Move over Scabbers There’s a new rat in town. As of January 21st, the Palo Verde Valley District Library gained a new friend. Our very first library pet: a four-week old female rat. You can now come into the library and visit this lovely little lady. She’s feisty and extremely curious. Riding on the shoulders of staff members is one of her favorite things, along with being read aloud to. Feel free to pull up a chair and read her a story of your choice. The staff at the library would also love your help! You are encouraged to visit our online survey or let us know in-person what you think we should name our new friends. Friends, plural? That would be correct! We are currently searching for the perfect BFF to keep our new friend company. Soon there will be a second rat joining our library family. The naming contest will last until February 6th, with the winning pair of names announced on February 7th. Visit your local library. Observe. If it’s buzzing with activity, fight to keep it. If it’s scruffy and empty, do what you can to transform it into what it should be. One of the cheapest and most universal forms of human empowerment that this country has.

This is a book store called El Ateneo in Buenos Aires, Argentina! You can have coffee while sitting on the stage. One of my favorite places in my city.

“Librarians and library workers are community leaders, motivators and social change agents. During the conference, attendees will hold the power to influence social change by means of example. Members will have an opportunity to support the people of Orlando by wearing armbands in support of diversity, equality, and inclusion; volunteering for community relief projects; and supporting local minority owned businesses. ALA also is currently working on efforts to support an onsite blood drive and Read-Out event. “You can make a difference regardless of whether you attend the ALA Annual Conference. In a tragedy, we often feel overwhelmed or powerless, but within the next few days the ALA Annual Conference website will empower members to give support. The site will provide a list of relief organizations supporting Orlando shooting victims and their families. The site also will have information regarding ALA diversity and inclusion resources. “Like the libraries we represent, the profession’s commitment to supporting communities, social justice, and abolishing intolerance is unwavering.”
