And I know that’s the whole point of why she did what she did. She knew that, as a young high-profile white European girl, her mistreatment would result in more uproar, and she intended to use that privilege to raise awareness of what is happening to Palestinians. That’s why the first thing she did after her release, when the press asked her to speak in detail about her own mistreatment, was to shift the conversation instead to how Israel continues to escalate its genocide against Palestinians.

I just wish people understood her message and gave the same energy toward helping Palestinians without waiting for a White Westerner to risk their life first.

I am doing the dishes. I am feeding the cats. I am tending to the infinite minutiae that make up life.

I am carrying the scars around. They are weeping blood. I am making dinner and laughing at memes. I am broken into a thousand pieces.

I am glued together again. I am watching the world burn and throwing dirt on whichever flames I can. I am missing you so much I cannot breathe. But I do. And then I scream.

And then the days repeat. Ordinary stacked on top of Horror, nestled next to grief.

Like how you look so pretty despite the suffering, I forget that it’s there

And what happens when you get rousted by the cops from whatever doorway or bench or dry corner you manage to find? You get thrown in the back of a squad car or forced out of an area by men with clubs and gas masks. Those treasures you grabbed? Those final few most important memories of your life— those are gone now. Forever. Now you’ve got the clothes you’re wearing, clothes you’ve probably been wearing and sleeping in for a couple of days

Do not attend Anime Iowa. This convention has staff that will not assist you if you have a problem. If you are a young woman who is sexually assaulted or harassed, they will blame you for it and if you try to go to the police to report what happened to you, they BAN you. They shush the victims of harassment, by removing them completely, to protect their image.

I’ve heard stories of three or four other women who’ve been banned for reporting sexual harassment to the con, the con doing nothing so they contact the police. They were banned by the convention for contacting the police, under the guise of “not being credible” and “False Reports to staff” even if they were sober and had numerous witnesses. 

Speaking out about this after over a decade. In 2011 I was at an unregistered room party (already a red flag) and was being fed alcohol despite my badge saying (at the time) I was 18. Eventually either too much alcohol happened or I was slipped something and woke up to two men on top of me.

One of the current (as in 2025 at the time of this writing) staff, Kerry David Lambrecht came to my "rescue" (he was one of the ones feeding me alcohol so I put it in quotes) and I naively started a relationship with the man that was nearly 20 years older than me at the time.
