these things don't fulfill the inherent social functions they have in person. there is are no facial expressions you're missing if you don't look at the other person's minecraft character. there is no functional difference between standing right next to someone and standing 3-4 blocks away, you're no impeding them in any way

yet people do it anyway. they keep a few block distance between each other. they look at each other when talking, whether it's by going afk with the cursor on the other person or by tracking their idle movement

which gives us these moments where they close that distance or exaggerate the eye contact and suddenly it means something, because it's different! this thing that has no difference in game mechanics, gains meaning through the social conventions. crouching at each other and staring at each other. bumping into the other player. standing right next to a player until slightly nudging them

- when someone is doing some dumb shit in public and everyone is applauding. hell yeah everyone agrees that guy is dope that's awesome!!

- laughter. we have a noise that means we're happy! that's so cute!!!

- AND ALL LAUGHS ARE DIFFERENT AND EQUALLY WEIRD!!! my sister snorts! i squeak! one person i know sounds like a witch!! it's so fun!!!

- when a kid is on their parents shoulders in a crowd and they just tower over everyone else

- when you and your friend both hear some weird ass shit, make silent eye contact for a solid second, then burst out laughing

- when you give a stranger a compliment and they do that "oh! thanks!!" and immediately either touch or look at what you complimented and smile

- jewelryyyyy we're just decorating ourselves for funsies how can you not love that

- this one may be more me specific but looking at your old art/writing and feeling fond for younger you while simultaneously cringing so very hard

- when you're talking to someone and you see them have a lightbulb moment

- the little mannerisms individual people have, like snapping when trying to remember a word. i find it charming

- i also find it charming how when we like someone (platonically or romantically) we start doing it too. our brain is just like "they're awesome so that thing is awesome and we should do it!" i just find that so fun
