You don’t know how it started, but it somehow became a tradition.
If it’s raining, or storming, and you and Harvey are together for the night, you’re likely to find yourselves on the floor of the small cabin which overlooks your farm. To your left, a bowl of artichoke dip and a plate of tortilla chips. Maybe a bottle of wine, if you’ve just made some. You sit across from one another, focus trained on whichever game you’ve chosen at the moment.
If you have your way, it’s usually cards. If it’s his choice, it’s more likely to be a board game.
As traditions go, it’s an unusual one. It isn’t constant, although it almost sort of is. He’ll approach you or vice versa with a game of choice, smiling, gesturing to the spot on the woven rug where you typically set up. You are very competitive. He is not.
Fast-paced games, especially card games, are his kryptonite. It isn’t necessarily that he’s bad at the games, but rather you are too good. He blames it on the fact that you’re still so much younger and able to act so quickly. To react on emergency medical situations is a different story— but when he places a ten down and suddenly you’ve slapped down a nine, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, seven, six, five, four, three, two, three in that order, all he can do is sit back aghast as you single handedly wrap that round up.
Should you win, which you usually do with these games, you like to make it known. You stand, wave to an adoring, albeit nonexistent, crowd of fans, dip a chip in the artichoke dip, and loudly crunch it in his face.
“Haha! Four years of community college versus a lot of years of medical school and look where it got you.”
“Hmm,” he’ll say, mock-thoughtfully, smiling because he’s looking at you. “First the student loans, and now this! Quite a waste of my time, don’t you think?”
But when you play slower games, you don’t stand half a chance. He’s always 10 steps ahead of you, calculating, predicting, because that’s what his brain is wired to do. Just as he understands radio signals, just as he handles a patient— he can always tell exactly what’s going to happen and what to do about it. Even when you think you’ve got the upper hand, you look up to see that casual smirk edging out of his poker face and it’s over for you.
“Checkmate, my dear,” he says as a trademark, even when you aren’t playing chess. He smiles warmly and reaches over to pat your hand. “Nice try, though.”
