Too many Manhattans and Chesterfields but she’s still got her looks. She adjusts the microphone to its proper height. Her skin tight glitter knit black formal kisses her still moist from his skin. Every pore is crying. Every pore grows a violet. It moves to the fall of tulle at the hem with a single sapphire broach accent and 4 strand crystal bead choker, long black tricot gloves, black open toed pumps complete the sophisticated nightclub singers ensemble. An angel enfolds her. She’ll take in the slots before catching the bus to Juarez. Life is moving inside her. A rosary sticks to her skin inside her strapless whalebone girdle. She wishes laudanum was still legal and hopes God will forgive her.
Laudanum was a popular opiate-based drug in the nineteenth century, used to calm colicky babies and ‘hysterical’ women.
