Personal tips for screen work with a migraine
As we move deep into September, most universities have finished freshers week (at least in the UK) and are starting to teach.
This is both really exciting, but can lead to some problems - especially for my fellow migraine spoonies.
Because, it is a truth that is universally acknowledged, that a migraine will hit at the worst time possible.
Every time.
I have never had one yet that would come on when it was convenient.
And while some things can be put on hold - other deadlines just can't. As a recent uni student, I know that very painful feeling.
So today I wanted to share a few personal tips I found that let me at least get a little work done when a migraine hit.
But a quick reminder before we get to the list - these are only from personal experience (and they certainly won't make the pain go away when a migraine hits). These tips don't treat migraines, and I'm not recommending working through one either. These tips are not a substitute for taking a proper break, medication, and resting.
Let's get started:
Change fonts to those that are easier on the eyes – such as comic sans or other dyslexia friendly fonts - I personally like to use Comic sans as I find it very easy to read – especially with a headache. But play around and find which fonts work best for you.
Change the background colour in Word to something other than white, or activate night mode (if your device has this available) - I personally have found that changing the background to a soft grey in Word really helps me when I am working. But again, try out different colours and find what works best for you.
Take regular screen breaks - These do not have to be long. It is commonly recommended that every 20 mins you should look at something that is 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. Alternative breakdowns could be working for 30 mins, and then looking away from the screens for 5 mins. When I am experiencing a migraine attack, the screen time is dramatically reduced, and the rest time increases.
What tips do you have that allow you to finish time-sensitive work when experiencing a migraine? Let me know in the comments below!
Sending spoonie hugs!

Here's some of my tips if you're struggling with hygiene and can't shower as often as you want/need to, for whatever reasons:
Putting cleaning wipes, deodorant and lotion in reach of your bed
putting baby wipes in reach of the toilet
Breaking up tasks and doing them with breaks in between and as much in bed/sitting down as you can. For example i can brush my teeth more often if i wash my face not in the sink but in bed
Baby wipes, makeup wipes, disposable wash cloths, disposable toothbrushes, etc. exist to help. Use them if you can and don't be afraid to create trash
If anyone else has something to add to this please do!
When you take a shower, if you don’t have a shower chair, lean on things.
Make sure to lay, lean, and sit as much as possible. It’s ok to take time, it’s ok to take breaks.
BREAKS. BREAKS. BREAKS.
You can put a towel on the floor of your shower and sit on it while showering if you can't use a shower chair for any reason. You can put one in your back and lean against the shower wall. It's not as hygienic as a shower chair but it is much more so than not showering
tip: taking medication whilst laying on your right side can make pills dissolve 2.3 times faster than other postures, and therefore potentially work quicker.

My incredibly bleak philosophy of compassion is that we should all pity each other horribly and practice an according amount of kindness.
I asked for a pastry at the coffee shop. When I raised my card up to pay, he simply said "you're good." and waved it away. I wondered why. I wondered what made him think I deserved to have my order be free. Sparing me those two dollars.
Sitting down at the table, I remembered the scars on my arm. The universal signifier of "This Kid Needs Help." Maybe his kindness was only out of pity. He saw those and assumed there was some great misery and wanted to offer me some relief. It's generally good to be kind to people who are hurting. But I wasn't hurting that bad.
The thing is, there is some great misery. People generally aren't doing that great. There is a great misery within me and within him and within everyone, and some people notice the pain, some people express it, others don't. But we all suffer from something.
It doesn't matter if someone seems to deserve some relief. Everyone needs it. Everyone is suffering constantly. Some more than others, but still. This Kid Needs Help applies to everyone.
Thirty minutes later, I went to get a second pastry, intending to pay and leave a tip this time. It was the same cashier. As he reached to grab it for me, I saw scars on his arm.
But it doesn't really matter. He'd deserve a tip anyway. Because it's never just us hurting.

we all know adult humans dont get enough enrichment but the other day i was walkin home past an empty playground and impulsively ran over to spin myself on this zipline merry-go-round contraption for a few minutes and it really did feel like it unlocked some neglected part of my brain. like damn we really should all go outside and play more. fuck. they werent kidding with this play time thing. have you guys heard about play time. it could be huge.
neovaginas can get wet naturally
a neophallus can get erect with an implant (this will either be a bendable rod or a device that inflates with saline at the press of a button, usually in the testicles)
both can feel sexual pleasure and experience orgasm
most neovaginas will be able to tolerate larger insertions with enough dilating/training
the nerves in neophalluses take a while to regrow but it is incredibly rare to experience no sexual nerve growth
both can look and feel "normal" if that's what you want, just take good care of your scars and look at your surgeons' results portfolio (and don't be afraid to be picky! its your genitals, you get to decide!)
in fact it's possible for many people to stealth and for their sexual partners to never know. even for phallo, some people with natal penises have erectile implants too, ED is common. neocaginas are often indistinguishable from natal vaginas
many surgeons are starting to offer preservation options for patients who want a more mixed look/don't want to lose what they have
YOU HAVE OPTIONS! demystify bottom surgery
Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
This reminds me of the blood river in Antarctica. For like a century scientists had no clue why this river looked like, acted like, and felt exactly like blood. Turns out it’s just really high in iron.
"Blood River in Antartica" yeah right there's no way a river looks like bl-
...nevermind
Blood Falls isn't just high in iron, it's the byproducts of extremophile bacteria that have been isolated under a glacier in a iron- and sulfur-rich anoxic brine for the past 5 million years.

late 90s 01/02 on our backs magazine covers from bishopsgate institute archives. | originally posted by on your.knees on instagram.
I just wanna put this out there: If you want to include the archive or this blog among resources on covid handouts, please do it. I'm making mini-zines to hand out at pride later this month, and I started writing in the url for the archive when I saw that several sources on most of these resources have either gone defunct or lean towards more you-do-you information these days. I'm gonna keep building the archive until I'm physically incapable, so it will keep being updated.
I guess I also wanna state this for any old time. Please direct anyone and everyone to my little cruddy archive. A lot of people do a lot of sharing, but it's not always in a place it can be easily accessed again (like when a newsletter gets swallowed up by 400 promotional updates in your inbox). As we keep growing, I hope to work to make the archive as organized and easily searchable as possible. We have more than 13,000 open access resources, articles, and scientific papers, and more get added every day.
(It's more than 20,000 resources now 😉)
middle and ring lesbian archive is a great resource btw. highly recommend perusing issues of erotic mag on our backs and leatherdyke zine brat attack :)
i would rather see the information for an event handwritten in sharpie on a paper towel than see another AI generated flyer
