Was convinced by my work friends to read one of the romantasy books they're into and lads it is unfortunately Pretty Good

The romance is whatever, there's parts that could be improved and parts that are all around fine but I'm very into the mystery and the lore and the main character

#I haven't read romantasy in years because furyborn was just So Goddamn Bad it made me reflect on the entire genre LMAO #but shield of sparrows is a solid 8.5/10 #there was this fun bit where I called my shot on one of the twists way early but the author does a really good job #delaying the reveal and adding other cheeky complications until you're like oh dang I was wrong what am I missing #and then tada! you were right! but then she uses the distraction to absolutely pull the wool over your eyes elsewhere #not sure how intentional it is but it is very good

I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.

#I was reading the first book of a sequel series to my then-favorite epic fantasy series #now in the first trilogy there were family trees in the back bc this was much more a series about political intrigue than battles/war #so here I am. book one of series two. can't remember a character's family ties.#I flip to the last page.#there's no family tree. only the last paragraph of the book #my favorite character dying in an inferno that consumes the home he and his wife built together over the previous series #his wife watching in shell shocked grief as it all goes up in flames. and their son trying to pull her away #but she doesn't want to go how can she go how can she let him die alone when they promised each other they'd never be alone again?#anyway I was fifteen I cried for three hours and then couldn't pick up the book again without crying for six months

i like "social ergonomics" bc like yeah. furniture is usually made in a way that's like "we think this is probably what is needed for a human to immediately perform any given task" and often we are wrong about what types of furniture or spaces will have a detrimental long term impact on our bodies. ergonomics ideally looks at the evidence of the impact on bodies and then works backwards from there to come up with design.

social ergonomics should mean looking at social structures and analyzing the outcomes they have re: human welfare, and then taking that information back to the design board and redesigning things to hurt people less.

this should also be a zine. someday. but that would require me being able to sit upright

My partner is a game designer. He crafts experiences intended to elicit specific behaviors from thousands of strangers as his full time job. He often looks at social structures from this perspective in his free time and we talk about it a lot. and hoo boy are a lot of our systems not doing what they are officially meant to do.

I realize it’s weird to show up on someone’s post to say “you like game design.
