I really need to finish E33but it still cracks me up that Sciel’s first action upon believing she is the only surviving member of her expedition is to join a fighting ring.
Oh and Lune. I remembered how she didn’t bat an eye for Leo when a nevron killed him. She moved forward because she knew that if she didn’t they would be dead as well. Also, she hadn’t made friends really, she tells this to Sciel later on. It actually could be said that because Gustave’s worry that that man is killed: he managed to run from it only to startle when Gustave calls him and gets caught. Was it not for Lune, they would be dead as well.
But she doesn’t know what to do when Gustave dies. Sciel has to calm her down when she starts to spiral out of control, because she was finally making bonds with people. Again, she finally feels real loss after her parents gommage when someone she was close to leaves. She was keeping her distance to protect herself yet she was hurt by it at the same time, because she felt like a tool in the way her parents raised her. No gaining in eithee opening up or closing her emotions inside herself.
She finally made friends and got close to people. She was happy to find gestrals, she got faith in the future once Maelle is revealed as a paintress. Only for one of them to betray them. Twice. The glare he gives him both times kills me everytime.

God Lune’s life sucks so bad. The focus gets passed to Verso for obvious reasons but her life sucks so bad
Like imagine every moment of your existence since you were four years old being a contingency plan, a means to an end. While your two older siblings got to go off and be people you were a stepping stone that your parents laid out with meticulous care. And then they die and they fail and you have this resounding drive that you will make it worth something. You find the last remnants of your mother‘s voice and it’s just an order that you must succeed or there wouldn’t have been a point to any of this. That conviction is so ingrained to your character that one of your revival/healing lines is an apology for making a mistake and getting hurt and a declaration that it won’t happen again like you’re more afraid of the thought of failure than death or pain
And then you do succeed with the one thing your parents dreamed for you and complete the one purpose that’s been set out for you and then it’s ripped away. Then the moment you make peace with the fact that you could be your own person that you don’t have to be a means to an end, the person who said that to you who was perhaps the first person you felt so you as you betrays you - twice. And once again you have served the purpose of being a steppingstone of a backup plan and none of it mattered
This story is not about you and it was never about you but you were a loadbearing driving force of moving the plot along. All you get for recompense is a final glance and a muttered I’m sorry before the future you dare to dream of slips out of your hands
