I'm very curious about the WB comics version of Panacea. Like, I assume she was originally a supporting character introduced to handwave how supers could get punched through a building and be fine the next episode, but how did we get from there to the grimdark mind-control incest plot?
If you want an Amy retrospective you will pretty much get a new wave retrospective, because they are very interlinked (and a bunch of Amy's later characterization comes from some very specific new wave stories).
(Brocton Bay #1, with the early deformed dynamite and the first appareance of Lung the oriental dragon)
So, in the late 50s Wildbow comics found itself in a very messy legal situation because DC was suing every superman shaped character and WB Comics had 5 very superman shaped characters, so during it Wildbow kind of started throwing shit at the wall to see what would stick. And thats how we got the Brocktom Bay Brigade in the 60s, the first in a new wave of heroes (Yeah, thats why they got that name later).
Their backstory was simple, 4 adventurer's travel too deep into a cave in the amazon forest were they find a shinning meteorite, now they have superpowers. Now they have to defend their hometown from eeeeeevil.
They are Manpower, Lady photon, Brandish and The Dynamite (Fun fact, flashbangs were created by the british years later).
You would be forgiven if you thought it was a fantastic four ripoff, because it kind of was but in my opinion it's vibes were more doom patrol than ff.
But more importantly, they were fundamental pillars for the WBU. A lot of iconic things you think about when i saw Wildbow come from their original series.
Lung, Kaiser and the empire (who weren't nazis yet, but also they were absolutely a metaphor for nazis), Abaddon, Marquis and Brockton bay as a city itself. All came from the first, and only, Brockton Bay Brigade series.
(BBB Big Wedding Special #1)
For a couple of years they were on top of the world, pretty much every WBU character crossed over with them from Aegis to even Scion (Their interactions were always so funny man I swear)
But the thing is, all of the fantastic 4 rip offs eventually got cancelled: Doom Patrol, Challengers of the Unknown and eventually the Brocton Bay Brigade. But not for the reason you are thinking of.
You probably heard me say that they crossed over with Scion, who was one of the many characters that they couldn't use use due to the lawsuit. Well they won, and the quintumvirate fucking came back.
So slowly they started bleeding numbers, so they started throwing shit at the wall to see what sticked. Two pregnancy plots, a fifth member called Fleur that nobody liked, too much of the interdimentional bother that was Wibblewobble and them revealing their identities as a gimmick.
But if they were going to get cancelled, might aswell go with a bang.
(The Brocton Bay Brigade Show, 1969)
Also shotout to the low budget animated series. Still salty their goofy version of Kaiser became a racist dog whistle in 4 chan.
Okay so like, i get why you say that, but also ehhhhhhhhh. I was never completely sold on Post Apollyon wars Taylor.
(Also, i think Barker and Biter are pretty much Worm Leroy)
(Armsmaster Vol 2 #17, first full apapreance of the Undersiders and coil)
So, Post Apollyon Wars Taylor is just Diet Taylor. She wad introduced during the Armsmaster ongoing atound its second year with a whole reimagining of the undersiders.
This version was a Cherlie's angels esque group hired by Coil (who is also kind of Regent?) to break shit and distract people. Fun fact, they are pretty much all new characters when you think about it (Sarah Livsey was replaced with Lisa Wilborn, Leroy got replaced by Rachel and Brian got replaced by Aisha. And blueflame is also there i guess).
Also also I FUCKING HATE POST APOLLYON BITCH. Why did you make her so uncomfortably kinky man.
Taylor has a similar backstory in wich like, she is a bullied teenager that gets superpowers. But instead of the Skittering Medallion she is actually just a Post-human (The catchall excuse for superpowers we don't want to explain).
The thing is, there are two fundamentally different things about Post Apollyon wars Taylor.
1) Because nobody gave a shit about the vomics code authority anymore they were allowed to be more creepy and give her actual bug powers and not a bug flavoured Alexandeia package. This is also where she gets the more recognizable 'Skitter' persona.
2) She is actually bullied for being a post human that cant control her powers (and thats also the reason she works with coil in the first place, to control her powers)... so her personality is also completely different?
But like, she was just a minor antagonist in a random arc. The thing is, something would happen that would kind of solidify that version of her.
(Armsmaster the animated series Season 1 episode 52 "Double TTrouble")
Armsmaster, one of the main moneymakers of the WBU also had the privilege of having one of the most iconic tv shows. And because of how many childrens saw it most people see it as the definitive version and Armsmaster and his rogue's gallery, and they will fight you in wichever way they are different to canon.
In some cases it is very very good, the madhouse 9 (as much as i hate the censored name) was pretty much redefined by this show (and you can tell it really inspired McCrae's slaughterhouse 9) and Al Pachino was surprisingly good as Jack the Knife.
But with Skitter they kind of grabbed the Post AW version and ran with it while giving her all of her Pre AW plot beats. Thing is, i don't find her as compeling when her lack of friends is due to magical racism instead of teenagers just being assholes. "Look at her with her too pale and beautiful skin and black raven hair" ass bullying.
(Lisa and Taylor take Colin hostage in The New Armsmaster Adventures ep 3 "Girls night out")
That being said, there is a reason this show almost won an Emmy with 'Snitches get stiches' (it's adaptation of thr night Tattletale died) because like, we got more episodes with Taylor and Lisa being villains but also teenagers, to the point you can see that even under his cold mask Collin has a soft spot for them. So Lisa dyin hits Collin, Taylor and the audience even harder when she is killed after declaring against Thomas Calvert, with the bittersweet satisfaction that in the end, that gave Collin enough evidence to finally put him behind bars.
(Promotional image of the new Armsmaster and Dragon adventures)
I do feel like her joining the Dragonflight feels more earned than her joining the wards. They did explore better the angst and edge she has unlike her peers and how she has to adapt to being a hero.
I don't like that they threw everything they were planning under the bus to make that happen in the comics too.
(Last issue of Skitter's first mini before cancelation)
So, i know it looks too edgy, but a body horror story about a woman turning into a bug would have been really fucking cool man. Because if you are going to go angst about powers make it real angst.
Like, 'Skitter gets trapped in the goblin kingdom and comes out changed' fucked so much as an idea man. But no, they cancelled it after three chapters just to turn comic Taylor into TAAS Taylor.
Also, fun fact, after this point you can blame everything bad that ever happens un the WBU and reality on Editor in Chief chambers. I fucking hate that guy.
(Issue #0 of the second Skitter miniseries, by issue #6 she would become weaver)
I can't sugarcoat it, this series was a total cashgrab that speedran Taylor' greatest hits while queerbaiting the audience.
Taylor becomes GOOD, and she joins the GUILD and now she is magically her chirpy flirt version from the cartoon with the brown hair and green eyes! THIS is the origin of TINO (Taylor In Name Only).
This is the third time they killed Tattletale already man, but this time it was Breed's fault because Breed and Genoschythe the eyereaper are very popular right now.
You know what? Let's put all of our hopes, dreams and company's stock into making Genoscythe the eyereaper a thing people care about because anti-heroes are so hip and cool!
And... WB Comics was one of the victims of the 1996 comic book crash. By 1999 they had to pretty much sell all the movie rights to a shit ton of popular characters including the quadrumvirate and the east coast wards.
So, did you ever wonder why Taylor didn't appear in Protectorate or Protectorate International? Yeah thats right we are talking about...
(Skitter 1 movie poster, first of a low budget triology)
You know, i will never not find funny that during the peak of TINO they got John Carpenter to do a Skitter movie and then got surprised when he went body horror with it.
Because like, it was a filler movie for inbetween the Irregular's movies. So i really apreciate the love Carpenter gave to a character he didn't know shit about.
Like, what can i say, i love the Carpenter triology because he got that Skitter was a horror movie in the making, while also keeping it a superhero movie.
My ranking of them is pretty much the universal one 2 > 1 > 3 but i really like that they made Khepri a separate character and the villain in the third movie as the dark side of Taylor she has to beat by accepting it.
But the thing is, you now had two very different versions of Skitter people wanted to see, so what solution did WB come up with?
(Two comics released the same month, completely different tones, nobody even say anything about it even tho we have time for another dead wife flashbavk with tattletale)
Taylor kind of flip flops between betweem being Dragon and Defiant's surrogate daughter and being an insectoid monstrosity and nobody brings it up. It's like there are to very different Taylors but we just kind of assume they are one and the same
And thats kind of how it was until 2011 when Collin fucked up the timeline during the Valhalla event.
Like, Taylor in the current WBCU takes inspo from this version of the character (wich is a whole other can of worms).
(The paranormal Skitter)
But just let me say, there is a reason the paranormal skitter takes more inspo from worm than from the post apollyon era.
She would have a minor role in the Revelations event when Dragon died but eventually she would be rebooted out of existance alongside the rest of the wormverse after the Valhalla event when Defiant fucked up reality trying to bring back Dragon.
So, with this retrospective done i will probably do a new wave one next? Some of you were asking about Amy and honestly thats a whole other very interesting rabbithole to delve into.
Please tell me if you want any other retrospective!
Loved your takes even if we disagree on TAAS Skitter, she walked so Legend could stand around on a pride month cover. I'll agree the bullying was a little weak but that's just a general post human problem and the way school bullies can't actually do anything that scary on screen and I'm sick of everyone just overcompensating and turning her bullies into Madhouse fangirls or Empire wannabes. As for other retrospectives hundred percent New Wave. You touched on the event that started it with how they fridged her for Scion but I'd be interestered to see your take on Guts and Glory cos killing off TT to make T sad is bad but its nowhere near as controversial as half of the Red Queen stuff. Every new Lisa may have a clock above her head ticking down but they aren't being blatant about it, now every new comic or show has to try and give you signs for why Amy is like that and I have friends who just get nothing but comments about it even if all she's doing is making her friend a lunch box.
Honestly i will admit i have a bias. Like so many my introduction to Wildbow was Worm, so i find her PreHuman characterization much more fascinating than her PostHuman/Post Apllyon wars one as a predescesor to ParaHuman Taylor.
Still, i am happy for PostHuman Taylor fans getting more of her in Wildbow Reborn.

I like how the font makes it look like it says SHITTER
that was a really big meme around the time the first skitter movie came out

So, apparently some of you aren't aware???
Wildbow comics is fucking old, but i might as well start easy and tell you the lore of pre Apollyon Wars Taylor.
(Actual first appareance of Taylor Hebert and the homage i did for badly drawn worm)
Around the 60s Wildbow comics finally won a whole shitshow of a lawsuit against DC comics, that at the time was suing whatever superman shaped characters they could find, and Wildbow had several superman ripoffs, so, in the meantime they tried to create new more original characters, one of them was Aegis, the human shield.
He was hip teenager that had to deal with both teenager problems and superhero problems yadda yadda, and one of those troubles was falling in love with the creepy supervillain.
Taylor Hebert was created as both a supervillain and a love interest of Aegis, as well as a clear parody of spiderman, having a similar background as bullied teens that got bug powers, but while Peter got bitten by a radioactive spider, Taylor got cursed by the Skittering Scarab medallion (wich was a blue beetle rip off instead).
This silver age Taylor didn't go by skitter (and she wouldn't be called that until the Apollyon Wars reboot) but instead she was bug girl, and she had more vaguely insect powers (stenght, agility, endurance etc)
The thing that made her different from others was that she was a sympathetic villain that never went to far. She was esentially a teenager lashing out, just in the more augmented reality of comics. And that made it very interesting to flirt with redemption, but there was one thing that prevented that from happening...
(Screenshot of 'Unbeatable Aegis' episode 8 season 2 'The Undersiders Unite')
The undersiders, led by the mysterious Coil was a group of supervillains Aegis had previously beaten, now joined together to finish him, and commits many crimes along the way. They were also surprisingly great friends.
Don't get me wrong, they betrayed each other a lot, but they always ended up forgiving each other, because they were the only people that truly got what was to be a supervillain with a gimmich that everybody laughed at. Specially Bug Girl, who finally got friends that accepted her in this sort of toxic found family.
It was a clear contrast with Charlie's (yeah, he became Carlos after the first reboot) own lonelyness, he constantly ruined relationships to keep his secret and it really made tempting for him to just... change sides.
It was the easy road that Taylor took, and that he was still happy about. And thats honestly quite facinating, because it then makes you think. What would happen if you take that away?
(Aegis the human shield issue 123, the night tattletale died)
There is a reason the night tattletale died is considered one of the two things that ended the WB silver age (The other being Vikare's death), because the wiplash is fucking real.
You just had a whole arc of Aegis beating coil, about Sarah (i still find very funny how Worm made it her real name instead of the post apollyon one) trying to get out of the whole criminal lifestyle and wanting to run away with Taylor (With all the Sapphic vibes that had), so having Coil's fuckass son come back and fuck it all up is so heartbreaking man.
Because it was all so preventable. If Taylor had trusted Charlie to help her, if Leroy (Silver age Hellhound) hadn't accidentaly ratted out Tattletale, if Sarah hadn't decided to trust herself and not her powers as a show of trust... she would be alive.
Still salty they used it to springboard Taylor's and Charlie's relationship and rush her redemption arc. But beyond that, it's very fucking good. So sad this is the last good Bug girl story before Worm tho.
(The iconic Giant-Size Wards #1 with Chariot, Flechette, Weld, Aegis, Weaver and Tecton)
You know when a story is good but your fave gets dragged through the mud in it? Because like, the All New All Different Wards are great, when it came out it was a great step forward in representation and Tecton is just so fucking cool (The Irregular Cinematic Universe shouldn't have focused on him tho).
But Taylor doesn't do anything besides being Aegis' girlfriend in it? Like, you can't tell they didn't know what to do with her, hell Peter Ness didn't bother to make her gay (and he did make everyone he could very fucking gay).
You could make a good arc out of how she doesn't really fit in the group compared with the undersiders, but whem they meet it's like they don't know each other, it's so fucking infuriating.
Are you telling me there is no angst because she switched sides? Thats some bullshit. The only good thing that came out of Taylor has weaver was the name and the suit. Nothing more. Except one single story.
(The both famous and infamous conclusion to the Deluge event)
So, at one point they introduce the travellers as this foil villain group. And one of them, echidna, makes a clone of tattletale to fuck with Taylor. And holy shit, that was so good, you finally adresses the elephant in the room, i wonder what developement will it lead-
She fucking dies in the next arc. Because Aegis has to suffer. Leviathan fucking kills her with no fanfare. Yeah, that leviathan (not really, it was like a dude, more like the villain from the protectorate movies).
You know that she was one of the reason's Gail Simone made the women in refrigerators blog right? It was that bad. Jean grey, Gwen Stacy, Barbara Gordon, Kyle's girlfriend and Taylor Hebert.
And in less than a year, Charlie started dating Shadow stalker because he is a SLUT and i hate him. And the worst part was that Taylor was so unpopular that she didn't get love from the writer's like for example Barbara becoming oracle.
No, instead she got...
(Taylor Hebert comes back as Kephri, Wards #411)
Most people already know it, but this whole thing was just the result of one editor insisting really hard into making an event that nobody wanted to do that pretty much ruined the Wildbow comics lore.
So, the magical amulet? Actually an artifact created by the Skittering Entity or some shit. Because actually all capes get their powers from the entities, isn't that neat? Isn't that cool? Scion is now even specialler now.
And you know, even with that, even with fucking soace magic alien resurecting Taylor... it could have been good man. You could have Taylor changed by the experience, trying to come with terms with her own death and place in the world, confront Aegis for moving on so fast... but instead we got a Madellyn Pryor level character assasination.
The omnicidal jealous ex, thats the bedt they could come up with, holy shit.
This whole retcon fucked up the lore so bad they rebooted the whole universe to run away from it.
So you could say Taylor Heber is the indirect cause of Apollyon wars.
(Fellow Fridged woman Glory Girl in Apollyon Wars #6)
So, even with the end of the world editorial needs to give Taylor Hebert one last fuck you. Do you know the amount of hatedom born from Taylor killing Glory girl? Do you know how many people, to this day, still refuse to read worm because she killed their blorbo in 1988???
And you know why? To make Scion sad, to show he had humanity unlike Apollyon and the other entities. People fucking clapped when Scion killed Taylor, nobody gave a fuck, or stopped to say "damn, so sad Taylor got possesed after death".
FLECHETTE, FUCKING FLECHETTE SAID "Take that you worm!" When i red it i was so fucking angry man. That book was just hype moments and aura wirh a side of mysoginy.
But in a cosmic sense I find hilarious that Gold morning and Worm is just reverse Apollyon Wars. You can tell McCrae also fucking hated it.
So yeah, thats how the story of Pre-Apollyon wars Taylor ends, dying alone how she was scared to.
Please tell me if you want me to get into some other WB comics characters or if to make a summary of Post Apollyon Wars Taylor (and i sure do have opinions about her).
Great summary (glad you mentioned Leroy cos im still thinking of doing a fic where Leroy is Rachel's brother), really hope you do another for later Taylor cos like thats the one people are actually drawing and writing fic about for a reason even if so much of it is doing twists on all these old issues.
Honestly Leroy as Hellhound in underrated, but i do find funny that thats pretty much why we have Aisha and Brian in Worm.
Like, Pre-Apollyon Wars Gruesome Imp was Brian, but after the reboot they introduced Aisha to be part of the Brockton Bay Bomshells.
It makes sense that them being so different led to McCrae kind of making them two separate distinct characters.
I do thini the tried to do the same with the hounds during Wildbow Reborn but it kind of went nowhere.

So, apparently some of you aren't aware???
