hiiii it’s crazy late rn but I’m dazed and kinda wanna analyse a little bit on the recent tadc episode.very specifically analysing on transfem jax
I’ve been hearing people interpreting the flashback and song sequence that plays “Isn’t She Lovely” as a “funnybunny song”, but in my opinion it’s really just.not
The choice for this song is really sweet, because despite the actual context for the original song (that being the birth of Stevie Wonder’s daughter), it’s kind of another song celebrating someone else’s “birth”, Jax’s
The shots that follow the scene are of course, the obvious pink lighting. Jax has been rejecting her identity her whole life, in the real world before she was scanned in, in the circus and even further to her abstraction. But despite her suppression, it haunts her the whole time, and it can be seen through the different shots that lead up to the shot above.
One blatant thing is her clothes and her general bright colour palette, wearing pink overalls is a little more telltale since despite her displays of her “masculinity” throughout the show, her colours are there to expose how fraudulent her behaviour is, that it’s just a defence/front.
On the other hand on screens in the episode, the scenes of Jax truly opening up about herself is when she’s in Ribbit’s room. The lighting of this room is overpowered by green, of course courtesy of Ribbit, showing how it’s their space. However, despite this, Jax stands out pretty harshly, by colour contrast of course, but of all the colours she’d contrast in, she’s pink. Not any shade closer to green, she is lit in pink. This is the most pink she is in the flashback sequence, because after that she reverts back to her regular palette, purple overpowering pink.
It’s a bit of a stretch, but to me the purple symbolises her inner conflict with her identity, feeling unable to accept herself, yet still seeping out, like she can’t handle the slightest hint or idea that others could know. Unfortunately, that does lead me to;
Ribbit and Jax’s fight. From the comfortable greens and pinks, the shot is cold, snappy and blue. This is Jax completely denying her identity, denying the fact that Ribbit was able to keep a secret as grand as hers, rejecting the trust she had in Ribbit and that Ribbit had in her. She never said anything, that night never happened. The cold blue engulfs the whole shot, zero letting up until
The fight resolves. Now it’s purple, back to the stagnant, back to trying to keep it under the cracks. Now that Jax has broken her friendship off with Ribbit, she can go back to into hiding, act like nothing happened. Even then, in the shot you can see hints of blue, the lingering fight from earlier. If you notice, the way the shot is angled, Jax is closer to the bluer tones, signalling her hiding back into her shell, pretending that she’s still a man, that the mere idea that she could be a woman is ridiculous and insane. But Ribbit is closer to the pinker tones in the shot; she was safety, the femininity that Jax had been allowed to explore, if only for that brief moment. Ribbit still kept her secret despite all that Jax had done to her after she deemed Ribbit untrustworthy.
There are other more noteworthy shots to talk about, such as;
The shot of Jax having just pushed over her mother. It’s sort of brief, but the thing I took note of was the colours again. The entire background is a suppressive dull blue, completely overpowering everything in the scene. It was Jax’s old home, after all. But Jax is once again, pink. In her entirety. To me, I think it’s meant to represent how Jax tried to open up to her mother, tried to come out to her, but as Jax had said, her mother laughed at her, demeaned her. This was her trying to be vulnerable, but under such a suppressive environment, her colours are dull too. she had no room to thrive and accept herself for what she was.
Though, of course I think that one was a little more on the nose.
Okay now this one is a little more for the funnybunny shippers (I'm included), though of course this can also be taken platonically. The shots of when Pomni is able to confront Jax is completely pink. She is at her most vulnerable, there are no defenses or lies to hide behind because Pomni has seen everything. She knows her secret now. She expects to be rejected for who she is, she pleads and cries about how Pomni isn't supposed to care or love her, no one is. But Pomni continues trudging on, towards her. After all, Pomni came all this way just to see her. She doesn't deny that she loves Jax, she doesn't deny that she cares.
Pomni is the same colour palette as Jax, not just because of the pink lamp illuminating the whole shot (at least to me,) but it also symbolises that she is willing and happy to accept Jax, to love her as she is, despite how much she's pushed her away.
Them hugging solidifies how Jax is finally trusting Pomni, fully trusting her. Although the entire scene for this has been pink, I'd like to think this part in particular is Jax accepting herself and accepting the love that Pomni is showing her. No walls, no fighting, just a badly needed hug. Honestly this scene was super sweet and it does make my heart well up.
NOW, we finally reach the song/flashback sequence. The entire song to me is Jax coming to terms with her identity as a woman, even if she can't truly display it anymore. With the fact of Pomni choosing to love and accept Jax, comforting her, maybe it was the push she needed to finally accept herself and not suppress herself. In this context, the song is about Jax choosing to embrace her womanhood. and the line saying "Less than one minute old" just shows how fresh and new this revelation is, how she's settling to her new identity.
She's "reborn", no longer a miserable man, but a loved woman.
