Letter to Gisele Stuart MP and John Cryer MP Sometime in 1926 my mother moved with her parents to be close to my grandfather's family in Margate. My grandfather was a plumber. During the 1920's and 30’s he earned a living fixing taps for landlords and hoteliers, benefiting from interwar, seaside, holidaymakers. My grandmother supplemented his wages by taking in bed and breakfast guests. My mother and her brother slept in a tent in the garden and spent long days on the beach. My grandfather had been in Palestine during the 1914-18 war. His sisters used to say, "he went to war a man and came back a child". The scenes he had witnessed, the battles he had been in, left him a frightened man. In 1939 Margate was surrounded by fortifications. Barbed wire replaced bunting on the sea front. The trippers and holidaymakers stopped coming. In 1940 the British retreated from Europe leaving the beaches of Dunkirk to make passage across the channel on a fleet of small boats. My mother went down to the seafront to help. Later she and her parents boarded a train full of war weary and wounded soldiers to London. Owners of gardens along the route had displays of union jacks and signs that read "welcome home". My mother now lives in an old peoples home in York. She is 91. Recently I visited her. She said, 'Why do we fight, we have only got each other' We have only got each other; The EU was established to end war in Europe. The EU is perhaps the only positive legacy of World War two. We have only got each other. The European Community was created to prevent war, to build integration and trade. Britain is a trading nation. To trade, human beings need to travel. We are all nomads, I am a migrant. Carrying goods, equipped with skills and sharing ideas. Let them in. Let them in. Closing down borders separates human beings, imprisons us in what we know and will make us poorer. For those on the left there has been no lexit. The Brexit is a Rightxit. Britain has leaped even further to the right. We now face, not only segregation from our fellow Europeans but also segregation based on ability aged 11 in the form of the return of grammar schools. London voted to stay but you, John Cryer voted to leave. Since voting to leave we have seen a significant rise in racist hate crime. EU citizens who have been living here for years are now concerned about their status. Some fear deportation. We should be telling our children about the world we live on not the countries we live in. You talk about a democratic deficit in Europe but the democracy we need is at the local level. We need a more fluid democracy. Most European countries have a degree of proportional representation. Involve people with diverse voices in politics but don’t pretend that promoting nationalism does anything more than stoke suspicion and resentment. We are stronger together, Europe is a Union: stronger workers rights, power to negotiate. Grumpy French farmers will negotiate a better T TIP than Boris Johnson. When did the left give up on internationalism? Jo Cox was right. 'There is more that unites us than divides us" We depend on international agreements to defend Human Rights. By voting for Brexit you voted for the destruction of the Human Rights Act. You made it harder for British artists and journalists in our democracy to fight and speak out for artists in countries less democratic than ours. Artists like Ashraf Fayadh in a Saudi Jail waiting 800 lashes or Lou Xiao Bo Nobel Poet laureate incarcerated in China. We are going to build a creative Union. We are all migrants. In the Apathy band we are from Ghana via Jamaica via Hackney via Ireland via Austro Hungary, via New York, via Italy, via China via Taiwan via London. Let them in. We have only got each other. I write to you to help us. More democracy yes but also more solidarity. Solidarity with our fellow Europeans. Building understanding, Pooling sovereignty to build a better world and a world at peace. We are asking for a second referendum on the outcome of negotiations with Europe. Britain must be able to vote on our destination. Dear no voter please vote to remain in Europe. We have only got each other. Bob and Roberta Smith.' The painting is inspired by a conversation with my 90 year old mother who grew up in Margate in the 1930's only to leave after evacuation of Dunkirk traveling up to London with the returning soldiers. She remembers people waving to the trains from the end of their gardens holding banners that said 'welcome home'. We were talking about her experience of the second world, she expressed her frustration that Europe had involved the world in a global battle with itself. She concluded, 'why do we fight we have only got each other'. My view is that The EU has it's inspiration in the post war desire for peace. Like the 1948 UN charter on human rights, the Geneva conventions and efforts such as MSF it is an agent in creating peace and stability. It benefits business and builds the economic base for prosperity but beyond that it is fundamentally about peace. We have only got each other, let's work together.
