upon finding out you had gotten into a fight from that singular text that appeared in your chat, rin immediately dropped everything and aimlessly wandered around until he finally found your location. you were sitting on a bench, not crying, but not exactly happy either. his normally stone heart cracked ever so slightly, at the sight of seeing you so.. dejected. so neutral, with a few of bruises on your face and across your knuckles that you didn’t seem to really care about.
rin walked over and stood in front of you, momentarily at a loss for words due to the unfamiliarity of the situation. people were supposed to not like him, not you— the light in his life, his salvation when things went awry. he crouched down in front of you and took out a handkerchief, before gently patting whatever blood was on your body with it tenderly. he knew getting angry over someone’s ass you already kicked was pointless, but he couldn’t help feel a pit of rage bubbling in his stomach.
“.. it’s okay.” rin mumbled as he sits beside you, taking your hand in his. “do.. do you wanna sit here or go to the nurse?”
when you chose the former, rin nodded, and let you lean against him. his arm went around your waist as he inhaled the fragrance of your hair. that text, “i got into a fight” scared the hell out of him. his grip on you tightened by a fraction, because the thought of you helpless made him feel so.. lukewarm. he was meant to have your back, protect you and be there for you, not have a repeat of sae where he left him alone.. but that wasn’t important. it wasn’t about him.
lingering on past things was meaningless, because the main concern was on you. he briefly raised his head to see if anyone was around, before gently kissing your cheek, and looking away with reddening ears. the adorable, familiar ones that managed to cheer you up after any occasion of distress.
“.. call me immediately if it happens again. i would’ve kicked their ass for you.”
“WHAT.” barou’s voice raised instantly upon being told by your friends that you was injured, and was currently sitting on a bench outside. without another word spoken, his large frame beelined through the halls, a permanent scowl on his face to deflect from the worry he felt surrounding you. what if you were badly injured? or worse, needed to go to the hospital, all because he wasn’t there to protect you? his teeth clenched, a vein popping on his forehead the longer he thought about you getting seriously hurt by peasants.
but all thoughts about potentially beating other students up ceased when he saw you, sitting there by yourself, your chest rising with each slow breath you take. barou immediately walks over to you and takes your hand, before pulling you back inside the building. no words were exchanged throughout the whole walk to the nurses office. he opened it, yet finds no-one inside the room.. how annoying. he closes the door behind him as you take a seat on the bed, your gaze downwards. the sight of your normally bright self affected him more than he had realised. it was as if he was dependent on your smile, your happiness, and the love you emitted, since it was a clear contrast to his usual brashness. a good contrast, that he deeply treasured, to other people’s dismay.
his head shakes the thoughts out of his head and focuses on the task at hand— help you. barou looks around for supplies and eventually begins to clean your wounds with a tenderness that was only present with the people he cared about. his sisters, and you. his hands were larger compared to yours, something you noticed but never verbalised. you pressed your palm against his before letting out a quiet huff of laughter and weakly smiling.
your abrupt interruption caught him off guard, the groove of applying rubbing alcohol then a plaster onto cuts broken. he bites his lip and lets out a “tch”, before going back to cleaning the wounds, your expression falling once more.
“.. well of course they’re big.” barou grumbles. a few seconds of silence passes through when suddenly, as an act of impulse, his lips press against yours. without time to process, he pulls away and cups your cheek, looking at you with his intense, ruby eyes, now soft with love.
“forget about the peasants. i’m here now, idiot.”
you were practically nowhere to be found, which worried karasu, much to his denial. he wandered around aimlessly, sharp eyes darting to each room around the school with a stoic face, his expression giving off nothing but aloofness as he tried to find you. typically you were sitting in your classroom with your friends, but you weren’t even there. an exhale leaves him as he brings out his phone and finally calls you.
one ring. then another. then another, until you finally answered your phone.
“hello..?” karasu could hear the exhaustion in your voice straightaway, a stark difference to your normal personality.
“where are you? what happened?”
“.. i’m beneath one of the trees.”
he didn’t need to be told anything else, his long legs taking him outside and looking beneath every tree in the school, until he eventually found you quietly sitting there, your knees brought up to your chin as she stared into the nothingness of the atmosphere. karasu plops down beside you with a sigh, leaning back on his hands as you two sat there in silence. what was he meant to say? he had no clue, so he opted for bringing you closer and make your head rest on his shoulder, his hand trailing up and down your arm to try and soothe you.
“dumbass..” karasu whispers, his eyes finally darting to your bruised cheeks and arms. they narrowed in response, his voice becoming sharper, but not towards you. never towards you, but towards whoever laid hands on you. the thought made him tense, but he soon relaxed upon looking at your glossy eyes. he cups your cheeks, thumbs brushing over small tears that rolled down your skin without permission. karasu’s forehead presses against yours. “you coulda told me somethin’ happened.” his lips press against your eyes. “woulda kicked their ass for ya..”
“i know you would’ve..” you rub your eyes to get rid of the tears, before letting out a soft huff. “sorry.”
karasu’s expression became affectionate almost immediately upon hearing that small apology. his arms encase you, hands holding onto your waist like a vice as he presses his cheek against yours.
“don’t apologise like ’s yer fault. they’re just mediocre, yeah?”
his lips were pulled into a frown as he walked around attempting to find you, the maths book in his arms forgotten whilst he peeks into different classrooms. zantetsu leans against the wall and shuts his eyes tightly, trying to think intently about where your whereabouts could potentially be. he always knew where you were, he had memorised the places you normally went since he, most of the time, needed your help when it came to class work. other times.. he just wanted to see you. you comforted him when he was berated for being less intelligent than others, and you focused on his other good qualities. it was something he adored about you. his fingers pushed his glasses up out of habit, and out of concern.
zantetsu hummed to himself, before overhearing a conversation between two girls.
“why would y/n even wanna fight in the first place, she’s probably gonna be suspended..!” one girl huffed.
“i’d fight too if they said that about the person i’m with.” the other girl replied passively.
.. a partner? since when did you even have one? whatever, that wasn’t the main focus. the main focus was you, wherever you were. he sprints around the school, looking in every crevice of the building for you as anxiety eats away at him with every step that he took. the words of those two girls lingered in his head. partner? and what’d they say about them? it was weird, because you’d normally tell him anything and everything about your life. why’d you keep this a secret?
after looking everywhere, zantetsu decides to take a break, and walk up to the roof to eat his lunch- the usual pep in his step now glum by not seeing you. he walks out, the cold air brushing against his cheeks and sending a chill down his spine while he continues to walk towards the very opposite end of the rooftop, a place where you both sat every now and again. he was expecting to be alone for his peace of mind, but his eyes landed on you. listening to music alone, no lunch in front of you. it squeezed his soul.
without a word, he sits opposite you, both your legs touching. no words were exchanged, but he kept feeding you some of his food, and giving you a drink of his small carton of milk. the act continues, until he suddenly speaks.
“.. why’d you.. y’know, fight?” zantetsu’s voice was gentle, but his thoughts became a mess once more. “and who are you dating..?
your eyes narrowed in confusion for a moment, eventually widening in recognition. “oh, that.. some.. a guy called you a stupid bastard. i wasn’t about to let him insult you like that.”
“as for the other thing.. people think we’re dating— w-which, is fine! you can clear it up if you want to—“ your words were cut short when zantetsu leaned in and kissed your lips. it was clumsy, awkward, but you could feel the adoration coming from him as you both settled into it. when you part, he leans his forehead against yours, his breath hitching.
“you’re too good to me. i’d do anything for you, y’know..”
