Frozen II’s creative team traveled to Norway, Finland and Iceland for design ideas, and studied everything from haute couture runway shows and 1940s fashion to traditional Norwegian satchels and photos of “anything that feels crystalline,” Brittney Lee, visual development artist, added. “We try to be as thorough with detail as possible, down to the direction of the embroidery thread.”

“Elsa always has been floor-length everything, so with her iconic capes and long trains, her shape line is a very large, elegant triangle,” Lee said. “When we lose that length, it starts to not feel like her anymore.”

Tiny little meta/vent post, because I’m getting a little frustrated seeing all the fanwork that seems to ignore this.

I’m seeing so much stuff that treats the gems like they’re suddenly going to be perfectly supportive and know exactly how to deal with Steven after I Am My Monster, or after Future, and I’m just completely baffled as to why people think that the gems are suddenly going to be good at this.

The gems? The people who saw Steven turn into a big monster boy and sobbed on the beach about their own problems? The people who spent the entirety of SUF standing back while Steven had a total mental breakdown, gave him horrible advice, blamed him for not “controlling” himself? That doesn’t go away with just a hug.

And we know it doesn’t, because the whole point of the final episode is that they’re still pretty shitty at this! The episode opens with Steven struggling with how to tell the gems that he’s leaving, trying to figure out ways to soften the blow as much as possible. Steven is still struggling with putting their feelings over his own.

What do the gems do with this revelation? They apparently all think to themselves, “Ah, our son who struggles with feeling needed and not being cared for is hitting an emotional rough patch. What should we do? Oh, I know, emotionally close ourselves off and pretend everything’s fine!”

They’re still messing up! They’ll be messing up for a long time. Steven has to press them for that comfort and attention he desperately needs, and we see how they’ve grown as people because they finally give it when pressed, which is a wonderful way to show how they’ve gotten better.

But better isn’t perfect. They’re still not great at this. There’s a reason why he’s meeting Connie and Lars regularly as he tours the country and specifically not scheduling regular meetings with the gems, despite copious amounts of warps.
