1. we are mostly an herd (system) of unicorns and unicorn-adjacent alters, and almost everyone here is an animal/non-human in some way, except for Jotaro Kujo, so we most likely will interact with alterhumans and otherkins along with systems!

Hello!! I hope this doesnt come off as rude, I'm still learning more about alterhumanity and otherkin and anything alike.. I noticed one of your posts that said Alterhumanity only includes certain groups, and all this time Id been using it to describe ANYONE who identifies as nonhuman on any level. Should I use nonhuman instead, as a more inclusive term?

I apologize if thereâs been some confusion around my posts. The thing is: alterhuman is an inclusive term. It was coined to be that way. I often compare it to the term queer when explaining its purpose; in its current usage, queer is an umbrella term thatâs inclusive of all who are LGBTQIA+ in some way. Similarly, alterhuman is an umbrella term encompassing many experiences that are considered ânon-normativeâ to *(ortho)human society and its concept of identity.
(*Orthohuman is the antonym for alterhuman. Envision your average person on the street who has no connection to this subculture. Thatâs an orthohuman. This is distinguished from humans since there are human alterhumans, but I digress.)
The issue isnât a lack of inclusivity. Alterhuman was coined for everyone. The issue is that thereâs many folks who assume alterhuman is synonymous with nonhuman, which it isnât. This leads to the erasure of other alterhumans and their experiences, largely because nonhumanity is centered a lot.
Make no mistake: nonhumanity is still an experience thatâs included under this concept. Itâs not wrong for someone to talk about their nonhumanity as a part of their alterhumanity, but my posts are in relation to an ongoing issue of folks mistakingly treating this label as another way of saying nonhuman. Being nonhuman isnât the only way to be alterhuman. Moreover, folks need to stop and reconsider their assumptions that either a.) all alterhumans are animals or nonhuman in general or b.) animality and/or nonhumanity are the core part(s) of everyoneâs alterhumanity. A lot of language in the communityâ such as using beasts/critters/creatures/etc in referral to the alterhuman community collectively or presenting surveys as something for all alterhumans but only asking questions in context to nonhumanityâ exhibits these assumptions, which is an issue for alterhumans like myself and many folks I know in this community.
Thereâs plenty of ways to be alterhuman. Some ways pertain to who or what you are as an individual, and some ways pertain to atypical relationships you have with various things (animals, fiction, mythology, objects, concepts, etc). Thatâs just the surface of what alterhumanity can be, whereas nonhumanity is a very specific experience that focuses on oneâs species.
I recommend using nonhuman / nonhumanity / nonhuman community when youâre specifically talking about nonhumanity. You can still reference alterhumanity since nonhumanity is a form of alterhumanity. Just know that nonhumanity and alterhumanity arenât interchangeable. In other words: nonhuman is the word youâre looking for when you describe the experience of anyone who fully or partially identifies as nonhuman on any level.
Alterhuman is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple experiences. The groups I list in my post(s) are specified not because the term alterhuman is exclusive to them, but because they are often overlooked in contrast to nonhuman experiences (otherkin, therian, holotheres, etc). Erasure of these experiences happens a lot, which is why I specified them when discussing the meaning of alterhumanity. Donât feel discouraged, though: youâre not the first to ask this! Folks confuse the two as synonyms quite often, and thereâs been clarifications before my own on the subject.
Like I said before, think of how queer is used as a term. When people talk about queerness, it applies to many experiences. Oneâs romantic and sexual orientation or lack thereof, oneâs preference in presentation or personal referrals, oneâs gender or sex, tertiary attraction, polyamory, relationship anarchy, etc. Nowadays, queerness can refer to anything because itâs a term meant to include and represent a diverse array of experiences. Although itâs usually not intentional, referring to the concept with only one experience in mindâ like only focusing on the experiences of gay men for exampleâ contradicts its purpose.
The same applies to alterhumanity. Alterhumanity is meant to include all sorts of experiences that are treated as atypical or alternative to the human experience, including experiences that arenât human at all. That said, it isnât exclusively about nonhumanity, just as queerness isnât exclusively about gay men (like in the example I gave).
Iâm not asking for nonhumans to stop using the term, nor am I saying that only a few groups can call themselves alterhuman. Rather, Iâm asking that folks step back and think of their peers when they refer our community and term so loosely. Iâve seen a few folks here and there justify their usage as âWell, for me, itâs about nonhumanity!â which is fine if theyâre explicitly talking about their own experiences. But when they use it that way for the community as a whole, itâs dismissing many of their peers who constantly have to remind everyone that we too exist and have as much of a right to be unapologetically ourselves as every nonhuman does.
The SĂĄmi (also Sami or Saami) are the indigenous people of the SĂĄmpi region, now modern-day Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.
The SĂĄmi people are most known as semi-nomadic reindeer herders, with around 2,800 SĂĄmi people working as full-time herders in Norway. Reindeer herding is legally reserved only for SĂĄmi people in some parts of Nordic countries.
The SĂĄmi people speak the SĂĄmi languages, which belong to the Uralic language group. There are ten or more SĂĄmi languages, with spellings of the grouping varying as SĂĄmi, Sami, Saami, Saame, SĂĄmic, Samic and Saamic. The most widely spoken of these languages is Northern SĂĄmi with 26,000 speakers. Others include Akkala (dead), Inari (400), Kemi (dead), Kainuu (dead), Skolt (320), Penninsular (600), Ter (2), Lule (1,000 to 2,000), Pite (20), Southern (600), Ume (20) and GĂ€lve (dead).
Plenty of SĂĄmi names are Finnish or Scandinavian names adapted into the SĂĄmi language. Some aren't SĂĄmi at all! A lot of this has to do with forced conversions in Norway, where families were not allowed to baptize children with a SĂĄmi name. And baptism was required because conversion to Christianity was required.
In SĂĄmi tradition, someone's name could include generations of family names. It wasn't strictly patronymic, and people would usually use whichever parent was most know to people.
Here's an example: Say someone introduces themself as Äuvje Aagni Heike. Äuvje is her grandmother, Aagni is her mother, and she is Heike.
Another way to identify yourself in SĂĄmi culture would be with a descriptor. This isn't a SĂĄmi specific thing. It's used in plenty of cultures and stories -- think Ser Duncan the Tall in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He's Duncan, and he's tall.
If someone has a common name, such as LĂĄsse, they may use a descriptor to be more specific. Say LĂĄsse is a writer. He could identify himself as ÄĂĄlli-LĂĄsse (literally writer-LĂĄsse). Place names can also be used as a descriptor. Inari-Laara could be used to describe Laara who lives in Inari, Finland.
Additionally, and something that used most often in the modern era, someone could use a first name and a surname, such as Duiri Ravna.
Once again to clarify: I am not SĂĄmi. There may be cultural nuances that I miss, or information I get wrong. Do not use me as a source. This is just to give people character name ideas!
I highly recommend you refer to SĂĄmi sources for better, more in-depth information. This is simply for names. Don't take anything I say as gospel. I'll link some resources below for those curious. Additionally, if you know any resources that you think I should add, let me know.
