gathered up a cache of guns, and approached his wife. “I want to kiss you goodbye,” he told her. “Where are you going?” she replied. “I’m going to hunt humans.” With that, he left the apartment and drove to the McDonalds, where he subsequently committed the seventh worst mass murder in modern American history.

A Timeline of the Sandy Hook Massacre

9:30 AM: Adam Lanza arrives at the school’s front entrance having already killed his mother, Nancy Lanza. He is armed with a Bushmaster rifle, Glock 20, 10mm handgun, Sig Sauer P226, 9mm handgun.

9:34 AM: Lanza fires the first shots inside the building.

9:35 AM: Newtown Police Department receives its first 911 call about the shooting from the Sandy Hook’s nurses office. Officers begin to head to the school immediately.

9:37 AM: Connecticut State Police is made away of an active shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary and deploys units.

9:40 AM: Having opened fire in classrooms eight and ten, Adam Lanza commits suicide.

9:46 AM: Officers enter the school and began evacuating survivors.

9:51 AM: Adam Lanza’s body is located by responding officers.

10:10 AM: A police sergeant states over the radio: “We have multiple, in the double digits of death here so it’s not good.”

The shooting is over. Adam Lanza has killed twenty students, six members of school staff, his mother and himself in the fourth deadliest mass shooting in United States history.
