Every culture has their "Stuff In Dough", what've been your favourite meals that you've encountered that fall into this category?
Stuff in dough is, now that you mention it, a common feature across Tamrielic cuisines. Whether it's salty or sweet, fried or baked, these are some of my favourite doughy treats.
Altmer
The race that dislikes anything deep fried isn't exactly producing oily doughnuts, but baked dough is a different story. The High Elves are excellent bakers and their repertoire for stuff in dough is unparalleled. The city of Alinor is famed for the invention of sweet, fruit-filled pies made from a fluffy and slightly chewy rice flour-based dough. These palm-sized pies are gently baked in open pans, drizzled in honey and crushed macadamias, and are either eaten plain on the go or served with ice cream.
Argonians
Corn dough is a cornerstone of Argonian cooking, and it is indeed used to batter many things! For travellers who aren't as keen on dishes like snails wrapped in boiled corn dough, there's always corn-battered fried frog legs with honey-butter sauce! These fluffy bites are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and definitely my favourite way of cooking frog legs. They come in heaped plates of 20 in Lilmoth!
Bosmer
Minced meat or sausage meat is used by the Bosmer the way the rest of us use flour doughs. One of my guilty pleasures is a type of cheese-filled sausage doughnut that's cooked in hot lard. A small block of cheese is packed into seasoned sausage meat, which is then rolled in crispy crackling like panko crumbs, then deep fried. Terrible for the health, but so good.
Bretons
I've previously mentioned the little doughnuts on sticks beloved by myself and the general population of High Rock. However, all pales in comparison to a frozen custard profiterole. A lightly baked ball of fluffy dough is filled with vanilla custard, before a quick deep fry. It's then frozen, and served with a drizzle of hot chocolate fudge or butterscotch sauce. Yum!
Dunmer
The best example of stuff in dough while in Morrowind is a traditional guar pasty. These are more or less similar to a regular pasty, although the dough is made from ash yam flour, giving it a distinct flavour. It's filled with tender chunks of stewed guar with comberries, scuttle, and lots of fresh chili.
Imperials
There's nothing that says Cyrodiilic street food quite like a stuffed dough ball! About the size of a pomegranate, these hefty balls of stretchy wheat dough are filled with ingredients and sauces of your choice, and are then shallow fried in hot olive oil until fluffy but just crisp on the outside. I like mine stuffed with seasoned arborio rice, minced beef, cheese, chili sauce, and mushrooms. These are a sit down meal because of the size, so be sure to bring a friend to share your dough ball with!
Khajiit
One of my favourite comfort food dishes of all time is a good old deep fried fried chicken wrap. Yes, the wrap itself is battered and fried! Chunks of spicy fried chicken, dried tomatoes, salsa, and corn are wrapped in a wheat or corn flatbread, lightly battered, and deep fried until golder brown and crispy. You didn't know you needed twice-fried chicken in your life, but now you do.
Nords
Potato flour is excellent for making Nord-style dough, and in Skyrim we enjoy making a small, bite-size version of our famous crostatas. Wrapping the crostatas in extra layers of pastry dough (almost like a pie, really) helps seal in the moisture and flavour of the filling, which is usually comberry, apple, or jazbay grapes. Don't forget to try my Apple Dumplings for a taste of something similar!
Orcs
Breaded, battered rabbit is a classic Orcish dish, which combines the tenderness of fresh rabbit with the moreish crunch of fried dough. A whole rabbit is dipped in a thick layer of seasoned wheat batter, rolled in breadcrumbs, and fried until dark brown. It's served as is, with a big helping of mashed potatoes and strong peppercorn gravy. I've heard other races call this dish a waste of good rabbit, but dough stuffed with rabbit is hardly a bad thing!
Redguards
Despite the searing weather of the Alik'r, Redguards do love their hot doughy foods. A famous dessert is a sweet paste made of figs, honey, banana and nuts, which is shaped into a log, dipped in a thick cornmeal batter and fried. It is served warm, with cardamom and date buttercream and a dark treacle drizzle.

So you know how it's human nature to do really stupid shit just to see what our bodies will let us get away with, including dumb food challenges? What kinda dumb extreme food challenges do the people of tamriel get up to?
I'm of the belief that stupidity extends to all things, right down to food itself. While I strongly suggest not trying any of these challenges yourself, you're always welcome to watch people making a fool of themselves by doing...
Altmer
The prim and proper High Elves don't so much participate in dumb food challenges, but they are competitive when it comes to their food and wine. Gastronomy gurus in Summerset often "duel" each other with blind tastings to demonstrate one's superior palate, from types of rice to extremely specific vintages. It's pompous, pretentious, and downright ridiculous to an oafish nebarra like myself, but as a chef, I can say they're arses.
Argonians
Black Marsh is home to a whole host of delicious seafood, but Argonians like to test their luck with what they call Sithis' Kiss, made from the flesh of the poisonous Michinitl. The fish is served raw, and sliced thinly with expert precision. While preparing the fish properly removes the dangerous toxins, unskilled chefs have unintentionally killed many a tourist and fellow Argonian alike with this dish.
Bosmer
The Wood Elves are brilliant hunters, but sometimes take things a little far in the name of a meal (unthrappa being a case in point). There's a common saying that the more dangerous the catch, the better the meat tastes, and this has led some to participate in ridiculous, and at times disastrous hunts. One story that haunts me is a hunting party that accidentally led a wild timber mammoth through a village, where it gored an old woman and grievously injured many others. Pick on something your own size!
Bretons
Rivenspire hosts an annual competition where a huge prize wheel of sharp Northpoint cheese is rolled down a very steep hill, and Men and Mer alike roll themselves after it to the finish line. The first to reach the bottom of the hill wins the cheese, but injuries aplenty occur during the cheese race- I will personally stick to buying my Red Northpoint from the store!
Dunmer
For some reason, the Dark Elves quite enjoy eating live things, and sometimes with dire consequences. It has been a trend on Vvardenfell to catch small octopuses, which are served live with a dip of salty saltrice sauce, pickled comberry, and saltrice vinegar. As you can imagine, the application of sauce generally incites rage in the octopus, which will sometimes choke its eater to death from inside the esophagus. Please don't do this, and eat your food dead.
Imperials
Wine is one of Cyrodiil's major exports, and the Province is swimming in it- literally. Wine-diving is a sport where a bunch of grapes are tied to the bottom of a vat of wine, and contestants must swim to the bottom and bring the grapes back to the surface with their teeth alone. The winner is whoever does this is the shortest time. As the hands are often tied behind the back to prevent cheating, this game has also led to a boozy demise for a few poor souls, who presumably died doing what they love: being submerged in wine.
Khajiit
It's no secret that Elsweyr cuisine is often loaded with chilis, and the Khajiit love challenging themselves and their guts with increasingly spicy chili eating contests. Participants are each given a glass of milk with moon sugar and are given up to ten different levels of fiery Oblivion to pass through. You don't normally win a prize beyond being known as that crazy jeek who can breathe fire, but it's a reputation that might just be worth the pain (not that I'll ever come close to winning).
Nords
You've heard about the famed eating contests of Skyrim, but do you really know about it? Participants starve themselves for days before the contest, or stretch their stomachs by gorging themselves, or just have naturally voracious appetites. There are only two rules: no throwing up, and no cheating, especially with magic. Everything else is in the hands of Ysmir the second you take a bite of turkey thigh. Only the truly gluttonous will win an eating contest among Nords. Attempt at your own discretion.
Orcs
The tuskiest of Orcs often step up to the plate when it comes to eating dangerously, but at the expense of one's teeth. While it's not common, bored Orcs have been known to challenge each other to chewing and swallowing increasingly hard foods, like tough jerky to whole solid dried bonito blocks. Unless you have teeth of steel and a stomach of malachite, it's not advisable to attempt this.
Redguards
The Alik'r is home to many dangerous creatures, including vipers and giant scorpions. Some crazy Redguard once upon a time mixed the venom from these two creatures, poured it into a glass with a shot of double rum, drank it...and survived. Many others have not been so lucky. While this dangerous drink has been decried by the law for years, you can't stop people from doing dumb things when they've really set their minds to it!

happy Martin Monday!
May reward for my supporters ♥
Ju'rohn sera Talviel,
Pardon our poor writing skills.
It is rare among our kind to even speak an understandable language for n'waah.
We are curious about your knowledge. Each thing to know is better learnt than left, is it...
We do come from the Ashlands, deep inside the desolated lands of Molag Amur. We do remember dances, clashes, traditions, war, but merely feast and drinks from those times. We left decades ago, and only music helps us remembering how life was back then. Music and body paint.
Have you ever met an Ashlander, from the Erabenimsun maybe, that did not want to cut your throat at sight and accepted to share with you the words and secrets of his tribe? Mephala taught us the benefits from discretion, we may be asking for something dangerous. If you never had, then proceed carefully. Withdraw at sign of bothering.
Part of us talks about smells, spices and hunt, and I would appreciate to give him a piece of the past through meals he may have already experienced as a child.
We know it may be complicated.
We will be thankful and draw your name in the ashes when dawn arises.
Yours,
- Sangre
Under sun and sky, warmest greetings, friend!
While many outlanders are cautious and are treated as hostile by Ashlanders, I have worked hard over many years to create bonds of trust, respect, and friendship with those who are willing. Namely, I am on cordial terms with the Urshilaku and Mabrigash tribes, and while I am (and likely always will be) but an outsider they treat with caution, I have made solid bonds of friendship with these two groups.
I cemented our bonds of trust with trade of both goods and news from across Morrowind and Tamriel, and in exchange, I have been offered a glimpse into their ways of life, culture, and food customs. In particular, I have offered what I can in the way of aid to these tribes, who after many years still feel the effects of the Red Year. I bring medicine, ingredients, fabrics, weapons and tools, and more in open solidarity, expecting nothing in return. However, I have gained worlds of wisdom, hospitality, and Nirn's best roast guar recipe in return- far more than I could ever have hoped for.
Regarding a meal befitting Mephala, served in accordance to traditional Ashlander customs, I would recommend a traditional ceremonial nix-ox stew, due to the glory that comes with bringing down such a tough foe, and the slow and deliberate process that comes with cooking this dish (not recommended for novice cooks). You will also have to gather cliff racer eggs, now found predominantly in the Blacklight region, a handful of ash hoppers, guar milk, blood, and fat, and forage plants like fire fern, saltrice, any mushrooms of your choice, and ash yams.
Firstly, boil the fire fern with a good amount of Bitter Coast peppers, salt, and dried scuttle powder (I also recommend adding any favourite herbs and spices, wrapped in sedge grass packets). When the stock is thick and red, add the nix-ox meat and chopped ash yams, and bring the flame down, leaving the pot to simmer for two hours.
Fry together the mushrooms and ash hoppers in guar fat until crispy. Set aside as topping for your stew.
Whisk together the guar milk, blood, and cliff racer eggs until frothy, and slowly pour into the soup while stirring continously. Again, leave to simmer for another hour, then add the saltrice, allowing the stew to thicken. Add guar milk as needed if it starts to dry out. Pour in a good measure of shein until the stew is a deep, dark red. Bring the stew to a boil once again for thirty minutes, before finally serving.
Serve the stew piping hot and top with crispy mushrooms and ash hoppers. Best eaten with wickwheat or saltrice flatbread.
I hope that this long-winded message has not bored you. While we may not be well-acquainted thus far, I hope that I may pass on my sincerest wishes for peace and friendship with your tribe, and that if ever you desire it in the future, my company and expertise is yours. ~Talviel
In the waning years of the Third Era of Tamriel, a prisoner born on a certain day to uncertain parents was sent under guard, without explanation, to Morrowind, ignorant of the role he was to play in that nation's history...

Pictured: The Official FAQ for Redguard describing Morrowind as the sequel to Daggerfall.
A lot of people were confused by them describing The Elder Scrolls VI as the "sequel to Skyrim" in today's press release, I believe they've done this for every game in the main series. Daggerfall was the sequel to Arena, Morrowind was the sequel to Daggerfall, and so on.
I can find examples for almost all of them, and I believe examples for all of them exist from official posts, but the Wayback Machine is down right now and I can't find every single one.
