Vine needs to go away.
Spent 20 minutes on Vine. I've seen embedded Vines before, but this is the first time I've spent any time whatsoever on the site.
Conclusion: What are all these children (who, by the way, think they are effin hilarious. SPOILERS: They aren't.), doing posting videos on this site? And why aren't their parents stopping this shit.
I want those 20 minutes back. And something nefarious done to the parents who let their kids do that. Especially that kid who was dancing and singing "If you want Ebola, go to Africa". Seriously, we need a Time Lord to go back and prevent those parents from breeding.

Fun fact which we totally should have mentioned before: while there is no historical evidence of boob armor (let alone battle bikinis) ever existing, dick armor was totally a thing!
Next time someone brings up “historical accuracy” as an argument for some ridiculous double standards in costume design, don’t forget to bring up this Renaissance fashion curiosity. And how conveniently it is never incorporated into male characters supposedly inspired by the era of codpiece popularity.

If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also
Matt 5:39
This specifically refers to a hand striking the side of a person’s face, tells quite a different story when placed in it’s proper historical context. In Jesus’s time, striking someone of a lower class ( a servant) with the back of the hand was used to assert authority and dominance. If the persecuted person “turned the other cheek,” the discipliner was faced with a dilemma. The left hand was used for unclean purposes, so a back-hand strike on the opposite cheek would not be performed. Another alternative would be a slap with the open hand as a challenge or to punch the person, but this was seen as a statement of equality. Thus, by turning the other cheek the persecuted was in effect putting an end to the behavior or if the slapping continued the person would lawfully be deemed equal and have to be released as a servant/slave.

THAT makes a lot more sense, now, thank you.

I can attest to the original poster’s comments. A few years back I took an intensive seminar on faith-based progressive activism, and we spent an entire unit discussing how many of Jesus’ instructions and stories were performative protests designed to shed light on and ridicule the oppressions of that time period as a way to emphasize the absurdity of the social hierarchy and give people the will and motivation to make changes for a more free and equal society.
For example, the next verse (Matthew 5:40) states “And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.” In that time period, men traditionally wore a shirt and a coat-like garment as their daily wear. To sue someone for their shirt was to put them in their place - suing was generally only performed to take care of outstanding debts, and to be sued for one’s shirt meant that the person was so destitute the only valuable thing they could repay with was their own clothing. However, many cultures at that time (including Hebrew peoples) had prohibitions bordering on taboo against public nudity, so for a sued man to surrender both his shirt and his coat was to turn the system on its head and symbolically state, in a very public forum, that “I have no money with which to repay this person, but they are so insistent on taking advantage of my poverty that I am leaving this hearing buck-ass naked. His greed is the cause of a shameful public spectacle.”
All of a sudden an action of power (suing someone for their shirt) becomes a powerful symbol of subversion and mockery, as the suing patron either accepts the coat (and therefore full responsibility as the cause of the other man’s shameful display) or desperately chases the protester around trying to return his clothes to him, making a fool of himself in front of his peers and the entire gathered community.
Additionally, the next verse (Matthew 5:41; “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.”) was a big middle finger to the Romans who had taken over Judea and were not seen as legitimate authority by the majority of the population there. Roman law stated that a centurion on the march could require a Jew (and possibly other civilians as well, although I don’t remember explicitly) to carry his pack at any time and for any reason for one mile along the road (and because of the importance of the Roman highway system in maintaining rule over the expansive empire, the roads tended to be very well ordered and marked), however hecould not require any service beyond the next mile marker. For a Jewish civilian to carry a centurion’s pack for an entire second mile was a way to subvert the authority of the occupying forces. If the civilian wouldn’t give the pack back at the end of the first mile, the centurion would either have to forcibly take it back or report the civilian to his commanding officer (both of which would result in discipline being taken against the soldier for breaking Roman law) or wait until the civilian volunteered to return the pack, giving the Judean native implicit power over the occupying Roman and completely subverting the power structure of the Empire. Can you imagine how demoralizing that must have been for the highly ordered Roman armies that patrolled the region?
Jesus was a pacifist, but his teachings were in no way passive. There’s a reason he was practically considered a terrorist by the reigning powers, and it wasn’t because he healed the sick and fed the hungry.

So let me get this straight, in Monopoly if you give one player more money to start out it’s “unfair” but if you do it in real life it’s “capitalism”?
You know what, I’m going to tell you guys a story.
In my Sociology class a few semesters ago, our prof had us break off into groups and, much to our naive joy, began distributing Monopoly boards! We had no idea what was going on but yay! Games! Of course, once our group, and a number of others, got the board we began to work at setting up and distributing the money…
until suddenly our prof told us to put the money down and pick up the dice.
“Roll the dice and sort yourselves from highest to lowest,” our teacher commanded. "Now, the highest number is the upper class. The next one is upper middle class. The next two or three are middle class. The last person is in poverty.“
Well, as the person who rolled a two this was startling and not wholly welcome news.
From that point the game changed entirely. We had to hand out the money so that the “upper class” had this fucking mountain, and then less for upper middle, even less for middle, and I didn’t get any triple digit bills. We would all collect different amounts from passing go as well.
The biggest change though? Going to jail. Upper class didn’t. Period. Upper middle class could go but they only had to stay for one turn or they could immediately pay their way out. Middle class had some pretty easy guidelines for when they could pay to get out. As lower class, it was really easy for me to wind up in jail and REALLY hard to get out. But since I was working with so little money when everyone else had so much I was in jail all the time because there was no “game over”. If I couldn’t pay I had to go to jail for a certain period of time. I had to take out loans with interest I could never pay back just to get out only to wind up back in it again, rolling dice turn after turn hoping to be able to get out.
It was simultaneously the most enlightening and most awful game I had ever played. I was bored and frustrated and a little terrified about it all. And it wasn’t only me. I would never win, I sort of accepted this, but it was amazing how the middle classes reacted as well. They were stressed. Because they were always that close to either being able to one-up the upper class or from crashing into poverty with me. They had to fight constantly just to stay in the middle.
(I should also mention that the upper class player in one group felt so bad for the lower income players that they ended up overhauling their entire game and creating a “socialist” society instead. I’m not sure how our teacher felt about that one.)
Worth stressing this is entirely in the spirit of the original designer’s aims for Monopoly.
Monopoly’s original form of The Landlord Game which was explicitly designed to teach people about the unfairness of rent systems. To quote from the wikipedia entry, just as it’s the easiest source to hand…
Magie designed the game to be a “practical demonstration of the present system of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences”.[2] She based the game on the economic principles of Georgism, a system proposed byHenry George, with the object of demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants. She knew that some people could find it hard to understand why this happened and what might be done about it, and she thought that if Georgist ideas were put into the concrete form of a game, they might be easier to demonstrate.
When the usual suspects start making “don’t bring politics into games” noises, I roll my eyes pretty hard. They have no idea of the history of the form.
And then the Parker Brothers pushed her out and stole the game thereby demonstrating exactly what capitalism is

Learning about writing conferences, tribes, and myself
Yesterday I attended the opening of the of the NW Wisconsin Writers Festival and U-Fest. It’s a fledgling conference, currently in its second year, held at UW-Barron. It has recently become a goal of mine to start attending more writing conferences/festivals in order to build my presence and contacts. Attending this conference, I learned a couple of things. The first being, rural Wisconsin writers are not my tribe.
Now, before you think I’m going to go on some sort of soapbox diatribe where I look down on this conference and these people, I want to be clear that this is not my intent or what I mean. There was plenty I appreciated about my experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the Red Barn Players Theater Showcase. I also enjoyed keynote speaker, Nickolas Butler’s, reading. And I flat out support the participation and fostering of the arts, which is the point of the festival in the first place. If you like literary fiction and poetry, especially writing influenced by the landscape and experiences of small town America, then this festival is for you.
This is where I come back to my first point: despite the fact that I grew up in rural Wisconsin, rural Wisconsin is not my writing tribe. These people were pleasant, and in their own way, inspiring to be around (in general as people who participate and pursue the arts). But when I was met with blank stares, after dropping names like Patrick Rothfuss, Mary Robinette Kowal, and Brandon Sanderson, it was obvious that our writing interests were just too different in order to be useful to each other as a source of excitement and inspiration.
As David Farland put it in a recent writing tip: “writers need other writers. They need like-minded people to learn from, to share with, and to relate to.” And while I connected with these people on terms of writing in general, I couldn’t connected on terms of our writing interests. How can I be a source of inspiration to them, when I’ve never even heard of writer’s they were excited about? How can I learn from them, when the most recent fantasy novel they read was Lord of the Rings?
Obviously these people have found their tribe; I’m just not a good fit for it. I wish U-Fest a long and inspiring run for years to come.
The second thing I learned is that I need to learn to be comfortable talking about myself. I don’t mean that in a dominating the conversation type of way. I realized that it’s hard for me to be a source of anything, to anyone, if they have to fight to get every single sentence out of me. It occurs to me, that I might even have gotten more out of the conference, if I had been more willing to discuss my writing interests, even if they didn’t align with the majority opinion at this festival.
So for now, I’ll sit back, relax, and internalize what I’ve learned and take that with me to the next conference I attend.

MERLIN KNEW ABOUT AMERICA
Reading Merlin's Prophecies in the Histories of the Kings of Britain by Geoffry of Monmouth, and I come cross the following lines:
"Albany shall be moved unto wrath, and calling unto them that are at her side shall busy her only in the shedding of blood. A bridle-bit shall be set in her jaws that shall be forged in the Bay of Armorica. This shall the Eagle of the broken covenant gild over, and the Eagle shall rejoice in her third nesting."
Bay of Armorica? Eagle of the broken covenant? = AMERICA???
Guys. Guys. I think I'm onto something here. Give me a few weeks, I think I can mold this into a successful campaign for presidency.
You can just start calling me “Chosen One” now.

Current Addiction: Fantasy Life for 3DS
I have a weakness for simulation games; I can spend hours happily designing and arranging things. I also have a thing for RPGs. When you combine the two... I end up in video game heaven. Animal Crossing. Harvest Moon. And now I can add Fantasy Life to that list.
You begin the game by choosing one of twelve “lives” (basically your main occupation in the world), ranging from Paladin to Tailor. You are forced to play through the intro as your chosen Life, but once completed, you may change your life whenever you like, except when you are in the middle of a story quest. I chose Paladin as my first Life, and I’m finding there is a lof of fighting. I am intrigued enough by the Life system that I want to eventually go back and choose something like Tailor as my first life and see how, if at all, it affects the story. If you want to be stingy with your in-game money (as I do), some of the lives, such as Blacksmith and Carpenter, feed off of each other and into other Lives, such as Paladin. I’ve spent a lot of time building up my skills in multiple Lives, so I don’t have to pay for armor and weapons as a Paladin. Then again, I enjoy that sort of stuff.
There’s a lot about this game that reminds me of Animal Crossing. You can buy a home and furnish it with furnishings you by in-game, or can make as a Carpenter. And you can run errands and quests for the citizens of the kingdom. I really wish the game had a collection display mechanic, a la, the museum in Animal Crossing. There are a lot of items in the game and feel lacking a collection mechanic was a missed opportunity.
The storyline is cheesy but doesn’t take itself seriously. Any “mysteries” laid out in the plot, are obvious to the gamer (well, to me, at least); Twenty hours into the game, I have yet to encounter plot developments that surprise me. But given the overall “cutesy” design of the game, I doubt intricate plot structure was one of the goals of the developers. Some gamers may find this to the games detriment. Then again, my guess is that those gamers probably never intend to pick up this game.
I intend to put many more hours into the game; I’m a completionist at heart, so I’ve got lots to do. If you like simulation RPGs, I would definitely recommend picking this up.
