it's kinda wild that the english verb "to be" is actually a merger of two different copula verbs in old english, but even in old english both beon and wesan were already irregular as well, because beon doesn't have a past tense and wesan comes from a proto-germanic word that's a merger of two different proto-indo-european verbs. like already from the very beginning, was some irregular bullshittery happening with the copula verbs, because of the nature of how copulas tend to evolve in languages
