SCENE 1
Fade-in to a sunny morning on Hester Street, zoom in onto the mouse neighborhood where we pan over to the Mousekewitz family house. Cut to the interior Mama serving a tray of cheese muffins in the kitchen, while Tanya is helping feed baby Yasha.
MAMA: Thank you, Tanya.
TANYA: You’re welcome, Mama.
-Yasha coos happily-
MAMA: Fievel! Fievel! What is keeping you, you silly boy?
-Fievel runs into the kitchen-
FIEVEL: Morning, Mama! Muffins smell good! (grabs one from the tray and is about to leave for school) Bye, Mama!
MAMA: Aren’t you forgetting your school bag?
FIEVEL: Oops!
-Fievel runs to his and Tanya’s bedroom so he can grab his school bag-
TANYA: Come on, Fievel. We don’t want to be late for school.
FIEVEL: Don’t worry, Tanya. I’m coming.
-Tanya grabs a muffin as well, and she follows Fievel out the front door-
FIEVEL & TANYA: Bye, Mama!
MAMA: Have a good day at school, my children!
-cut to Fievel and Tanya on their way to school before they meet up with Tony Toponi-
FIEVEL: Hi, Tony!
TONY: Hey, Fillie! You and Tillie on your way to school, eh?
TANYA: Yes, we are. We don’t want to be late.
TONY: Ey, I can escort ya there if ya like! Hehe.
FIEVEL: Great! Let’s get going! Last one there is a rotten egg! -giggles-
TANYA: Hey, Fievel, wait up!
-Tony chuckles as he walks with Fievel and his older sister. Soon, they reach the school, Tony notices a group of students playing baseball-
TONY: Hey, Fillie! Look! (points)
FIEVEL: That looks like a fun game, Tony! I wonder what it is.
TANYA: Me too.
TONY: Hehehe. They’re playing baseball.
FIEVEL: Baseball?
TONY: Yep.
FIEVEL: Let’s go see the game! Come on!
TANYA: Fievel, wait!
-Fievel runs over to see the baseball game, and waves to the students, one of the bigger kids, the shortest who wears an English Victorian blazer, waves back while the others just stare dryly-
FIEVEL: Hi! That looks like a fun game to play. Can I join in?
STUDENT 1: (English accent) Can he, please?
STUDENT 2: (to Fievel) You, joining on our baseball team? (starts laughing)
FIEVEL: What’s so funny?
STUDENT 2: You can’t join our baseball team, cause you’re too little!
STUDENT 3: Yeah! Nothing but a teensy-weensy boy mousey!
FIEVEL: I am not! Anything other kids can do, I can do too!
STUDENT 2: Oh, yeah? Prove it.
STUDENT 1: Hey, now! Cut that out. He’s a nice fellow.
STUDENT 2: Keep your nose out of this, Dorset.
TONY: (appearing with Tanya following him) Hey, let him talk, will ya? Fillie here is trying to prove to you that he can try and play this game.
TANYA: Yes. He is my little brother, but he can do anything other boys can do. Give him a chance!
STUDENT 2: (laughs) Sorry, miss. He’s just too little. Come on, guys. Let’s get back to playing.
-Fievel dejectedly hangs his head and moves on, Tanya and Tony attempt to comfort him-
TANYA: Don’t be sad, Fievel. It’s okay.
FIEVEL: But, I tried my best to ask them if I could join in on the game and they won’t let me.
TONY: Ah, don’t let them get the best of ya, Fillie. You gotta be confident and be able to do it, and not let naysayers get in your way. (pats Fievel on the back) You can do this.
TANYA: Tony’s right, Fievel. I know you can do it.
FIEVEL: I’ll try. Thank you, Tanya.
TANYA: Come on, we don’t want to be late!
FIEVEL: Ok. Bye, Tony!
TONY: See ya later, Fillie! I’ll meet you and your sister at the end of the day!
-Later, at the Mousekewitz family house, Fievel, holding his hat, sits with Papa in the rocking chair-
FIEVEL: I tried to prove it to the school’s new baseball team that I can try and play, Papa. But they told me I was little.
PAPA: (comforting his son) Don’t be sad, Fievel. You are a little boy mouse, but I know that you can do it.
FIEVEL: How, Papa?
PAPA: You see, my son, you need to have confidence in yourself.
FIEVEL: Confidence?
PAPA: Yes. It’ll help you be able to tell the baseball team that you can do it and hopefully they will let you play with them. Besides, it really doesn’t matter how little you are. When you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.
FIEVEL: Really?
PAPA: Certainly. Everything will turn out okay in the end, Fievel. I promise.
FIEVEL: (smiles) I love you, Papa. Thank you.
-Fievel hugs his Papa-
SCENE 2
-Crossfade to the next morning. Fievel and Tanya have pancakes Mama made for breakfast-
TANYA: It’s okay, Fievel. Everything is going to be okay. Remember what Papa said.
FIEVEL: (smiles) I will. Thank you, Tanya. (eats his pancakes) Your pancakes are good, Mama. Thank you!
MAMA: You’re welcome, Fievel.
TANYA: So, Fievel, what are you gonna do today?
FIEVEL: Well, I cleaned my room and everything. (grabs his hat)
MAMA: That’s good, Fievel. Go and have fun today. But be home by dark.
FIEVEL: We will, Mama!
-As Fievel and Tanya head outside, Tiger appears-
TIGER: Hi-ya, Fie!
FIEVEL: Hi, Tiger!
TIGER: Wanna play some games today?
FIEVEL: Yeah! We could play a game of catch.
TIGER: Great idea! I like that game very much.
TANYA: First, we have to find something that we can throw and catch.
-The three look around to find a ball-shaped object that they could play with. At last, Fievel finds a wadded-up ball of newspaper-
FIEVEL: Hey, guys! Here’s one I found!
-Fievel, Tanya and Tiger start playing catch with the ball of paper, while staying close to the mouse neighborhood-
FIEVEL: Okay, Tiger! Ready!
TIGER: Oh, boy! This is going to be fun!
-Fievel throws the ball and Tiger runs back to catch it-
TIGER: -as the ball lands in his paw- I got it!
TANYA: Wow!
FIEVEL: (to Tiger) That was a nice catch!
TIGER: Okay, Fie! Catch! (throws the ball back to Fievel. The little boy mouse giggles as he runs back and jumps in the air before he catches the ball)
FIEVEL: I got it, Tiger!
TANYA: Good job, Fievel!
TIGER: Way to go, buddy! That was a really great catch you did!
FIEVEL: Thanks, Tiger!
TANYA: Can I have my turn please, Fievel?
FIEVEL: (smiles) Sure, Tanya!
TANYA: I’m ready.
-Fievel throws the ball and Tanya runs back. She stops and looks up to see the ball falling toward her. She holds out her arms and catches the ball. Fievel and Tiger cheer her on-
TIGER: Oh, wow!
FIEVEL: Nice catch, Tanya!
TANYA : (giggles, then throws the ball back to Fievel) Catch, Fievel!
FIEVEL: (running back) I got it, Tanya!
-when he catches the ball, Fievel makes a diving catch before he hits the ground and slides-
FIEVEL: (screaming) Whoa!
-Tanya and Tiger run over to see if Fievel is okay. As the dust clears, Fievel is shown lying on his hands and knees, covered with dust and coughing, the front of his hat covers his eyes -
TANYA: Fievel! Are you okay?
TIGER: I hope he didn’t get hurt! Fie! Are you alright, buddy?
-Fievel coughs again and as he gets up then dusts himself and his hat off-
FIEVEL: I’m okay, Tiger. (puts his hat back on) Just some scrapes.
TANYA: Oh, Fievel, I’m glad you’re not hurt.
???: Whoa! I gotta say, that was a great catch you did there, Fillie!
-Fievel, Tanya and Tiger turn to see Tony and Bridget-
FIEVEL: Tony! Bridget!
TANYA: (smiles) What are you doing here?
BRIDGET: Tony and I were enjoying a little stroll together when we spotted you.
TONY: Yeah, I told Bridge all about the baseball game and how great I think you’d do on the team.
BRIDGET: And I think Tony is right, Fillie. When you put your mind to it, you can do anything, no matter how little you are.
FIEVEL: (giggles) That’s just like what Papa said. Anyway, it’s nice to see you again..
TONY: Eh, no problem. Say, want me to help you learn?
FIEVEL: Sure!
-Tony steps up and picks up the ball of paper, Bridget and Tanya sit together and watch-
TONY: Are ya ready?
FIEVEL: Yes I am.
-Tony throws the ball and Fievel runs back and he looks up to see the ball in the air. Fievel jumps up and catches the ball-
FIEVEL: I got it, Tony! I got it!
TONY: Way to go, Fillie!
-Tanya and Bridget clap for Fievel-
FIEVEL: Okay, Tiger! Catch!
TIGER: I’m gonna get it, Fie! (runs up, then catches the ball) Hey, I caught the ball! (starts pouncing at the paper ball) Look, Fie! Just like with a ball of yarn, get it?
FIEVEL: (giggling) That’s a good one, Tiger!
(Tiger laughs as he plays with the ball)
TONY: Yo, Tig! We gotta focus on helping Fillie.
TIGER: Oh, yeah. Got it. Ready, Fie?
-Fievel nods and Tiger throws the ball to him. After Fievel catches it, he then throws to Tony-
SCENE 3
-Crossfade to the baseball team practicing in the schoolyard, circa three days later. The four biggest students who turned Fievel down, sit on a bench and exchange jokes. Albert Dorest, the English boy mouse who defended him, sits on the far end of the and watches them disdainfully-
STUDENT 2: And he comes up and says, “Hi! I want to play with you guys.” Then, I told him: “You can’t join our baseball team because you’re a L-I-T-T-L-E mouse!” Haha!
STUDENT 3: Yep! A teensy-weensy mousey. (snickering)
ALBERT: (upset) Now, now, Smedley, that’s enough. You shouldn’t judge someone for their size.
STUDENT 2: Aw, put a crumpet in it, Albert!
STUDENT 3: Yeah! Who asked you anyway?
-cut to Fievel and Tony-
TONY: (whispering to Fievel) Go get ‘em, Fillie. You got this.
FIEVEL: Thanks, Tony.
STUDENT 4: Holy smokes! Look!
STUDENT 3: What is it?
STUDENT 4: Someone’s coming our way right now.
-Sure enough, Fievel approaches them, with Tony behind him-
STUDENT 2: Well, well. If it isn’t the kid who wants to play with us.
-Fievel approaches the baseball team-
FIEVEL: Can I still please play with you guys? I can do this. Honest.
STUDENT 2: Listen to me, kid. That’s still out of the question, because you’re…
ALBERT: Will you stop it? He’s really wanting to play with us. Give him a chance, please. I had the same experience before him. You see, before I came to America, I played a game called cricket when I lived in England.
TONY: Cricket? What’s that?
FIEVEL: Please tell us about it.
ALBERT: Cricket is a favorite sport of many in England, that is besides croquet, of course. The way it’s played is different in some ways, but also very similar because of hitting balls with a strong stick. And another thing, you and I, FIevel, we actually have something in common.
FIEVEL: We do?
ALBERT: Yes. When my family came to this country a couple of years ago, it seemed strange, but I soon got used to it. And when I officially transferred to this school, I quickly took interest in this sport. When I first asked to join the team, I was made fun of because of my size and the way I talked. But did I give up? Oh, no. I proved myself by showing how well I can do at baseball thanks to my experience with cricket…and look at me now.
FIEVEL: (softly) Ooh, wow.
STUDENT 2: I…I had no idea.
STUDENT 3: Neither did I.
STUDENT 4: I guess…we were wrong about him.
ALBERT: You see? All that I said about my experiences are true. If I can do it, so can he.
FIEVEL: He’s right. I can do this. Right, Tony?
TONY: Yepperoo, Fillie. I know you got this. (chuckles)
STUDENT 2: (to Fievel) Hey, kid. We’re very sorry for picking on you. Albert’s right about what he said. How would you like to join our baseball team?
FIEVEL: You mean that?
STUDENT 2: I really do.
FIEVEL: Oh, thank you.
-to that, Fievel smiles and he runs up to join in on practicing with the baseball team. He looks back, and Tony smiles at him and gives a “you’re doing great” gesture-
ALBERT: One of the things you need is a mitt. That’s what you use to catch the ball.
FIEVEL: Really?
ALBERT: Yes. We’ll get you one.
-Crossfade to Fievel practicing with the players while Tony watches. One of the players throws the ball to Fievel, who catches it with his mitt-
ALBERT: Good job.
-Fievel starts to throw the ball-
FIEVEL: I’m ready! (throws the ball back to the player who catches)
TONY: (smiles) Nice throw, Fillie. Stay focused.
-Fievel is then seen practicing batting. He misses the ball a few times until he is able to hit it with the bat, as a result of Tony cheering him on. After hitting it, he watches the ball fly off with a smile of confidence. Cut inside the Mouesekewitz house, Fievel sits at the supper table with his family, recounting the events of practice-
FIEVEL: I learned a whole lot about baseball during my practice. The bigger kids showed me how to use a mitt to catch the ball and also how to use a bat and hit the ball out of the in-field.
TANYA: That’s neat, Fievel! I think our game of playing catch must’ve helped too.
-She pats her brother’s shoulder, he smiles back at her and nods-
PAPA: (claps) Very splendid indeed, my son. I told you that you could accomplish anything. (looks to Mama) Isn’t he a wonderfully fast learner, my dear?
MAMA: (nods) Most impressive. You never cease to amaze me, Fievel.
FIEVEL: (giggles) Thanks, Mama.
TANYA: By the way, when’s the big game?
FIEVEL: Oh, it’s gonna be next week.
PAPA: (smiles) Well, keep practicing and you’ll do just fine, my son.
FIEVEL: (smiles) Will do, Papa. I can hardly wait.
-Fievel goes over to Papa and hugs him, fade out-
-Fade-in to the next morning in the children’s room, Fievel sits on his footstool and opens a white box. Inside is a new baseball uniform and cap. He lifts the shirt out and holds it in front of his face. The shirt is white with dark blue collar and cuffs, printed on the front are the words: MOUSETOWN SCHOOLHOUSE, he turns it around to see NUMBER 7 on the back, his eyes widening in awe, he puts the white baseball cap on, it slips down for a second over his eyes like his regular hat, he pulls the brim back up. Crossfade to Fievel wearing his new uniform in front of the mirror. Papa walks up beside him.
FIEVEL: (looks up at him) Well, what do you think?
PAPA: You look good, Fievel, and you’re going to do well at the game too. Remember what I said.
FIEVEL: (nods) I sure will, Papa.
SCENE 4
-Crossfade to the day of the big game. Fievel is playing as the shortstop and he keeps his focus. It’s the ninth inning of the game, and the visiting team is up at bat, while the home team (which Fievel is on) is on defense playing on the field. Fievel’s family is there watching the game, and so are his friends, Tony and Bridget. Tiger is also watching the game from outside the field, looking over the bleachers. Elias and his family are there. The score so far is: Home team 2, Visiting team 2, with the home team catching up-
-The visiting team’s shortstop is up at bat. The home team’s pitcher throws the ball. Strike one. The catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher. Another pitch occurs. The batter hits the ball, which then rolls toward the right-fielder. He then throws the ball toward Fievel, who catches it. At the same time, the opposing player, who had hit the ball, stops at second base.-
ALBERT: Good job, Fievel. You’ll jolly-well show them, yet.
FIEVEL: (smiles) Hehe. Thanks, Albert. I’m doing my best.
--Fievel then throws the ball back to the pitcher. Cut to the crowd-
TONY: Go get ‘em, Fillie!
BRIDGET: Come on. You can do it.
-Cut back to the pitcher, facing the opposing team’s left-fielder, who is next up at bat. The pitcher warms up before throwing the ball. The batter hits it. Fievel manages to make a diving catch as he catches the ball with his mitt, resulting in the opposing team’s left-fielder to be out and the shortstop retreating back to first base-
-Cut to Mama and Papa with Tanya and baby Yasha-
MAMA: Papa, I do hope Fievel does well in the game.
PAPA: I’m sure he’ll be fine, Mama. He has been practicing.
-Cut back to Fievel on the field, staying focused. When the opposing team’s first baseman, who is next up, hits the ball, he runs to first base, then to second base. The shortstop is on third base. The visiting team’s second baseman is up at bat now. He hits a pop-up, and the ball lands in Fievel’s mitt. Fievel then throws the ball to second base, making the opposing team out. Everyone cheers-
FIEVEL: Hey, I did it!
FIRST BASEMAN MOUSE: Good job, Fievel! Keep it up.
FIEVEL: Will do!
TIGER: Way to go, buddy!
FIEVEL: (looks up at his cat friend) Thanks, Tiger!
SCENE 5
-The home team is up at bat, starting with the catcher. The pitcher on the visiting team throws the ball. The catcher at bat hits it. He then runs to first base. The next one up to bat is Albert, the 3rd baseman. The pitcher throws the ball…strike one. Albert practices his swing before the pitcher gets ready. Another pitch. Albert hits a foul ball. At last, he hits a line-drive, and runs to first base. Fievel waits patiently on the wooden bench for his turn to bat. At last, he was up to bat and remained focused. The pitcher throws. Strike one. The catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher. Another pitch. Strike two-
TANYA: Come on, Fievel! You can do it!
ALBERT: You’ve got this, little chap! Let’s make it home!
-Fievel smiles at Albert as well as his family and friends giving him encouragement, then focuses his eye on the ball. The pitcher thinks of a good pitch to try and strike Fievel out. Fievel keeps his focus. The pitcher throws the ball. Fievel hits the ball. The ball flies out of the ballfield.
FIEVEL: Hey! I hit it!
-Fievel runs the bases, while the crowd cheers including his family and friends. When Fievel reaches home plate, his team comes over to congratulate him.-
ALBERT: Well done, Fievel! I know you could do it!
FIEVEL: Thanks, Albert!
-Fievel’s family come over to congratulate him too-
PAPA: My Fievel! I’m proud of you.
FIEVEL: Thank you, Papa!
TIGER: Way to go, buddy!
-Tony and Bridget, as well as Elias and his own family join in on the congratulating-
BRIDGET: Maith thú!
ELIAS: That was a great game you played, Fievel!
TONY: I knew you could do it, Fillie!
FIEVEL: (giggles) Thanks, Tony!
BRIDGET: We’re very proud of you, Fievel. As I said before, when you put your mind to it, you can do anything, no matter how little you are.
FIEVEL: You betcha. (smiles)
Song: OPTIMISM FOR THE WIN
Play ball!
VERSE 1:
May the best team win!
As long as you have optimism,
You can do anything if you put your mind into it!
Come on, team, let’s play ball!
Just remember to give it your all!
Don’t give up, do your best,
Now’s the time to put your skills to the test!
Let’s go, let’s go! Slide into third!
Get on back to home base and we’ll be first!
CHORUS:
Because we have optimism for the win!
Potential is our thing!
We have confidence in our minds,
And great minds think alike!
Optimism for the win!
Hear the cheerful song we sing!
Thinking positive thoughts makes things turn out right!
VERSE 2:
Get your head in the game, don’t be afraid!
We’re ahead of the other team,
Our star player, Fievel, is living the dream!
Come on, come on, we’re almost there!
Throw the ball to shortstop over here!
Here comes Fievel running to home base!
Is he gonna make it?
Yes! He’s safe!
CHORUS
-song ends-
SCENE 6
-Crossfade to Fievel playing another game of catch in the middle of the alley, arranged like the baseball. Tony throws while Fievel, Tanya and Albert catch and run around from one set corner to the other, Bridget makes calls from the starting base and Tiger stands beyond to catch high flyers. Papa and Mama sit on a matchbox bench, watching proudly. Tony throws the wadded-up ball of newspaper to Fievel. Fievel catches it-
TONY: Good job, Filly!
ALBERT: Jolly good show, Fievel!
FIEVEL: Thanks! Are you ready, Tiger?
TIGER: You betcha, Fie!
FIEVEL: Okay! Catch! (throws the ball)
-Tiger runs back to catch it-
TIGER: I got it, Fie!
FIEVEL: You did it!
TANYA: Good catch, Tiger!
TIGER: (laughs) Thanks, Tannie! Catch! (throws the ball back to Tanya, who catches it) Hey, nice catch!
TANYA: (giggles) Ready, Fievel?
FIEVEL: Yes I am, Tanya!
TANYA: Catch! (throws the ball to her little brother who runs)
-Fievel makes a diving catch-
FIEVEL: (screams) WHOA!
-Tiger catches Fievel in his hands-
FIEVEL: Oof! Whew!
-Fievel’s family and friends were relieved to see him okay and they cheer for him-
TONY: (to Fievel and Tiger) Way to go!
ALBERT: Very brilliant, Fievel!
BRIDGET: That was a very good catch there!
-Fievel and Tiger smile-
TIGER: Are you okay, Fievel?
FIEVEL: (giggles) I’m okay. That was a great catch you did too! Thanks, Tiger!
(Fievel and Tiger laugh before they continue the game with Tanya, Tony and Albert)
FIEVEL: Ready, Albert?
ALBERT: Yes I am!
-Fievel throws the ball to Albert, who runs back and catches it-
ALBERT: Nice throw, Fievel!
FIEVEL: Thanks, Albert!
TONY: Great catch!
-cut to Papa and Mama smiling and conversing with each other-
PAPA: Our son has come a long way.
MAMA: Yes, he has, Papa. Fievel is a wonderfully fast learner. (chuckles)
PAPA: And he keeps making new friends, we should be proud of him for that too.
-cut to the final scene showing Fievel, Tiger, Tanya, Tony and Albert playing the game before the scene fades out-
