The smell of greasy chicken and french fries flood your senses as you open the box of freshly fried fast food placed on the table in between you and your date for today, Itoshi Rin. The professional soccer star famous for his destruction on the field, and his unwillingness to foster any human connection off of it.
How your team had managed to convince him to appear on your “date” was a mystery to you, but you knew better than to turn down a chance at interviewing a striker from the Blue Lock experiment. Especially one in such high demand as Rin.
With the cameras rolling, you clear your throat and give Rin your best awkward smile, ready for the show to begin. “Hi.”
He doesn’t reply, instead glancing between you and the food in front of him, a slight look of disdain never leaving his face as he simply nods in acknowledgement.

“I hear you’re a Virgo,” you state, taking a fry and slowly nibbling on it. Rin makes a face at the mention of astrology, but you don’t let it deter you. “They’re known for being practical and meticulous. A logical perfectionist. Basically, everything you’re not.”
At your bluntness, he lets out a quiet snort. You hide a smile. No one is immune to this ridiculous bit of a date. He’d crack soon enough.

You almost sigh at his lack of interest, but you don’t genuinely take his attitude to heart. Reo was a great guest for this date, but even you could sense Rin’s personality was completely different. The date was definitely something out of his comfort zone.
“I hear you have a brother,” you ask chirpily.
Given your extensive research, you know the eldest Itoshi brother was a sore spot for Rin, but from what you could tell, it seems their hatred has dissolved into more of a rivalry. Totally normal sibling stuff. Which means, totally fair game for you.
Rin wrinkles his nose. “Yes.”
“Do you talk to him?”
“Not frequently, but yes.”
You grin. “Then, maybe, you could put in a good word for me?” you ask, giving Rin the puppy dog eyes. “I’ve been trying to ask Sae out for years now but, well, he hasn’t answered any of my messages.”
Rin snorts, shaking his head incredulously. “You’re asking about my brother during our date?”
You pause as you squirt ketchup out onto a napkin, the uncomfortable noises of flatulence from the half-empty bottle filling the silence at the table.
He shuffles in his chair.
Dipping a fry into the ketchup, you plop it into your mouth before smiling at him. “So now this is a date?”
Rin’s cheeks heat up once more and you decide that is your favorite reaction of his. “No. Whatever.”
“Then will you give Sae my contact information?”
“No.”
“Isagi Yoichi?”
“Definitely no.”
“Shidou Ryusei.”
“Never.”
“Oh! How about Kunigami—”
“Just eat your fries already.”
You close your mouth and obediently dip more fries into your multitude of sauces. You sniffed haughtily, fanning yourself with your free hand. “Jeez. How did you know I like being bossed around like that?”
Rin’s face flares as he glares daggers at you. “Shut up.”
With a giggle, you shoot him a wink. “You’re a fun date, Rin.”
“Is this done yet?”
“Nope!”
Your time together is reaching its limit and you decide on one last question to wrap this date up.
“If you win the U-20 World Cup this year, will you dedicate your win to me?”
“No.”
You nod understandingly. “Totally get it. You probably have a list of people to go through first.”
He considers it for a moment before agreeing.
“Can I at least be on the list?”
“Okay.”
You cheer, cracking open a new soda and taking a drink in celebration. “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to get this far. Where am I on the list? Second?”
Rin shakes his head.
“Third?”
He gives you a look as if to say, “Really?”
“How about twelfth?” you say sheepishly.
“That could be doable.”
“That’s a lot of world cups for you to win before I get my shout out…” you murmur, still in jest. “I guess that means I’ll just have to be rooting for you the whole time!”
“Even if Sae is on the opposite team?” he grits out his brother’s name.
You grin at the sweet taste of sibling rivalry. “Well, I haven’t met him yet. So, yes. I’d root for you even then.”
Rin folds his arms but nods his head in acknowledgment. “Okay. Maybe I’ll move you up two spots.”
“Make it three and you have a deal. I’ll even bring you fries and chicken after you win.”
He grimaces, glancing at his untouched box of food. It’s certainly not the healthy meal made by a private chef he was probably used to. “Or, don’t bring me this…food…and you’ll move up four spots.”
“Deal!”
You offer your hand out for him to shake and, to your surprise, he doesn’t leave you hanging. His hand wraps around yours as he shakes it. Rin’s fingers are cold and slightly calloused, but they’re softer than you would expect.
With a small smile on your face, the date with Rin comes to an end and all you can think is… Sae definitely has to be your next interview after this.

It was another day at The Flagship and you could honestly say you had never been bored since you started working here.
Between listening to countless stories from adventurers all across Teyvat, to breaking up a handful of bar fights when people had just a bit too much to drink, you never knew what the next day would bring. You met dangerous folk from the Fatui, sketchy supporters of the Columbina, and even handsome knights from a region far away.
It was a job in a dangerous place, yet you wouldn’t change it for the world.
Your favorite person you met during your time here would have to be none other than a certain blond-haired, blue-eyed knight that had a strange obsession with dandelion wine.
“Hey stranger,” you greeted, waltzing over to his seat to take his order. “Been a while since I’ve seen you.”
“Good evening to my favorite waitress,” he said with a dashing grin, one side lifted higher than the other. “I’ve missed you.”
You laughed at his bold declarations, no longer troubled by his forward teasing. Besides, you figured he was only joking around anyway.
“How many other girls have you said that to this week, Varka?” you asked, placing your hand on your hip as you looked at him.
“This week? None.”
“Last week?”
Varka chuckled before changing the topic. “How have you been? I haven’t had the chance to drop by The Flagship in a while. Run into any trouble while I was gone?”
You shook your head. “Just another wasted Fatui starting a fight I had to stop. Business as usual.”
“You didn’t get hurt, did you?” he frowned, eyes scanning your body from head-to-toe.
Typically, the image he gave off was one of a carefree tavern-goer, but in moments such as these, you were reminded the man in front of you was the titan of the Knights of Favonius people told stories about. The stories so grand they even reached the ears of the citizens of Nod-Krai.
“No injuries for me,” you promised, stretching our your arms and wiggling your fingers to show him everything was still intact.
“Good.”
This time, you studied him. The scars on his face only drew more attention to his chiseled jaw, though you fought the urge to ask him how he got it. His pale hands were hardened and calloused from his countless fights and battles. But there, on Varka’s forearm, you spotted a fresh cut amongst his other scars.
Your lips became downturned. “It looks like you can’t say the same.” Hesitantly, you reached out to gesture to his new injury. It was small and you could tell it had been properly cleaned, but it was certainly still there. “What happened here?”
“Just got into a small scuffle,” he said sheepishly. “But don’t worry about me. You should see the other guy.”
His attempt to cheer you up worked and you cracked a grin. “How ominous. Perhaps it’s good I can’t see him,” you said. “Anyway, what can I get for you today? Some wine, perhaps?”
“You always seem to read my mind.”
“You always seem to want wine,” you corrected.
“Fair point.”
Soon after, Varka recited his order to you and you excused yourself to help out some other guests. Unfortunate as it was, you couldn’t spend your entire time talking to the pretty blond man. Still, throughout your shift, you found yourself throwing spare glances his way, and being pleasantly surprised that he would wink at you in return.
What a libertine, you laughed to yourself.
The rest of the night went by without any hiccups. You waited tables and served some other familiar faces. You were about ready to head home for the night when a particularly large and rowdy group entered the tavern.
“Oh, joy,” you muttered under your breath, desperately looking at the bar to see if another worker was ready to take over your shift, but the only person there simply looked away when you made eye contact. You groaned, forcing a bright smile on your face though the only thing you wanted to do was get some rest.
“Hey, can we get some help over here?” It hadn’t even been a full minute since they have taken their seat, and they were already waving you over.
“Of course, be right there!” you chirped.
A short man in with an unruly mustache huffed. “Took you long enough.”
Another person in the group, this one tall and lanky, nodded in agreement, glaring as he looked around the place.
Ignoring their comments, you continued on cheerily, “Here’s the menu. It’s short, but feel free to look over it for as long as you need. In the meantime, can I get you started with some drinks—”
“Don’t need this stupid menu,” mustache scoffed as he shoved it off the table. “I know what I want. Fontanian Foie Gras.”
You blinked at his stupidity. Did it look like this casual tavern served something like Foie Gras? The Fontanian kind no less?
Smiling, you said, “For that, I recommend you go to Hotel Debord in Fontaine. Amazing place, so I hear. Unfortunately we don’t serve that here, but we do have Sweet Madame and Golden Fried Chicken! Delicacies in their own right.”
“Are you deaf? I said I want Foie Gras.”
Patience wearing thin, the fake smile on your face slowly dropped as you folded your arms across your chest. “And are you deaf? I said we don’t serve that.”
His pasty complexion turned an ugly reddish purple at your words but you held your ground. If he couldn’t handle being spoken to in a such a way, perhaps he shouldn’t have talked to you like that in the first place.
“Who do you think you are talking to me in that way? Do you even know who I am?” the little ringleader of the group spat.
You could safely say you didn’t know who he was. Nor did you care to. All you cared about was kicking this group out without causing more disturbance to the other guests. Sure, The Flagship was no Hotel Debord, but you weren’t completely classless here.
“Hey! I’m talking to you, lady. Where’s the boss around here? Looks like someone needs to be put in her place,” he sneered.
Just as you were about to sigh and forcibly drag him out by the ear, you felt a commanding, yet warm presence behind you.
You glanced back briefly through the corner of your eye. Varka.
A feeling of gratefulness filled you, but you couldn’t help but sigh. Bothering the Knight of Favonius with such trivial matters was the last thing you wanted to do tonight.
“What’s going on over here?” asked Varka, his brows furrowed in such a way that showed you a deadly look on his face you’ve never witnessed before.
Jumping up from his seat, the man with the mustache grinned as he stood beside Varka. “Oh, thank the Archons! Are you the owner of this place? This waitress here has been nothing but rude to us since we came in! As loyal customers, we demand you do something about it.”
You could hardly hold back your scoff. Loyal customers? You’ve never seen them before, and you would certainly never see them again, if you had any say in it.
“Is that so?” said Varka, voice low and slow. Before anyone could answer, he continued, “Because it seems to me, you all were the ones being rude and bothersome to this lovely waitress who is only trying to do her job.”
His voice was stern and expression flat as he took the smallest step in front of you. A gesture that was so subtle and barely there, but it was enough. Feeling shielded by his large stature, you fought the urge to stick your tongue out at the mustache man in front of you.
Blanching, the leader of the group puffed up his chest and barked out, “Excuse me? Are you an incompetent fool too? Do you even know who I am?”
“A pest,” was Varka’s only retort.
Before you knew it, a giggle escaped you as you covered your hand with your mouth. With wide eyes you looked at Varka, and only then did his expression soften with a chuckle.
“That was a good one, wasn’t it?”
“Amazing. I’ll have to steal that one myself,” you said, completely ignoring the pissed off group of men at the table next to you.
Shocked and furious, the man with the mustache looked between the two of you in disbelief. He opened his mouth to yell some more, but before a sound could come out of his mouth, Varka held his hand up to silence him.
“Don’t bother wasting anymore breath,” said Varka, the soft expression he hand on his face with you hardening to one of deadly intent once more. “I’d recommend you and your friends leave now before I take matters into my own hands.”
“Is that supposed to be a threat?” the lanky man shouted from his seat. “What a joke!”
Varka sighed, losing his patience. Without saying a word, he summoned his claymore, sizeable and bright red. Even without him holding it, the ability to wield such a weapon alone was impressive enough.
“If you guys would be so kind as to follow me outside before we begin,” he said, not a hint of jest in his tone. “Wouldn’t want to cause unnecessary mess for Y/N to clean up.”
Once the men seemed to realize Varka was, in fact, completely serious, their faces began to clam up.
A red-haired guy who hadn’t spoken before squeaked out, “Guys, let’s just go to another tavern.”
The two men sitting next to him nodded feverishly.
With the color drained from his face at the sight of the large weapon in front of him, the leader of the group hesitantly agreed. “Whatever. Let’s go. Staying in a trashy place like this will only taint us as well.”
He scurried out of The Flagship without looking back, the rest of his group running right behind him. Varka clenched his jaw in annoyance at their last words, but you lightly touched his hand that was gripping his claymore and he relaxed in an instant, unsummoning his weapon with a forced laugh.
“Sorry you had to see that,” he said, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck.
You waved him off as if it was nothing. “We’re in Nod-Krai. It’s not exactly the safest place, as you’re aware.”
Varka nodded solemnly. “It will be. Soon.”
“You sound so certain.”
He spares you a small smile. “Because I am. But until then, would you allow me the honor of escorting you home? Your shift was supposed to be over already, correct?”
“Yes,” you sighed, ready to let your hair down and take a nice, warm shower. “But you don’t have to walk me home. It’s not a far walk from here.”
“Perhaps, but it wouldn’t surprise me if those cowards were lying in wait out there.”
You frowned at the thought. He could be right. They did seem slimy enough to do such a thing. “Maybe so, but I can take them on! I may not have a claymore. Or a vision… But I have a mean kick!”
“I’m sure you do,” Varka chuckled, assessing your legs before nodding in approval. “Can I still walk you home? If not as a bodyguard, then as a companion? Archon only knows how bored I’ll be until the next time I see you. Let’s savor our time together a little longer.”
Sweet talker, you thought to yourself, but that didn’t stop the heat you felt rising to your cheeks. Who knew how many others he had said this to. But you supposed that, right now, it didn’t matter. You also wanted to enjoy some time with him before he disappears again for who knows how long.
“Okay,” you agreed after only a moment’s hesitation. “I’d love it if you could accompany me home.”
“I knew you would miss me too much.”
“I’m sure you would miss me more,” you teased.
“You’re right.”
Any hint of joking in his voice was gone, causing you to pause as you gave him a sideways glance. Not wanting to incorrectly read into things, you didn’t dwell too much on your observation and simply let him out of the tavern into the cold streets of Nod-Krai.
“My home is just down this path and to the left,” you said, walking beside Varka as you navigated your way through the dimly-lit area. “I told you it’s not very far.”
He shrugged, offering you his arm to hold. Gently, you placed a hand on his bicep, your grip so soft you were almost hovering. “Only a few more moments with you is better than none.”
You laughed to fight away the embarrassment, the warmth of his body drawing you away from the cold winds of Nod-Krai. “You know, Varka, one day that mouth of yours will get you into trouble.”
“How so?”
“You’ll say all those things, and one day, someone won’t be able to tell it’s a joke.”
Varka inhaled sharply, then coughed. As if your words had taken him aback.
Concerned, you stopped in your tracks to look at him. “Are you okay?”
He coughed once more, clearing his throat. “Yes, I was just surprised, is all.”
“Surprised?”
“That you think I’m just joking,” he said with a laugh.
Avoiding his gaze, you began walking again once you realized he was alright. This time, you refrained from placing your hand back on his arm. It would only make you more confused.
“I mean it,” Varka stated with conviction. “Though our times together may be fleeting, our interactions are worthwhile— Your presence is worthwhile. Why do you think I keep coming back to The Flagship all this time?”
“Because of our amazing food and customer service?”
He let out a hearty chuckle, shaking his head. “Who’s the one joking now?”
“Sorry,” you said sheepishly. “In all honesty, whenever I see you at the tavern, it makes my whole day better. I enjoy our little moments together, too.”
Varka smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. I’ll be in Nod-Krai for quite some time longer. I’ll continue frequenting the tavern until all of Nod-Krai is safe.”
You bumped your shoulder against his, playfully. “You keep saying stuff like that, but what exactly are you planning?”
“It’s a bit too long of a story for an hour this late in the day,” he said, eyeing the structure in front of the two of you. Your home. “When I see you next time, I’ll have more details for you.”
“Okay, mysterious stranger,” you teased. “I’ll look forward to your next visit then.”
Varka stopped in front of your doorway, looking as if he wanted to say more, but simply smiling instead. Under the dim lights from your front door, you caught him staring intently at your lips before his eyes flitted back up to meet yours.
He cleared his throat and gave you a sideways grin. “Since you’re home safe, I’ll be off now. Stay out of trouble until I visit again, okay?”
“No promises,” you said, noticing just how soft and pink Varka’s lips looked. Certainly inviting. But like him, you refrained. The timing just wasn’t quite right. Maybe next time. “I’ll see you soon. Don’t get any more injuries while you’re gone!”
With a chuckle he retorted, “No promises about that. But I can promise I’ll return to you intact. For the most part.”
“That’s not very reassuring!”
“I’ll stay safe,” he said more certainly this time, giving you one last smile before waving his hand in farewell. “Goodnight, now, Y/N. Until we meet again.”
“Until then,” you agreed, raising your hand to wish him goodbye.
You watched as his figure disappeared from your sight before closing the door to your home. With Varka no longer beside you, you were instantly reminded of the harsh weather of Nod-Krai.
